Avon Indiana

If you have driven down CR200N (21st Street), I'm sure you have seen this sign. Standing in the middle of 20 acres, in the place where the Indy YMCA has plans to build a local Avon YMCA facility.

In an IndyStar article written on April 11th, Mary Beth Carmichael, the community executive director at the YMCA's West District said, "the effort to raise the funds for the building has been a little slow". The funds needed to begin construction is $14million - $19 million.

Is Avon ready for the YMCA? Are we ready for the change about to take place in our town? Can we stop it? Do we want to? It depends on who you talk to. There are as many opposed to the growth as there are those in favor of it.

With the extension of Ronald Reagan Blvd., the north part of Avon is poised for growth. Around the area of the proposed YMCA, Pittman Partners have plans to build 84 "empty-nester" condominiums, while The Estridge Companies is planning a 400-home development. Right now, everyone seems to be waiting for a better market. Who will start first? It's really anyone's guess. One thing is for sure, once started, the growth will continue.

The YMCA planned for Avon will be comparable to the YMCA in Fishers. It will include both indoor and outdoor pools, a gymnasium and wellness center. Regarding the YMCA, I am all for it. The "Y" is where my children learned to swim, they participated in sports and dance classes. Our children need a place for year-round sports. Come to think of it, so do I.

Sometimes the short term inconvenience is worth the long term payoff. We will probably need wider roads and inevitably will see some gridlock in areas as the building starts and progresses. Whether you like the growth, don't like it or don't have an opinion, we will grow and growth is good!

So......Build it and they will come! Let's see who starts the building first.

I welcome your opinions and comments.
