Sometimes Hand Me Downs are a Good Thing

Kid ClothingYou can learn a lot listening to buyers particularly ones with children. You hear about hand me downs. Usually related to clothing going from the older child to the younger one. Sometimes it goes with toys or bicycles.

But if you listen carefully enough you will find that

Sometimes Hand Me Downs Are A Good Thing.

You see it with family traditions like eating together, gathering together for Christmas dinners, family vacations. The family rituals often are passed generation to generation. You see it in special gifts that one receives like necklaces or rings that are handed on to a new one getting married that Mom "thought you might like to have this."

Journals from Grandfather or Dad are kept, scrapbooks are stored carefully away in a box in the closet or an attic.

What legacy are you leaving for the ones around you? Are you preserving them to be handed along? A hand me down is certainly more than the size smaller winter coat for the next little one coming along. They are your little legacies to share with the special people in your life.

Gary, I always hope I will leave a good legacy behind, personally and professionally.  My father always said the best thing he could leave me was his good last name---and I always kept it!

Gary, As usual, you do not disappoint. I love hand me downs. As I packed up my Christmas decorations I smiled as I passed my Nana's christmas baking apron. The ornaments that were on the tree when my Dad was a small boy. The rocking chair that was my Grandma's. I am taking good care of them and will "hand them down" to my daughter one day. ~A:)

Hand me downs are more precious than new. Photo's and recipes seem to be the most precious to my daughter right now. But she will be surprised to see the other items I have saved when she gets her own home and she is older and more appreciative of these kinds of keepsakes.

Gary - I will be leaving my children a legacy of love and acceptance for who they are.

Have you considered writing a book with a collection of these posts?  You could cut and paste your own blogs without doing anything to them.

They are timeless and priceless, but you could sell it for $29.95.

Gary, the greatest things we can pass our children are not 'things' at all... Respect... faith... integrity... honor... love...  The trinkets and heirlooms are great, but if we do it right the intangibles will be our greatest legacy.  Another brilliant post my friend!

Gary, A really great timely post! We just took down ourtree & all the decorations. I was smiling as I removed our Christmas ornaments from the tree. We have a green pickle ornament that every year we hide on the tree after all gifts are open. Our 5 grandchildren have to leave the room while it's hidden on the tree. When they come back they have to look for it. The one to find it (eyes only - point) gets an extra gift. They get so excited to see who is going to find it and remember who has found it over the years! When they were over before Christmas making gingerbread houses one of them said"Nana" I live the pickle ornament! I hope when they are married and have families they will continue this tradition. It's a good hand me down!

Gary - hopefully we can pass down respect, a work ethic, self reliance, love, charity, etc. And perhaps a few trinkets that we can be remembered by.

My husband and I consciously converse about what we are attempting to leave for others when we are gone.  It's not just "things" but understanding about some things and especially love should be handed down.   Great post.

This is so true.  As a younger sister I got hand me downs all the time and hated it mainly, sometimes liked it.  I did like that my older sister paved the way for us with mom and dad though.  KM

Gary, some of my most treasured items are the many handmade needlepoint and tatting pieces that my grandmothers made.  I have them everywhere, and I learned to love to do that work also, and have many of my own pieces to hand down.  I hope my kids and grandkids will want them!

Gary:  I like the spirit of this post.  Looking at traditions and what we are passing on to our friends, family and future generations.  It makes me wonder, what will I be handing down.  I'll have to think about this.

Great post as usual Gary! Being the #5 sister in a family of 6, I know all about hand me downs! I have started my 2 daughters on learning family recipes. My mom is a GREAT cook, while I am "not so much". I swear she leaves out ingredients so I am not as good as she!

Soemtime ago, my step mother gave me a copy of a letter written by my Great Grandfather to his son, my grandpa Abe, just before he embarked on a trip to work abroad in the Philipines,  A typewriiten letter, it went on for several pages offering moral advice, as well as business advice.  Truly words from another era.

A copy of this letter is in my safe deposit box, to be handed down to my sones when I think they are really ready to appreciate it

Gary,

I am catching up with your posts.  As I see it:

Your blog is a journal - except it is kept here online through ActiveRain.  Remember to store your wisely worded posts carefully to hand down as part of your legacy.
