Real Estate Has Been Commoditized…Whatchya Gonna Do About It?

Many of the people in my network are Realtors, as am I. So this blog is naturally going to be at least 50% real estate-related. That said, I think what’s happening in real estate to be a good benchmark and applicable to many other industries. We’re going through a time of grandiose, wide-sweeping change. It’s a good thing, but it’s not good like a gentle sea breeze where you can just sit back and breathe it in. It’s good like a forest fire. Healthy in the long view, but right now it’s time to be on the move. If you sit in one place, you’re not going to last long.

Real estate is Changing

There’s hardly a Realtor out there who’d disagree that real estate is changing. I’ll submit we’re one step further down the pike of change than many of us realize. I honestly believe real estate is 100% commoditized. I’ve heard this hinted at over the past couple years, but no one seems to be acknowledging it…OR making any appropriate changes to their business to reflect this. Combine this with a significant industry downturn, and you’re looking disaster square in the face. What do I mean by “real estate is commoditized”? Pretty simple really: the general public sees little to no difference between Realtors OR any alternative methods available to them. In other words, when a consumer wants to sell their home, they see all Realtors as essentially equal...
