Our community here on ActiveRain is most fortunate. The founders have created a platform that provides a relatively safe and encouraging environment for fellow real estate professionals to interact with one another. We can come here to get our blogging feet wet, as it were, and have literally hundreds of helpful members cheering us on! Each time that we log on to ActiveRain, the flood gates of FREE relevant expert advice and knowledge are opened up, allowing us to fill our minds with helpful information.

Since becoming immersed in the social networking fray over the past several years, I've enjoyed a wide range of experiences on numerous platforms, spanning a variety of disciplines and interests. It's been interesting to observe how people interact on these varying networks, and how the respective site administrators deal with issues of impropriety or questionable behavior.

Many of the larger social networks simply do not have the time or the resources to deal with such things effectively, resulting in a uncontrolled 'free-for-all.' This is especially true on some of the political and gaming forums. Unless you have some pretty thick skin and aren't adverse to colorful language, it's best not to frequent such sites.

The ActiveRain Real Estate Network has three foundational documents that serve to help define our vision, purpose, philosophies, and expectations.

They are as follows:

ActiveRain’s Weltanschauung:  The Guiding Principles and Philosophies of our Organization. The ActiveRain World View.

ActiveRain Community Guidelines:  A short concise List of the ActiveRain Do's and Don'ts so we're all on the same page about what constitutes inappropriate behavior.

ActiveRain's Terms of Service:  Some additional information aimed at making your experience on ActiveRain more enjoyable.

All three of these documents were created so people could better understand our mission, and assure them of a more valuable and beneficial experience on the network.

One of the main overarching tenets that is communicated throughout these documents is the importance of treating one another with respect and civility. We invite and encourage spirited debate and discourse. We desperately need opinions and views that are contrary to our own, to challenge,  stimulate, and reinforce our thinking. However, we must do so without resorting to behavior that degrades, slanders, or attacks other members. Whenever we encounter differing views, we can elect to 'respectfully' disagree without compromising our professional integrity.

By treating one another with respect and civility, we offer the Consumer World a more favorable impression of our industry, and further contribute to the overall success of our community.

applauseRich - You know I agree with the spirit behind your guidelines and enforcement efforts.  I have, from time to time, had problems with what I perceived to be the arbitrary nature of enforcement - but I understand the problems there too.

Active Rain provides a terrific opportunity for members to learn from experts and to contribute to the community.  I have enjoyed my experience here and I try to add to the enjoyment of others (even in the controversial back rooms).

You can expect that I may still disagree with decisions, but I will always try to be constructive in my comments.  You and your team have my respect and best wishes.  You do a tough job - and manage to have fun with it most of the time.  Bravo !

Happy New Year (new photo is more formal than I am used to from you - but you clean up pretty good)

Hi Rich

I've been blogging on AR for about a month now. I don't typically blog on other sites and I am using AR to help build juice for my site. I was curious by what you said about other sites using bad language etc... Are you refering to other real estate sites? Or , some other type of blog? Just Curious again, I am new to the blogsphere.

Thanks

JIM

Rich, it really is neat to be a part of something special here at AR.  I really think our membership does a fantastic job of treating everyone with respect.  Kudos to you and all the folks at AR!

Rich, Happy New Year, I guess  the trend is too become more serious and formal. I started wearing shirt and tie in December in real life not on the virtual world yet, great picture of you......:)))

My constructive 2cents, part of  inprocessing when some one is registering on AR as a new member it should be required reading before they can post information about themselves on the site:) I will read it now...

Good reminders Rich.

I'm also avoiding blogs with whining and negative themes.  This community is full of wisdom, inspiration and fun.  And those are the themes that can help us grow our businesses, and our relationships and that can help us grow as individuals.

Health and prosperity in 2009!

It may help not to even comment on some posts that are put out to create controversial comments that will go against AR policies.  This should be a platform to help others and not create controversies.

Hi Rich, To some extent I think you are preaching to the choir, because I almost never have read any posts or comments here that I would consider in bad taste.  Oh there were some heated political exchanges during the election season, but other than those, I feel very safe here and enjoy interacting with my fellow AR members.  I know what you mean about some other sites, however.  When I first started hearing that I should sign up with some of the networking sites, I was appalled and embarassed at what I found, and discarded that idea pretty quickly.  Not so with Active Rain!

First of all the community guidelines should state that

1) only market reports can be posted on AR

2) Only formal, glamor shot photos are allowed for profile pictures

3) If you find a lost shoe, call Susan Mangigian.

Other than those obvious errors in the guidelines, looks good to me. :)

I agree nice picture, but I do have to admit it is a little weird seeing you dressed up.

I'm glad you're posting a reminder. I think some may not know those exist and with it up on the dashboard it just may get read ...:)

Rich... it's always good to mention these blogs again and the guidelines to AR.  Sure, a good debate is good, even one that is semi heated, but when calling people out and by name.. and then making rude comments, especially those that don't even pertain to the post, then it has gotten out of hand.

PS.. on another note.. I haven't been on much lately, but I see that you changed your picture. I almost didn't recognize you on my blog roll.

Were you on one of those crazy sites I mentioned in my most recent blog? I swear it feels like you wrote this post to give me comfort...lol :)

I am adding this link to my new post.

Thank you so very much for reminding everyone about this!

I hope linking to the post I'm referring to doesn't break any TOS rules. My latest bad experience has gotten me all shook each time I post anything these days.

Rich,

Your last comment, "By treating one another with respect and civility, we offer the Consumer World a more favorable impression of our industry, and further contribute to the overall success of our community.", brings to light some much needed manners in this realm.  We do not need to be disagreeable in our disagreeing.

Thank you sir for the reminder.

Sparky, kudos!  Now, for Active Rain to take those same guidelines and apply them to other social sites...it really has a very bad reflection on the industry to see negative behavior from the "so-called" professionals.

Anyone who protests so and indulges in such behavior only brings us all down and makes them look so foolish. No one knows all the answers and no one is right 100% of the time. We can all learn from each other and agree to disagree with grace.

Active Rain demonstrates by their actions and I for one am very grateful. Thank you for all the work you do to help maintain and keep the membership in check!

Happy New Year!

Hi Rich - it always pays to periodically post those links for those who've missed them.  Unfortunately, like someone else mentioned, I suspect it's the choir here reading your post.  It would be so nice to come in here and know that you weren't going to come upon jerky tactless behavior.

< we must do so without resorting to behavior that degrades, slanders, or attacks other members. Whenever we encounter differing views, we can elect to 'respectfully' disagree without compromising our professional integrity.

Those words speak volumes and it would just be great if everyone would keep them in mind when commenting and/or posting here.  The good old 'Golden Rule' - still works no matter where we are.

Hi Rich... it's great that you took the time to remind everyone about these guidelines.  I think that most people really do a fine job of following them and even those who occasionally step over the line, do it not out of poor intentions, but rather out of zeal or passion on a topic they are writing about.  Then again, perhaps some people are just meanies! :)

Rich,  It amazes me that people even need to be reminded to behave themselves, but I suppose with over 125,000 members, someone has to show their back side occasionally :)   Keeps it interesting, to say the least!

I have so enjoyed my overall experience here in Active Rain.  From being a newbie, to where I am now, it's all been a great experience...(if you figure out where I am, can you let me know?  I have no clue, lol)  I have learned SO darned much and never tire of logging on to what has become my place of comfort.  I am quite confident I am not alone in saying that.  I have made some wonderful friends that I"m sure I will meet someday.

Thanks for all that you do and bring to Active Rain.  You are priceless and I appreciate you!

Rich,

Well stated blog.  Thank you for placing all guidelines in one concise blog.  These are views we all know and understand, but I am afraid we do not always comply.  It would probably be good to remember that the many of these guidelines can apply beyond the AR world.
