Attention Buyers and those thinking about buying a home in New Hampshire.  Did you know that New Hampshire is the Third healthiest State in the United States?

New Hampshire Healthiest StateNEW HAMPSHIRE IS THE THIRD HEALTHIEST STATE IN AMERICA

When the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention compiled its 19th annual list, New Hampshire came in Number 3 in the Nation!  Next was Vermont ranked at #1 and Hawaii ranked at # 2!

The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Factors such as personal behaviors, the environment and community, policies of the national and state government as well as the care we receive are important components of what defines a healthy state.

New Hampshire received an excellent report card on having the lowest number of children in poverty and the best immunization coverage with 93% of children ages 19 months to 35 months receiving complete immunizations; a low violent crime rate; and a low infant mortality rate.

New Hampshire also did well with the number of premature deaths (5,858 - third in the United States both in 2007 and 2008) and the number of occupational fatalities (4.2 deaths per 100,000 workers, bringing the state from 15th to eighth in the country after last year's rating of 4.8 deaths).

Areas where New Hampshire faces some challengs was due to a lack of health insurance (from 10.6 percent in 2007 to 10.9 in 2008),

On a national level, Americans health stayed flat for the past 4 years.  The report notes the biggest challenges for the nation are obesity, smoking and lack of health insurance.  Check out where your state stacks up and download the report.

In addition, New Hampshire recently was chosen as the Most Livable State in America! --

New Hampshire let's be the Healthiest State in America in 2009!

Get out and snow shoe, ski, take a walk, take the dog for a walk go to the gym and start your diet, adopt a healthy lifestyle, laugh and enjoy life!

America's Health Rankings TM - 2008 Edition is the joint effort of United Health Foundation the American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention. It is funded entirely by United Health Foundation, a recognized 501 (c) 3 organization.

Hi Bill  -- I think it is all the raking of the leaves, shoveling of snow  -- then the spring clean up, the fall clean up and it goes on and on!  I'm off to the gym (hee hee).  MA was # 6 ... not too bad!

Joan that is not a bad catagory to be number #3 in.  I wonder where Connecticut placed on that list.  I will have to check it out later.

Joan, That's actually an interesting statistic!  I would have thought it had more to do with warmer weather and an abundance of fruits and veg-tables.....and it's not at all.  Thank you for sharing that.

Marcel~  It looks like Texas has a ways to go.  However, I am sure there are many areas in Texas that are better than others.

George~  Connecticut is Number 7 for 2008!  Congratulations -- that is great!

Carole~ I was surprised at the rankings.  However, it is interesting to note the criteria used.  Especially those environmental components and governmental policies.  New York ranked number 25 -- not bad!

Jennifer~   I recently met with a couple who found Nashua through one of those sites that evaluates low crime, shools, health etc.  I think this type of information does attract some buyer to consider relocating to this area.

Ellie  ~  I do think people thinking about relocating do want to know information like this.  Not only do we not have an income tax, but we are a healthy state as well!  Who could ask for more?  (oh, there is that thing about all that snow! (lol)!

Hi Renee Nevada may not be in the top tier, but it certainly has a lot to offer.  Each state has its own unique attributes.

Johnathan It is a very interesting report -- and it looks at many aspects of health, so I think that is why there seem to be some surprises.  Arizaona is nice and warm!  I could use a trip there right now (lol)!

Make it a practice as part of one's life plan to get regular exercise each day, even if it's just a 20-minute walk around the neighborhood. Doing so can create a micro-environment that is healthy and insulated from those national polls and statistics. Wear your professional shirt -- yes, I have t-shirts with my name and profession on them -- and you just might meet somone on your daily walks who needs your services.

Joan:  Now I am SURE... just totally sure (uh huh) that this is just a coincidence, but I looked at the report... and what a coincidence that seven of the top ten states are Northern Blue States... and ALL FIVE of the bottom five... 46 - 50... are all RED states.  Well... at least both areas seem to have their priorities straight... uh huh !  Joan... thanks for sharing.  Take care...

Hi Joan!  OOH--NH is doing FAR better than NC!  I thought we'd be about in the middle but, your report says that we're in the lower half!  Not too good!!  We do love our fried food here in NC--could be the cause, huh?!

Russell    I love your advice and the concept of creating a micro-environment that is healthy!  It is a bit too cold in New Hampshire right now to spend a lot of time outside -- we are going into our deep freeze month -- but I'll have to try this out at the gym where is is nice and warm!

Sandy I certainly wouldn't rule out Florida!  It is going to be soooo cold in New Hampshire this week!  I am sure a lot of folks would love to trade spaces for a few weeks right now (lol).

Karen Ann -- VERY INTERESTING -- I don't think anyone had done that analysis yet!  I love it --

Debe~ I know that NC has a lot going for it and many people from NH relocate/retire to NC when they get tired of all of the snow!  It seems each state has its pluses and minuses for sure.

Joan, it doesn't surprise me that New Hampshire ranked so high on the Healthiest list. It's such a beautiful state, you want to be outside to hike in the summer or take part in winter sports. My parents best friends retired to North Conway so they could cross country ski. Congrats NH!

Since I have no control over the health of others, nor even any input into their lives, and no one else has any control over how I take care of myself unless i let them (doctor, my marketing guru, etc.) which state is "healthiest" has no impact on me. I and I alone am responsible for my health in consultation with health professionals, and I spend at least 30 minutes each day taking care of my health.

Jim  I love your attitude and you make an excellent point.  It is important to be responsible for our own health in the choices we make every day.  However, living in San Diego is a great place to be and it is a lot easier to exercise there than in -16 degrees.  Enjoy good health, San Diego and the beauty that surrounds you.

Hi Joan, great blog. Living in Colorado for the past 30 years with all of the "outdoorsman" has actually rubbed off. I lost 25 lbs and have taken up snow shoeing....which by the way, is incredibly fun, relaxing and absolutely wonderful for the body. We trekked 4 miles at 10,000 feet....that sure got the heart pumping. I look forward to hearing more from you.
