Yes, it's a no brainer - my company's, Home Star Staging, success supports not only Collin County's economy but every area I do business in and that includes Dallas, parts of Denton and sometimes Tarrant counties as well.

This little piggy went to marketAs I go through the always fun task of getting my year end receipts together I was looking at the businesses I frequent for goods and services in my day to day life as a home staging professional in North Texas. These businesses depend on me and you to patronize them in order for them to stay in business too.

And if I'm a viable business I can afford to help keep their doors open too.

Below are some of most the frequently visited businesses I've supported specifically in Collin County this past year, including:

  1. Where the business is located
  2. How many times I purchased something while engaged in business directly related to my company Home Star Staging:
  • Public Storage, Parker & Avenue K , too many times to mention. This is where I warehouse my staging prop inventory but they collect monthly rental fees from 2 storage units I have located on their site
  • Goodwill Industries, 6104 Alma Rd, 24 times, go often and you'll find some great deals on home decor.  Didn't you know my home staging business was thinking "green"? Reduce, reuse, recycle!
  • McDonald's, various locations throughout Plano, TX, 19 times, what can I say? Janet, my staging assistant extraordinaire, likes their cookies... now about those extra pounders....
  • Pier 1, 2 Plano locations, 17 times
  • Garden Ridge, Garden Ridge Mall Avenue K, 13 times
  • Starbucks Coffee, various Plano locations, 13 times, I honestly thought it was more
  • The Thrift Store, 1806 Avenue K, 11 times
  • LaMadeleine, both Park Blvd. locations, 11 times
  • The Salvation Army, 5900 Avenue K, 11 times
  • Target, various Plano locations, 9 times
  • Office Max, 1201 N. Central Expwy, 8 times
  • Marshalls, 721 North Central Expwy, 8 times
  • Whataburger, 2548 Avenue K, 8 times
  • Corner Bakery, 941 N. Central Expwy, 6 times
  • TJ Maxx, 1717 E. Spring Creek Pkwy, 6 times
  • Tuesday Morning, 1701 Preston Place, 5 times
  • Chubby's Family Restaurants, 918 West Parker, 4 times
  • Kelly's Eastside, 1422 Avenue K, 3 times

Collectively these local Collin County merchants, along with many others with one or two time visits or in Dallas, Denton or Tarrant counties, comprised over $15,000 of goods and services purchased by Home Star Staging and funneled back into our local economy which fuels continued economic growth.

For a small business like myself, that is quite a bit of money however, my success and yours means their continued success as well!

As we begin the New Year please continue to support your local economy by supporting local merchants.

Hi Cathy,

You're right! I haven't gotten together my mileage for the year yet and I should include that later. I just claim the miles though but I've sure I've literally PUMPED thousands more this year into their stations!

Karen - I do the same though I must say that I'm especially biased towards Frisco - my neighborhood. Whenever it is possible, I will do business with Frisco merchants, then those around me.

As you can see Loreena, I'm also partial to Plano, where I live as well, so I hear ya!

Interesting, I also try to support local merchants whenever possible.  Even if its a little more expensive, its still worth it and I usually get better service.

Good points on service Lauren when you get better service you tend to be a repeat customer - worth mentioning to the manager if service is less than adequate too. Keep your local economy strong!

Great post, Karen.  Several of us Rainers made contributions at Kelly's when we met there last month!  I like to shop locally, too, in Addison.  I haven't compiled a list, but Sam's Club is probably near the top of mine.

Thanks Lorrie! Yes, one of those 3 times of mine for Kelly's was our AR gathering.

While I was going thru my receipts the idea for this blog came to me as a way to let local merchants know that they are being patronized and frequently in some cases by one local business and if they start to think about the other patrons and their return visits and expenditures then they'll see their value and worth to our community (and keep up the good work!)

Karen: This is a great idea for a staging post. I never thought of it that way, but we do spend and bring a lot of sales to our local economy. I try and shop in Pasadena whenever I can. It would take me a looong time to compile a list like yours, but I should do it so I am reminded of all the places I do business with ( and I can remind them!)

Hi Michelle you could do a top ten list of where you shop. I tend to be a creature of habit although I do shop a variety of places and areas, I just focused in and around Collin County - some of the merchants I visited only one or two times though were big ticket purchases, even though I didn't frequent their establishments, some made more than McDonald's did for sure from me ;-)

Great post Karen. There was a recent article in a local paper here that said that local business owners give back 80% to their communities in comparision to 40% from non-locally owned. We do support the economy.

Hi Tanya, that's a great statistic and I believe it! I wonder if that's true for most areas? Thanks for reading!

HI, Karen!

I like how you put this list together.  Nicely done.

I am slowly turning the Central Texas area around - maybe you can start on the North:  We call Garden Ridge:  "Garbage Ridge".  Not to put down their stuff, as I frequent it as well for accessories and chairs.  But as a commentary on how much Garbage you can buy in one visit.  Or the general state of their merchandising.  Whichever works for you!  :)

Hey Michael,

I won't comment on your nick name for the place but I can appreciate the amount of stuff one can walk out of there with - for cheap - especially when on sale (I hate when I have to break down and pay full price for anything!)  If there were a contest for the longest cash register paper receipts, they'd win hands down!
