I have seen some really unusual things before as an Atlanta home inspector, this one was really, really unusual.  And I really could not decide if it was smart or not so smart! Below is a picture that I took during this Alpharetta home inspection.

So here's the mark up that I put in the reoprt,

This is one of the reasons, I recommend a home inspection, I couldn't see this from the ground, and I really couldn't tell if it was sealed around well enough to keep water from penetrating the roof.  We have a water spigot on top of the roof along with a bracket for what I guess is a hose to slide through.  Now I have to admit, this is either the most unusual things I have seen or maybe the wisest things I have seen.  You see this house is surrounded by beautiful huge trees and the leaves are all in the gutters and on the roof.  So if I was going to clean the mess off the roof I would probably try and pressure wash it or at least hose it and the gutters off.  This home owner just took it a step further and put his spigot right there on the roof for easy access.

So the information is out and we're just waiting on the voice of the folks at Activerain, what do you think? Smart or not so smart?

David,

I never would have thought of that but it might be a new trend.

Brenda it's definitely different and yet, if I had to clean my roof I wouldn't mind having it handy.  I can't think of all the times I have almost been drug off the roof by the hose when trying to pressure wash it.  Thanks for stopping by.

Washing the roof I suppose?  Very 'unique'

I think it's a smart way to easily wash away leaves and other debris. They would have to check it periodically to make sure it remains sealed.

The above comment was from me!!

Did anyone ask the homeowner why?  Washing the gutter could be a good reason.  Warm climate, not much chance of freeaing...Why not!

Tim & Pam, washing the roof is my guess too.

Tony, I was wishing I thought of it.

William, No we didn't ask the home owner, they were not there at the home inspection.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting everybody.

Odd looking to say the least.  LOL
Were you able to see pipes from inside the attic?

David, The hook has to be a safety tie-off so that the person can utilize the sill cock to wash the roof is my best guess. Needless to say, that is quite strange...

Nancy,  yes it came straight up through the attic floor and right out the roof.  Everything checked out fine.  It just caught me a little off gaurd, but as a home inspector not much suprises me anymore.

I'm glad you explained what it was for because I would NEVER have figured it out.  Bet it's the first you've ever seen like that.

David what is the pitch of the roof? From the angle of the picture it looks incredibly steep. If it gets cold enough there and the pitch is steep maybe they created ice to slide off of it.
