Intentional Communities

My last post about CoHousing for Seniors generated tremendous interest and response. There are a lot of other ways in which peole copme together to form intentional living communities. Not all fit the general cohousing outlines in my previous post but most have elemnets of it. Intentional Community is an all inclusive term for ecovillages, cohousing, residential land trusts, communes, student co-ops, urban housing cooperatives, alternative communities, and other projects in which people strive to live together while pursuing a common vision. The link will take yo to a site that has many examples of all kinds of intentional living communities. There is even a link there to a magazine for those wanting ongoing information.

According to the website, there are over 1500 Intentional Communities of one sort or another in the United States. By this list, there are 45 either in existence or in the process of forming in New Mexico! You can view the list here and click on your location to see the ones nearest you. For the other bookworms out there ECOVILLAGES is an interesting informative read about the history or several intentional communities. There is also COHOUSING  and THE COHOUSING HANDBOOK. The other one that I have not read yet but seems to me might be very useful is THE COMMUNITY BUILDING COMPANION, 50 WAYS TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AND CREATE CHANGE IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD.

Colorado has 51 intentional communities, the majority in the metro areas like Denver and Colorado Springs. At first I was disappointed there weren't more in outlaying areas. But... in the metro areas mass transit could factor in it the Intentional Communities. So does that mean sprawl is not sprawling as fast? You have my brain buzzing Deb.

Dena, I think this kind of brain buzz is a good thing. I hope that the public transportation is part of the reason so many of these are urban.

Hi Deb - Michigan has 62, many of which appear to be just forming. I think Dena has hit the nail on the head about public (mass) transit which is lacking in so many Michigan communities. This certainly makes a case for "walkable" neighborhoods also.

Love the information on the website! Thanks for calling my attention to it!
