What is the basis for Happiness?

After I returned home from Church Services this afternoon, I had a thought on my mind.  What is the basis for my happiness?

It is a different answer for every person out there, this much I do know.  I do know that harmony in the home is a key component.  That isn't to say that Darcy and I always agree on everything, that is really a fantasy.  We have agreed that in some instances it is alright to disagree, I don't expect anyone to really think and believe as I do on all things.  I have some strong opinions, and respect other people's right to have their own opinions.

Darcy and I have agreed that nothing is more important to win, than our relationship.  By that I mean, it is perfectly alright to agree to disagree rather than get into a stupid argument that in all honesty, no one can win.  My dad used to say to me that no one wins an argument in a relationship.  Feelings are hurt and trusts weakend, so there is no winner.

The second area I believe that enhances personal happiness is the feeling of success and satisfaction in our careers.  I believe along with that you have to have fun and enjoy your work.  I believe that as part of that you need to be learning constantly in your profession.  I believe that you should be learning other things as well as what you think directly impacts your career.

I believe that to be happy, you need to have a positive self image.  You need to like and love yourself, not to the point of self adoration, just that you don't hate yourself.  That may mean exercise along with your efforts to improve yourself through education.  Set challenging goals, and hold yourself accountable, you will feel good as you achieve them.  I also believe that working hard is an important part of liking yourself.  Everyone needs to feel that they are accomplishing something in their lives.

I believe that to be happy you need to have a spiritual center in your life.  What ever religion you believe in, Believe in it!  Attend Church services, study scriptures, get that part of your life educated as well.  A large part of a spiritual center, is serving others.  Whatever you can find that you can do to help.  Shoveling the snow off a neighbor's driveway, or better yet, find an elderly neighbor and help them with the snow.  There are so many people in need, pick one area and work at it, I know that it is difficult to turn away anyone in need.  I still believe that the sense of accomplishment is satisfied if the effort is focused rather than spread very thin.

These are just a few things that struck me today as I thought how blessed and glad that I am for the happiness that I enjoy.  I know that I can do more and work harder to make myself happier.  Like I said, the list will most likely differ for most everyone else, but these are the core areas that I was able to identify in my life.  Make it a Great Week!

This is a great list of areas in our lives that really DO bring great joy. I think those are the core areas in my own life that have truly brought me the most happiness. Without the church, my family, and my sense of accomplishment in my career, there always seems to be something missing. That's why it's so important to continually work on improving yourself in those areas.

Thanks for sharing, Nicole Weidauer

Nicole and Kari, thanks for commenting.  I do believe that these are the core of happiness, there are many other things that bring us happiness, but to me, these 4 are still the basic values that I try to work on.
