I have to admit that when I started getting serious about Active Rain I would visit it two, three times a day.  I would be eating and breathing blog post ideas.  I would get up early in the morning to write a post.  Then I would brush my teeth and take a shower.

Then I found Facebook.  Yeah.  Sure.  Facebook has been around for ages.  It wasn't until recently that it took on a whole new aura for "old" people.  You know.  Non-college students. People that are out in the work world and want to connect for business.

Yeah, I know.  There is LinkedIn for "professionals" but, truth be told, Facebook is a lot more fun and it really does put the "social" into social networking.  In fact, I kind of like Facebook.  It doesn't take a lot of time.  You can establish relationships, of a sort, by commenting on people's status updates, join affinity groups, start business pages, fan pages and all kinds of neat and groovy stuff.

It' isn't the same as Active Rain.  Probably apples and oranges.  But it's an interesting phenomenon.

So...what about you?  What's the first page you turn to when it's time to do a little online "socializing"?  Active Rain or Facebook?

I've been torn between Facebook & LinkedIn......I haven't really used them for any social 'guerilla' marketing yet.....but I guess I should. Thanks for the wake-up call!

That depends on who I want to socialize with.  When i'm ready to check in with old friends I hit facebook and when I want to socialize with my newer work friends I hit active rain.  I actually go to facebook more often now because its an easy click from my phone.

I also have been drawn to facebook recently.  I signed up quite a while ago, but recently was asked to hook up with my neice and now I find myself on it quite frequently.  Lately I have been hooking up with 'rainers on facebook. It is fun.  Good networking, but not as likely to get google juice

Facebook is for socializing and for PROSPECTING, but so is Active Rain if you use it the right way, in a different kind of way!  I like the combination of both because it means more people to interact with on a regular basis!

I go to AR first.  I've just recently joined FB, like a month ago, so I'm not sure about how else to play around on the site except to just search for people.  I don't like LinkedIn.  It's not user friendly for what I would want it to be like.  AR has more information, and gets Google Juice where as FB does not.

Both!  I am in Facebook and Active Rain first thing in the morning and it's usually the last thing I do at night!

I'd have to say I visit Active Rain more, but I enjoy Facebook too.  Feel free to add me.

I keep facebook private and make it for family and friends.

Activerain is for real estate networking.  LinkedIn is for professional working.

I hesitate making facebook anything more then a private social network as you may lose the professional reputation if you aren't careful.

And, you can link your blog here to facebook so that what you write and post here also appears in facebook.  I like facebook too.

I admit, FB and AR are one on the two most visited sites, besides my email

12:41pm • #10

Neither but I use IE 7.0 which gives me multiple website tabs so I can use more than one website at a time including AR & Facebook! which version do you use? anyone downloaded IE 8 beta yet?

AR and FB are apples and oranges.

I use FB to stay in touch with family, friends and clients.

I use AR to learn and share what's working with others.

I check on both sites daily.

Ken,

I'm not a true internet "junque-y" YET (that's an '09 goal!)..... but I love to read the BLOG'S ,so it's AR that gets most of my attention!.... But, being nosey (or, "nebby" for the Pittsburgh readers!), I love to see who-knows-who on FaceBook!

Thanks for sharing,

I haven't done anything with Facebook yet. I keep up with Active Rain and get updates from Linked-in with groups I belong to.

It seems Facebook is starting to pick up steam for me, however AR is still the way I'm connecting with the most potential clients.  Speaking of which I need to send off some listings to a new military family who contacted me this morning :-)

My homepage at "home" on my desktop is Facebook. My homepage at all other times on my laptop is AR! (I would say that means 3 hours a day desktop, 21 hours a day laptop.) AR wins!

I like that I can quickly update Facebook from my Palm Treo. AR needs a mobile version.

WOW! Lots of good comments!  It seems that there are lots of ways to use both Active Rain and Facebook to both socialize and promote our business.

They are different.  I like Facebook as an informal way to stay in touch with people near and far and don't really see it as a forum for real estate.  ActiveRain is where I roll up my sleeves and get into the nuts and bolts of the biz.  LinkedIn is just okay for me. . .I find it to be very buggy.

Hi Ken;  I turn to Active Rain first. But you are right. Facebook is fun and have been getting into it more and more. Especially as more and more people that I know find me.

Ken, I like AR and Linked In.  Both different yet great.  Recently I've gotten into Twitter and also joined ecademy, just getting used to them now.

Thanks

I started on Facebook to connect with my teenagers and their friends and my neices and nephews.  It evolved into a hodge podge of business, friends and family.  It is tons of fun, and has great personal value.  AR is phenominal for the amount of knowledge I am soaking up, but I usually go to Facebook first to check on my people.

I spend 5-10 minutes in the morning and 5-10 minutes in the afternoon/evening in Facebook, writing comments about posts from my clients.  To me, Facebook is about interacting with my clients and their friends.  I want them to get to know me better as well as I can learn more about them...it makes for a deeper relationship.

Facebook. It's fun and I can be silly. AR means I have to be serious and professional.

I use facebook for keeping in touch with clients, finding old friends, and like-minded people.  I post here more for fun and in attempts to build up and keep in front of my sphere of influence (my BIGGEST weakness).

Myspace I use for communicating with my good friends.

Active Rain I use for inspiration and to share and gain new ideas and for professional networking.  Plus because it is work related it gives me a good excuse to have some fun during the day and still be working.
