Shell GirlSo often in our coming into a new year we are asked to come up with plans, resolutions, and ideas to make things better. A good suggestion before making any new decision on a new direction to take in life is to examine your values. Simply put, what is important to you? Don't fool yourself. To thine own self be true. The WORST person to lie to is ourselves. The 9-11 event made many people re-assess what was important to them at their core. A good exercise in this area for meditation is

Listening To The Quiet and Hearing Something.

Sounds kind of daffy doesn't it? How can you listen to nothing and hear something? Hey it works with putting that shell up to your ear.

Sometimes the quiet can come from a still noiseless room where you shut your eyes. Sometimes it is out in nature by yourself. First you have to let the quiet absorb your being and then you have to let you thoughts flow to where you are happy. What are you doing? Who are you with? Where are you at? It sounds a bit Zen I must admit but it is a great exercise to try into the new year for 15 minutes or so. What do you have to lose? You may just hear something that will make the world of difference this year in your life.

Beautiful, Gary...and these times necessitate so much soul-searching, deep listening, still, small voices trying to come out of their shells to tell us about Truth...

Gary- well said.  Too often we fail to allow ourselves that "quiet moment" of reflection.  Deep thinkers know how important this technique is to allow solutions time to germinate in the quiet and bloom into viable ideas.

SInce we are in control of what we want to change and how we chosse t change it- a quiet time strategy meetingof the mind is oneof the best ways to put that plan into effect!

Happy New Year Gary- from one deep thinker to another!

Gary, I was just thinking about this.  Dad has always said that when we stop YAPPING and sit still, then we will be open to hear small voices.  And that's exactly what I'm going to do tonight as I have two contracts to write tomorrow that will be difficult.  So, being calm in the storm is kind of nice.

HI Gary, the old adage is true. You have two ears and one mouth. Use them accordingly. There is nothing like the silence of the middle of the night on a snowy evening to get in touch with your inner self. Anyone who has taken a midnight walk on a night like that knows that the world seems clearer to them.

Very nice Gary.

One of the things I miss about commuting to New York City is the forced down time I would get each evening on the bus ride home.

This would be my time to stare off into traffic and just collect my thoughts, my ideas and yes, even my dreams.

It is so rare I stop to think like that.

Even when driving alone, I usually find someone to talk to on the phone.

Thanks for reminding me to try to make some time to listen to nothing!

Mara: I very much like your term "deep listening." You are such the poetic self with your words.

Allison: Great thoughts as always. Happy New Year to you as well.

Barb: Meditation is time well spent. Good luck with the contracts.

William: Taking those hunting and fishing trips have to be relaxing and serene.

Michelle: Snow so muffles the air. I love snowy nights.

JoAnna: That commute on the bus sounded like it helped gather your thoughts. We all should have a regular routine like that.

Gary:  Quiet time?  What's that?  Just kidding.  It is important to quiet the world's interruptions and figure out what is important to us.  I see my husband struggle with this one constantly.  He hates his job, but makes a great living.  In his late-30's it's hard to make a career switch.  I just hope I can put a few phenomenal years together in my real estate career to make it possible for him to do something he actually enjoys for a living.

Gary, I trhink a lot of us do not know what to do with silence..we're so inundated with sights and sounds, but I do believe it's a good idea to listen to the silence once in a while.

Chris Ann: Life is too short to stick with something you hate too long. Hope your husband can make that transition to something he likes sooner rather than later. Be your partner in real estate!!

Bill: SOLD SOLD SOLD. Now that interruption of your silence is a good thing.

Barb: If you are squeamish about silence you need to spend more time there I agree.

JL: Be true to yourself!

Elizabeth: That's funny. Some people thrive better in the noise.

Pat: Thanks, you are too kind with your words as always. Now Pat, the man ALWAYS gets to lead in the dance. It is in the rule book. Then again I think you threw that book out. I'll check the YouTube.

Gary - One thing people don't know and would ever guess is that I love the quiet of my house when nobody is home. It's during this time that I am most productive - both physically and mentally!

It probably wasn't very nice of me to complain to my son about him coming home early from work last week. But, I was really enjoying time with the thoughts in my head. Silence can be great - when we need to hear ourselves think!

Gary, Thanks for the reminder. I am, now, going to listen to the quiet. A bit of deep breathing helps tho hear the inner sounds.

Justin: Peaceful and relaxing is where the quiet starts, then listen.

Carol: That's funny about your son and wanting "your" quiet time. It is valuable though.

Hi Pat: Well you are right. You definitely have you own rule book, as do I. A "D" thing Pat. Stay tuned for more 12 yr. old mind thoughts.

Margaret: It's great when you actually concentrate on the quiet, and yes, you can hear your breathing.

I sometimes get my best ideas from total silence ... it allows you to be more introspective! Thanks for a nice post.

I wish I could...but I can never get silence, or quiet. My mind is always going. Sometimes I think my brain is full and trying to find a spot to put something. But I still keep trying to find it!

Gary, I found a prayer on Marianne Williamson's site that this post brings to mind.  I've printed it and I've been saying it every day since 1/1.  Dear God.  May every aspect of my being be converted to Truth.  May ever cell fall into place and serve a higher plan.  I no longer wish to be who I was.  I wish to be more.  Amen.

I just love this prayer and it brings me to a quiet place.

Gary

I have always been an outdoorsman. It is amazing how once you get used to it you can sit quietly in the outdoors for hours at a time just listening to the sounds of nature.

Richard: That's exactly what I am talking about. The ideas thrive for you in stillness.

Sherry: An active mind doesn't mean you can't find quiet. You just have to focus on quietness or go somewhere where there is no normal sounds of the busyness of life.

Hi Susan: That is an awesome prayer. YOU DO have a strong sense of spirituality. If all our eyes could only be opened to the TRUTH all the time, we would be far better off. We would not fool ourselves. We all should be MORE each day of our lives as we take another step on the journey. The trick is to have the courage to make the changes once we understand the truth. Incredible insight with that prayer Susan. xxoo

Trey: I think the true outdoorsman understands quiet. Nothing like fishing or hunting very early in the morning when the world is quiet.

I find that if I go for a run in the morning, with my dog, but not a friend, I can think better, and learn in the quiet.

Hi Gary-This such a beautiful post. You out did yourself. The line below from your blog is such a special reminder to take the time to do that everyday. That is where you will hear God's voice the loudest. This year and from here on out that is the voice that I will hear the loudest when it is the quietest. Each and everyday. That is truly the only way I will be completely at peace.

"Listening To The Quiet and Hearing Something"

Your blog is something that when I sit here quietly and soak in your words it is almost like I can hear you saying them in a gentle comforting voice full of reassurance and kindness and filled with unconditional friendship and acceptance. I appreciate that more than words can ever possibly convey.  Have a blessed and wonderful week. (((HUG)))) for you.

Gary, it is so true!  I spent a four days isolated from business and away from cell reception.  Made me really think about what I really wanted.  One day, I'll own a souvenier shop in the woods!

Gary, I certainly connected with this post....there is an awful lot to be heard in the silence--it's often how many answers come to me.  I make time for the people and things I love---and that's what I want to keep doing this year.

Too often do we full our minds with mundane noise, preventing us from hearing what we need to hear. Beautiful post Gary. I think I'll do some meditation before going to bed tonight. Just to relax, come back to center! Thanks! ~A:)

Gary, so cute that you wrote this. My power was off for an hour yesterday afternoon because of the ice we had and my son and I were talking about how nice it was to just have everything quiet.

We all have to listen for that "still small voice" we all hear if we just listen.

Hi Gary, Great advice...sounds a bit like meditating, which I have always wanted to learn how to correctly do.  How often do we stop and take time to find out what we want, and listen to what we are telling ourselves?  Not often enough, I'm afraid.

Hi, Gary

The timeliness of this post for me is impeccable. It reminds me of what Charles Haanel said in The Master Key System -- "...We should therefore, seek the Silence frequently. Power comes through repose; it is in the Silence that we can be still, and when we are still, we can think, and thought is the secret of all attainment..." While the past few months have been challenging and unsettling on a personal level, I am slowly learning to find that silence and hear what it is telling me. It is an ongoing exercise for me, but these moments have alas brought some answers that I have been looking for for a very long time.

Gary - There is so much truth in your esoteric title.  In my life, when I've gone through periods whih were a bit overwhelming, I've always needed to get by myself, get quiet, and have the answers emerge from silence and find me.

Gary, I love quiet time! In the summer all alone in my flower garden (and weeds) I love it there by the lake the only noise to be heard is the birds, a duck and ohhhthe thoughts that run through our mind when we are alone.  The beauty of nature among the quietness, tells us to also live today for yourself, the thoughts of yesterday thankful that you took the time.   It is always so pleasure-able to read your posts, Thank you.

Quiet time is so important and I can definitely improve in this area.  It allows us to clear our thoughts, be at peace, and take in our surroundings.  It's during these times a great idea can come to mind!

I've always enjoyed quiet time outside. Listening to the birds or wind gives me a sense of peace. Now that it is winter and I'm indoors more I find myself shutting off the radio in the car and just having quiet time. I think our souls need it.
