I've noticed lately that many of the featured bloggers almost never comment on my blogs.  I'm not offended and I don't expect anyone to visit or comment on my blogs unless they feel inspired to do so.  But, if I'm not getting reciprocating comments from these folks, I'm wondering if many others on the featured blogger's comment list didn't get a visit either.

I've written several blogs having to do with this very topic.  More than anything else because I'm always fascinated to know why people do what they do here in the rain.  So when I see a lesser known AR member get Featured for the first time or even second or third time,  I wonder to myself...Are they taking this opportunity to really reach out to other Active Rainers who left a comment on their blog?   Not too long ago I wrote a blog about the Tremendous Opportunity We Have When We're Featured.  Take advantage of this opportunity.

Don't get me wrong.  You won't be able to connect with everyone.  But you'd be amazed how many folks out of the list of comments might be worth getting to know better.  When I finally got my first featured blog.  It hit me almost instantly that if I wanted to maximize my time here on AR I had an incredible opportunity to do it after getting featured.  I had over 40 or so people comment, many I had never conversed with before, who I had a potential to build a business or personal relationship or both over time.  Why not!Relationships Start with Your Comment

I've also had the opportunity to find people who's blogs I find helpful or interesting to read and so after commenting on a couple of their posts, I decided it was worth adding them to my list of AR bloggers that I subscribe to.

Plus some of those subscribers reciprocated and now we comment on each others blogs all the time and it's been great getting to know them better.

I mean - it's about nurturing the relationship right.  Well I can't think of a better way to do it then right here on Active Rain.

I've learned so much from so many people; Katerina and Nestor Gasset, Jennifer Allan, Loreena Yeo, Jason Crouch, Brad Andersohn, Liz Moras, Elizabeth Weintraub and many more.  Just wanted to mention a few bloggers who I have reached out to and vice-versa and have gotten to know better over this past year.

So the next time you get the opportunity to get featured, while you're jumping up and down, doing the AR Featured Rain Dance, getting excited and thanking the AR G-ds, remember...you have an opportunity to reach out and get to know some of those folks who commented on your blog.  Likely out of the 40 or so (maybe even more) who commented, you might find that there are 10 or even 20 or so worth getting to know better.

So how do you start?

1) Acknowledge their comment on your post and if you can continue a conversation with them that's related to your original blog, mention that in your comment.  That commenter may come back to comment again.  The beginnings of beautiful relationship I say.

2) Visit each commenter's blogs and see if any of them inspire you to make a comment on one of their blogs.

3) And if they're blogs are interesting, beneficial and helpful to read  - then go ahead and subscribe to them and keep in touch by visiting their blogs from time to time to make a comment that adds to their post or starts a good conversation related to the topic.

4) Once you feel comfortable enough - reach out even further.  Send a personal email or if you feel brave enough, give them a call.  A quick hi just wanted to introduce myself personally and let them know you've enjoyed their blogs will go along way to building a lasting and possible profitable relationship down the road.

So what are you waiting for?  See who you can connect with today!

Dear Jessica,

Thanks for your post! If I am ever featured I have some great suggestions from you.

When someone comments on my post, I e-mail them personally. I have noticed that many bloggers just reply in the posts comments. What do you think is better?

I haven't been actively blogging long enough to figure out the etiquette.

Thanks,

Barbara

Terrific Jessica as always! I just redid I theme I posted on earlier.....I think this is so important and good to remember...........it really depends on why a person blogs - but if they're wanting to building relationship, readership and networks THIS is the way to do it! :-) Thanks for the mention! :-)

Barbara - That's great that you send a personal thank you email to those who comment.  People love that.  Overall if your goal is to build relationships here than it's about getting to know people and you can do that overtime be connecting with some of the people who comment on your blogs by checking out their blogs and commenting over there.  Over time, if this continues you get to know them better and you never know...they may one day have a buyer whose looking to buy in your area  - so you both gain something.

Liz - Yeah!  I'm so glad you stopped by to visit!  You're always worth the mention :)  It think to really ramp up some opportunities for business and just networking leveraging the opportunity to connect with others, especially after being featured, can really increase someones business.  But I agree with you there are other blogging techniques that shouldn't be forgotten about - like blogging to buyers and sellers directly and of course throwing in a few listings or 2.  All in all it's a winning combination :)

Jessica:  I guess I am more than a little surprised at your post here.  The idea you mention of commenting back to those who comment on your post... that's something I have been trying to do since day one... over seventeen months ago.  I guess I am surprised that your post makes it sound like few people do that.

The purpose of blogging, posting and commenting is to build relationships with people... at least that is the way I see it.  Although it is not always possible... I try to answer each comment with one back to them... right there in the body of comments underneath the post.  It just seems to me that it's not only the right thing to do... it's also the smart thing to do.

And reciprocating... going and visiting the blog posts of those who comment on your posts.  Again, that only makes good sense.  And what a great way to meet new people.  Again... there are times when it can be overwhelming... especially when there are a lot of comments.  I do what I can... with what energy I have.

Great ideas in your post.  They really add up to the only way to do things here on Active Rain... and in life in general.

Barbara:  Emailing someone personally is a great idea... BUT... unless there is something very personal in the email you send to them... then the sending of the email takes your comment back to them... OUT of the stream of comments... and does not allow anyone else to comment on that comment.  The more comments take place, and then comments on those comments... the better the give and take, and "flow" of the comments gets.  Does that make sense ?  take care...

Jessica,

Nice post.   I am new to AR.  I only have 5 posts so far but I was surprised when my first post got featured.  I acknowledge and comment back to everyone that comments on my posts. I visit their profile, check where they are from and try to learn a little more about them.  In some cases, I did go on their blogs and commented on one of their post but I don't think I did it for everyone.  I will take your tip and revisit the comments received in my first post to insure that I visited the blogs of everyone that commented on my first post as well as my other posts.   I look forward to nurturing more relationships on AR.   Thank you for the tips.

Karen Anne - I absolutely agree with you 100%.  That's the whole point of networking.  And there's many of us out there who connect with others in this way (visiting a commenters blog to reach out and comment to them).  But I've noticed how many don't reach out.  Not that it's a big deal, but every time I get featured - it's like Christmas (or for me Chanukah) - I get a ton of new people to meet and maybe get to know a little bit better.  That's what I love about it.

Gerry - You're on to a great start here on the rain and by the way - Welcome!  The feature gives you the opportunity to meet people you may have not found before in the rain and vice versa.  Of course there will be folks you visit who blog about topics that don't interest you or inspire you and you move on (you only comment if you want to - never feel obligated to comment).  However, there will be a few you'll check out and find that they are interesting to read about, you have some common ground and you're inspired to comment on one or more of their blogs.  Those are the golden nuggets towards building some great relationships here.  You never know when you will need a great agent in let's just say...Salt Lake City, UTAH and if you've built a relationship with someone here then you can send a referral and of course you never know when others will refer you.  So it's worth the giving to recieve the good karma down the line.

I have only been featured once, so I really can't say, but I do appreciate everyone who makes a comment on my posts, even if they only leave me one-liners.

Hi Jessica:   I've tried to do that daily, not just when an article is featured.  I find that if I take an extra 10 minutes or so I can read and comment on 5 people that I haven't "met" before.  I enjoy that.

Robert - Me too.  Features are an opporunity to really meet some interesting and great people you may not have stumbled upon here before.  It's just a great opportunity.  Keep blogging and keep reaching out :)

Kris - I try to do the same and you're really great about reaching out.  Featuring is just an extra bonus - and a huge boost, especially for the newer folks here to get some exposure - which makes connecting with some a little easier.  I like your strategy though -I'm going to try to add that into my day.  Thanks for sharing :)

Hi Jessica - I'm a firm believer in reciprocal commenting.  Sometimes it's more difficult if your commenter has not posted in a long time, or if their style of posting makes commenting a stretch.  But usually I can find something positive to say, even if it's "I just popped over to say hi".  Some members are extremely popular and simply don't have the time to visit with everyone.  I think we can recognize the person who puts in the effort and we can then start that wonderful two-way conversation.  Like us :-)

Hi Jessica - I am a HUGE supporter of this and love all that I learn from the comments left for me - often someone's comments will be just the thing that prompts me to go over and check out their blog - doesn't hurt to have great content too!  I think the benefits of commenting whether you get a feature or not are key to building relationships.  I also appreciate you stopping by my recent post and loved your comments - so nice to be missed - as I have equally missed you and hope to catch up soon! Wishing you a great rest of the week. ~Anne Marie

I really do try but time is not my best friend right now. There are that I do my best to give personal acknowledgements but then there those that I just share my feedbacks/ comments with more of some more I want to discuss.

When you get featured, there are some that leave Great post comments. It's hard to expand on it more.

Jessica,

I think it takes time to become known and some people sit back and watch for a while.

I wish more people would comment but I can't let that stop me!

Jessica, it's rare (but a real treat) to have a featured post. My objective when I post is either to ask for or give information, and from time to time, to also entertain.

And like you, I try to acknowledge people who comment on my blog, either by responding to their comments on the blog itself and/or their own blogs. In time, we get to build some relatinoshiops, look for those we like to read, etc. It truly is a community.
