I hope no one else got ripped off but we did. There goes that bad taste in my mouth for paying for marketing these days unless it is Google adwords or Yahoo. the real estate home show ripped us off

We got a call from a salesperson last month for the Real Estate Home Show. They were having a special and it was a great price for putting our listings on Direct TV with a special package of being promoted and viewed in England and other European countries.

Even after we signed up we were called up by another salesperson who tried to sell us another spot and I told him I first wanted to see how the spots we just bought were going to work out.

I even told the sellers who had homes that this would be a good venue for that their homes were going to be on Direct TV and viewed by millions of people. I printed up the marketing flyers the company offered to show and use with our clients.

We had planned to get them going right after the new year. So last Friday I went in to reserve our spots and my link did not work.

They had sent me a receipt with the link right on it and when I clicked that link, I got the:

"This page can not be displayed" page.

I thought, OK, maybe there was something wrong with my connection to my wireless router. So I went to my computer that is hard wired to my router but the same thing happened.

Then I said, well, let me give them another day. Maybe their website is down.

So I clicked on the email link to contact the company to check on the problem.

The email was a contact form that came right back with "Internal Service error". Hmmm. this is not looking too good and suddenly I got that sick feeling in my stomach.

You know, the one that gives you the feeling of, " You just got screwed!".

They had a phone number on the receipt they sent to us so I started calling the phone number. The phone just rang and rang. No message, no answer.

Still giving them the benefit of the doubt I waited until today to check again. I went through the same steps today and still could not even get their website for agents.

Finally after much playing around with different extensions to their web address I was finally able to locate what appeared to be a working part of the site.

I clicked on the agent login tab there and got, "Directory Listing Denied."

I scrolled down to the bottom of the page and saw a link with the main company name, " Explicit Media Inc." I clicked on that and guess what I found there!

"We have ceased operations due to economic conditions"

You mean," Due to economic conditions we decided to screw all the agent we collected money from!"

Yep, no notice, no nothing! How rude is that!

I have put in a request for a refund through an email that may or may not work even though their site says there are no refunds.

But here is the kicker! You can't get on to your accounts, the business shut down, but the one page that does work is the SPECIAL OFFER page with a form to add your VISA account info and pay money to buy more shows!!!!!!!!!

Guess where this page is going! Straight to the Florida State Attorney General's office and the FTC!

This is not the same company as Real Estate Shows by ResPres- Jeff Turner! His product is awesome, he is still in business and every agent should buy his real estate shows.I have been using the real estate shows for 2 years now.

Katerina,

What a bummer. Sorry you had to be the guinea pig for the rest of us. Don't worry what comes around goes around.

WOW!  You hear about it all of the time, you think that you've taken the necessary precautions and you still get it stuck to you.  No matter the amount, it was hard earned money and I can only empathize with you.  I am so sorry.

Nestor and Katerina, man that stinks!  We had something a showing desk service give us 4 hours notice that they were ceasing operations.  The good news was that it was a month to month service.  Good luck with the AG and the FTC.

Hi Katerina!
I am so sorry that you went through this...let's hope the authorities can do something.  Thanks for the heads up!

Sal- I am just warning everyone! It is water off a duck's back. It is not the money, it is that they are still taking money!

Leolinda- I checked out all their references, everyone was on the up and up except that they failed to say they were going out of business. I want to warn others to not let this happen to them!

Dear Nestor and Katrina,

Sal beat me to my comment--What a bummer!

I guess if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Thanks for the warning!

David- I want them to take down their Special Offer! How dare they continue to take money when they are closed for business!

Paula- I am not upset and not a victim of this. The money can be made over and over again. It is the idea that these folks have the nerve to keep their ordering page up! I don't want others to get screwed!

Barbara- I want to make sure no one else pays and if anyone has to come forward so we can make the complaint together for more power to make them take down their ordering page if nothing else works!

What form of payment did you use? There might be some recourse. Thanks for sharing your experience so others will not have to endure this.

Katerina - Sorry it happened to you.; there is just so much fraud going around.  That is really interesting  that the only working page is the one requesting your card information.  Let us know how it worked out.

Margaret- I think it was past the 30 days in which I think we have, but I will check into that. The time it takes to do all that may not be worth my energy, time and effort. It is stopping them from doing it to others and finding the others who this may be rougher on to lodge the complaint.

Bryan- The learning thing destroys trust. That is the sad part. The show was very good and effective and lots of agents used the show. They must not have known how to run their business.

Our local news just aired a similar story in Las Vegas. A man was selling slots in a cable real estate show, but nothing was ever produced. I hope that the Florida AG is able to prosecute this business.

OMG, that just sucks. I'm sooooo sorry. There are so many scams and scam artists circling like vultures we all have to become exceptionally careful. I feel that sick thing in my tummy too. I hate that for you.

If you need anything just call. I would be happy to help. Hugs, Deb

Deb- I am just fine. It is not I that I am concerned about. It was just money. But for some agents that would really put them in a bind. I am concerned about other agents out there who may not have their ads aired now either. Thanks for your hugs!

The had to know they were going to cease operations.  Companies just don't fold up that quickly.  Sounds like more than lousy business practice here.  Definately contact your states attorney general.

Katerina,

Thanks for the lesson you learned the hard way. I hope you get your money back. There have been so many things to watch this past year: getting gift cards from stores that may or not be in business this year and I guess it shows everyone is having a tough time. The big difference is if you know you can't fulfill the services you are offering you don't take people's money and continue to advertise to do so!

I am so sorry you this happened, have you called your credit card company and disputed the charges? Since you didn't get the service, they can reverse the charges even if the company has gone out of business.

I blogged about this company in 2007.  They were so rude and insistent that their product was far superior to ANYTHING that I could possibly do for marketing and that the price was so good, they couldn't see why I wouldn't just sign up...after all, all my competitors were doing it!  UGGH!  It was terrible.

I blogged about it on the Point2Agent blog site, RELIBERATION and you can google "Keeping a promise to a rude company" if you want to find out how that experience with Real Estate Home Shows went.  I am sorry you got ripped off by these guys, but I'll bet that Jeff Turner is happy that they won't be around to confuse agents between a REALLY GREAT PRODUCT like he as with Real Estate Shows and these rip off guys with only one word extra to differentiate the two!

10:15am • #35

Make sure that you notify your credit card company.  They can sometimes reverse the charges and go after the company.

That's awful - there is so much of that going around.   I am pretty much an automatic no to anyone who calls me - in one way or another, I have been sorry when I sign up for these things.  Unless I find it myself and approach them - forget it.

My husband and I were just talking yesterday that it almost seems like we have to start asking business people "Are you going to make it?"

I would report that site to the attorney general.  That is just horrible.

I do feel bad for Jeff Turner that some people may mistake his company for that one.

Katerina, I am so sorry for this happening to you.  I know it's not the money for you.  It's having to deal with disreputable people that you trusted.  I'm glad you reported their site - how can they get away with keeping that site running when they are no longer in business?  Good for you!

I would try challenging the charges with your credit card company based on fraud.  We had a similar situation and the merchant bank reversed the charges and credited our account.

Thanks everyone for your awesome support and comments. As I said in previous comments, I am not so much concerned with the money we lost. We can always make more money. I am concerned that they still have a page up that takes money and how many other people did they rip off? If they will come out and tell me than we can do a class action complaint to the states and feds who have jurisdiction. I will let you know what transpires. I am off to write some localism posts about short sales and to write a post about how I am using Twitter for business and more. Katerina

Sorry to hear about your problems.  You definitely should dispute the charges with your CC company. You might also want to call the attorney general in your state to see if they can do anything, and it wouldn't hurt to contact the better business bureau, although I doubt they subscribe. We as Realtors seem to get hit up for every kind of advertising telling us how they will make us rich.  We really have to watch out for the sheisters out there.

Tracy and Brett- Please email me your info, name, phone, address, so I can compile the list to give to the powers that be. I got a call from another agent and he got a refund from American Express because the contract said that he had a year to use his shows. He bought his in April and went in to order the show on Jan 1 and saw the same thing I saw.

Katerina,

Don't you hate it when you get to be the trial agent for something like that? So sorry. That really stinks and that they continute to solicit payment when they are out of business is ludicrous. We bought some leads and were the guinea pigs for that. Yuck. Thanks for spreading the word. :)
