Do you like the picture of my friend? Cute little guy, huh. This is the mascot for Adium. He greets me every morning and puts me to bed every night. My husband is sometimes jealous of him, but my friends love him. And recently, so do my clients!
Adium is a multi-instant-messenger program. There are other programs that do the same thing, Gaim being the most popular. (Macintosh Platforms are not suppported by Gaim, hence the Adium.)
Instant Messaging is on our computers, our cell phones, and many popular places like MySpace. I decided long ago that messaging would be a wonderful way for my clients to instantly get a hold of me, (me giving my personal service and all), without it being as intrusive and exclusive as phone calls are. I can handle messaging people at the same time of doing my laundry, or making lunch for my little ones. I work at home for that very reason, after all! But when I was on Yahoo, I would have MSN people who couldn't chat, and when I was on MSN, my Aim and Macintosh friends couldn't chat. Then I noticed Dave on my "Buddies" List was on every program I was trying to open. I finally asked David, "How does your computer handle opening 3 or 4 different programs at the same time?" His one word answer: Gaim.
Being my Googling self, I found Gaim, which directed me to Adium and I have been a happy duck ever since! Even a shy client I have been trying to get to warm up to me was online and I could finally understand her needs clearer and better than ever before. We are looking at homes together on Wednesday!
Here are my hints:
Just like blogging, Instant Messaging is about a conversation, not a sales pitch. It is not always about grammer and punctuation, but DON'T SHOUT, tyr adn dubble chekc spelling before you hit return, and don't say anything online you wouldn't say in person.
If you have clients with Yahoo or Hotmail addresses, these are often their Instant Messaging ID's. Add them as your contacts, and see who pops up.
Place your status as away if you leave your computer on, but aren't at the computer. That way people can still leave you messages, knowing you will get them, but won't wonder why you aren't responding.
Place your Instant Messenger contact names in your website profiles to give others the chance to add you as a friend.
Good Luck and Happy Chatting!
