Old linoleum that does not contain asbestos can be given a face lift to look brand new.  So before you spend hundreds of dollars replacing that linoleum in your rental unit.... Try this.  Use a rotary sander with an abrasive paper to scratch up the surface of the old linoleum.  Remove the dust  coating,  then paint the floor with a good quality floor enamal paint. You can brush or roll on the paint and add stencils or apply a sponge or rag roll paint with a different color.  Once your paint job has completely dried, add a coat or two of polyurethane and the old linoleum with work and look brand new for a fraction of the cost.

I have NEVER heard of this!  Does the paint scratch easily?

Interesting -- Have you known anyone who has tried this and I also ask if it is durable with kids and pets.

Hi Diane,

Sounds like a very creative option.  It would mean you could customize the flooring to whatever decor you wish.  Great suggestion.  Thanks.

I have never thought of painting linoleum.  I will check this out with our painting company.

Sounds like a good way to save some dollars and the landfill too. Glad you mentioned about asbestos old linoleum often contains that in it as does the adhesive too.

We did something like this in an old storage room and it turned out pretty good.  Got quite a few compliments on it.

This does work very well with 2 coats of poly finish.  If the tile/linoleum is pre 75 vintage it may contain asbestos I do not recommend doing this without knowing first.
