When Water Meets Rock....the Cedar River Today

By

When water meets rock, water always wins. (Think the grand canyon) Today many Washington State residents are dealing with the aftermath of record snowfalls followed by days of very heavy rain.  Here in Maple Valley, the Cedar River is swollen and raging like I haven't seen in the 14 years I've lived here. Many homes have flooded and I've been told emergency evacuations are going on down the road from my office. I hope everyone is safe and or soon will be!

This was what greated me on my way to work this morning:

Road Closed on Highway 169 to Cedar Grove Rd due to evacuations

King County Sheriff's Vehicles (one with a jet ski on trailer). These homes are behind the Grange on Maple Valley Highway.

Flooding on Cedar River in Maple Valley

A view from the other side of the bridge.

My son lives on the Cedar River and fortunately his house has not flooded. According to King 5 meteorologist, the Cedar has likely crested and should begin to receded. Which is good.

I'm scheduled to show riverfront property to a client flying in tonight.

Think I'll wear boots.

I can't tout flood insurance enough. People think, "Oh, I don't live in a flood plain; there are no rivers or lakes near me," and they forget about snow melt and excessive rain. You can be flooded if you live on top of a mountain, for crying out loud.

Charles, not me! I'm high and dry...but that's why I get all the snow ;-)

Elizabeth, my motto is never say never!!

Lisa, it was unreal. What was really interesting was how loud it was (is still). Normally the river has such a soothing sound, today it really was awesome in the truest sense of the word.

Colleen - I was talking to friends and family yesterday making sure that everyone was safe, I was worried what would happen when all the record snow fall would melt.  I was watching video from Snoqualmie Falls last night and I've never seen it like that.  Stay safe.
