Seven Tips for Smart Decorating

Everyone has their own style, whether we're talking about clothes, houses or anything in between.

And when you mention decorating, well, there are just as many different styles as thentryere are people.

But if you are currently trying to sell your home, or are getting ready to put one on the market, you have to realize that not everyone will think that the way you have your home decorated will also work for them.  So neutrality is the key.

And you also have to be smart in the decisions you make when you decorate and prepare to sell.  So here are seven tips to help you do the most with your home.

Rule #1...Remember that it's your home, and not a storefront or a museum.  You live there, paying your bills and helping your kids with their homework, so treat it as such.  Always think comfortable, practical, cozy and welcoming first -- but you can still follow your style, whether it be dramatic, modern, formal or anthing else that pleases your tastes.

bathroomDon't blow your budget.  The Greater Charelston area is home to so many great and affordable shopping alternatives including, but not limited to, wholesale and consignment stores.  In addition, you could use what you have.  Rearrange your furniture, use slipcovers or pillows, paint the room a different color.  You can make dramatic changes without spending dramatic amounts of money.

It's your house; it's your rules.  Every room serves its own unique function, which means that some rooms compliment one another while other living areas can be intentionally contrasting.  Who says that just because you have a casual great room that can't have a more formal living area?

Liven up every room.  Energ comes from living things.  From real flowers to green plants, from cacti in a neat pot to a mini-aquarium, you'll notice the ambiance boost almost immediately.  Indoor container gardening can bring energy, clean the air, produce herbs, and so much more!

Use the basic approach of stagers.  Any stager will tell you that less is more, but less is ofter better living areathan more.  Just because you own it doesn't mean you have to display it.  Consider rotating some of your accessories, or if you really don't need it, you could donate it to Goodwill.

Go ahead -- get a little crazy.  Paint one wall your favorite accent color.  How about a wallpaper border, stenciling or applying a faux finish to the walls?  Hang those photos just a little lower than you normally would to add some interest.  Add that lamp that's just different enough or place that shelf just a tad off-center.

Don't be afraid to ask for help.  Decorating does not come naturally for everyone.  If your budget allows, consider the services of an interior designer.  Also, the stores you shop in most likely offer design services or can offer a great reference.  And, if you like how your friend decorated their house, just ask them for a few suggestions!

The last tip is probably one of the best ones on the list!

All too often, people just don't know what they don't know!

And, a second opinion before jumping in to any project is always a good idea.
