Alert OC

As most of us know (witnessed by the recent fires in So Cal)  a disaster can happen with or without Brea Fire 2008any notice and situations can change in a blink of an eye.  Orange County has set up a system AlertOC.com  by which participating cities can notify local residents in the event of an emergency.

Folks living in these participating cities are advised to register their personal contact information into into the data base to be notified when emergency situations arise and/or changes quickly.  The current system is pre-set with land line telephone numbers, yet many of us like myself are in and out of the home all day long. For me personally, I'd prefer hearing about an emergency via my cell phone.  By registering yourself you can also provide additional contact points including email addresses widening the layer of notification for one physical address. In addition as a business owner you can also register your place of business.

Although we know it's not always possible to have advance warning in the event of a disaster, the warning system can also provide detailed information like notices of shelters locations, assistance centers and/or public safety/health advisories.

This photo was taken of the flag in my front yard of my Brea home the day of the Freeway Complex fire through Corona, Chino Hills, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda and Brea. It was a scary situation for many. So take the time to register today, it's FREE!  Visit OC Alert now!

Being prepared for an emergency: Stock up on needed supplies that will add to your survival, comfort and safety during an earthquake or any type of emergency. As we all know, you/we can't depend on others, have enough supplies (including fresh water) for your family for a minimum of 72 hours!

15 Comments on Be Prepared ~ OC Alert Emergency Warning Registration

Our property was hit by twin tornadoes in 2001 with no advance warning.  The sirens went off after we came out to see what was left.  People need warnings and then they need to heed them.

Hi Kathleen ~ Oh my gosh, I can't even begin to imagine what that was like. This warning system calls everyone directly based on their land line phone number. Equally important is the fact that one can register others numbers, all would receive notification.

Hi Lynda, This is my first comment in the new year. I have been changing over to the Mac and it has taken a lot of time.

Your new alert system sounds similar to what we have here in the city of San Diego. It is certainly comforting to know that something like this is in place. Thankfully, people will take this seriously and it will also save lives. The fires in CA have been are getting more frequent and apear in more and more places. Here is hoping that the new system never has be used.

Happy New Year Lynda.

Lynda - great information for all to know. We have our land line in the system here in San Diego but need to check further to make sure all phones are included. The system worked well for the fires last year and hopefully will not be needed again for some time.

Lynda, I'm surprised that they are only asking for land line numbers. Since the majority of people have cell phones and many don't even have a land line.  Wonder if they plan on changing that anytime soon.

Hi Lynda, This is great.  Until a few years ago I lived near you - just off the Yorba Linda Blvd exit from the 57 - and I followed the news about those recent fires closely.  I knew people and places that were impacted.  I'm glad they are putting together a warning or alert system, as there is so much wind through that area that fires move rapidly.  Does this work like a reverse 911 that they have in some areas?

Remember also to get that emergency kit together -- canned food, water, blankets, change of clothes, filter masks, etc.

Lynda, what a great service for the county to offer it's residents.  It makes sense!  My wish for 2009 is that no one gets called.  Scary stuff.

Happy New Year!!

We have a similar system here but it took some effort for them to include cell phones. During the October 2007 fires it seemed to work extremely well.
