Disclosure: I understand the power of Web 2.0 and social networking over the Internet. I have a Facebook account, a Linked In account, I have a personal blog and I have a photo blog. I see the benefits of the Internet and how it has expanded friendships that wouldn't have been otherwise. In fact, Active Rain blogging has revolutionized my business in 2008.
All that being said, I am writing this post in response to Troy Erickson's recent Featured Post about Using the Internet to meet people face to face. With all due respect to Troy, I understand what he meant in his post, to use these social networking sites as stepping stones to meet people face to face. As a matter of fact, some of my new friendships that will last a lifetime are formed because of Active Rain. So, I understand the benefits.
But sometimes, as business owners, we think about business at every opportunity. Great, I say. But sometimes, I'm just want to wear a "Me" hat once a while, instead of talking about business, or looking for opportunities at every corner to connect with another lead or referral. Honestly, that's never how I want to look at anyone. And as a person, I hope that others don't look at me that way too. I don't want to imagine that there is a paycheck behind every possible friendship and connection I make. There is much more to relationship-building than just money, isn't there? There got to be.
I connect with the Collin County Rose Society members because I enjoy talking and growing roses. This is the only group I could talk to people who could have "rosy" talks all day long. Definitely not with my husband. I connect with the Collin County OU Alumni because I wanted to share and get to know people whose gone to the same school like I did and we could have a good time during watch parties during football season. I connect with the No More Debt online forum because financial freedom and getting out of debt are huge passions of mine.
Don't get me wrong. I think about how I can do better in my business ALL the time. But I don't make friendship connections and I don't go to church because I think that there are money to be made there. Sometimes, I just want to be your friend because I sincerely care about you as a person. In the end, it is your friendship that I'd be taking with me to Heaven in my treasure chest, not the commission paycheck or referral fees I have made because of our friendship/ relationship.
I just have to share this quote about Friends. Isn't it something?
