I decided it's time to share the story of how my real estate career helped to add another member to my family.
At the end of last summer, I was showing a house on 10 acres, that had 2 barns. And sitting beside one the barns was this beautiful cat. The house was vacant and empty except for a few cans of cat food! According to the listing agent, the seller's didn't really claim the cat to be theirs. They just fed it until they moved away.
Is it just me or does that sound absolutely ridiculous?
Anyway, I really didn't want another pet, since I already had 1 cat, 1 rabbit (another real estate addition) and 1 guinea pig. But my buyers had decided they didn't want this particular house. So, every couple of days, I went back and checked on him, fed him, and sat with him for a little while. It was actually a nice break for me, since the acreage was so peaceful and the neighbors baby calf would come up to the fence to say "hello". But I was still hoping someone would buy the house quickly, and the cat would just convey with the sale.
After a couple of weeks, the worst thing that could happen, happened. Fires broke out in the area where the cat was, so I had to go get him. Bear in mind, he was a little on the wild side. He always let me pet him, but wouldn't let me pick him up. Can someone say "Valium"? (Yes, I checked with the vet first.)
So I brought him home and locked him in my office overnight, to keep him away from my other kitty until I could have him checked. My other cat had an appointment for her annual checkup the next morning, so I just took the new kitty to my old kitty's appointment. The girls at the vet's office just chuckled and said I certainly wasn't the first Realtor(r) to show up with an unplanned addition to their family. That was news to me!
Whiskers has been with us for about 9 months now. After the 1st couple of weeks, he had gained a few pounds and his fur got so shiny and soft! He has become part of the family and is the sweetest thing ever. As time progresses, his charming personality comes out more and more. I consider him an unexpected gift and blessing from God.
