Real Estate Sellers Move Out and Abandon Their Cat

THE Daytona Beach Real Estate & Community Events blog. By Lisa C. Hill, "THE SMART CHOICE!"

I decided it's time to share the story of how my real estate career helped to add another member to my family.

Cat found in barnAt the end of last summer, I was showing a house on 10 acres, that had 2 barns. And sitting beside one the barns was this beautiful cat. The house was vacant and empty except for a few cans of cat food! According to the listing agent, the seller's didn't really claim the cat to be theirs. They just fed it until they moved away.

Is it just me or does that sound absolutely ridiculous?

Anyway, I really didn't want another pet, since I already had 1 cat, 1 rabbit (another real estate addition) and 1 guinea pig. But my buyers had decided they didn't want this particular house. So, every couple of days, I went back and checked on him, fed him, and sat with him for a little while. It was actually a nice break for me, since the acreage was so peaceful and the neighbors baby calf would come up to the fence to say "hello". But I was still hoping someone would buy the house quickly, and the cat would just convey with the sale.

After a couple of weeks, the worst thing that could happen, happened. Fires broke out in the area where the cat was, so I had to go get him. Bear in mind, he was a little on the wild side. He always let me pet him, but wouldn't let me pick him up. Can someone say "Valium"? (Yes, I checked with the vet first.)

So I brought him home and locked him in my office overnight, to keep him away from my other kitty until I could have him checked. My other cat had an appointment for her annual checkup the next morning, so I just took the new kitty to my old kitty's appointment. The girls at the vet's office just chuckled and said I certainly wasn't the first Realtor(r) to show up with an unplanned addition to their family. That was news to me!

Whiskers has been with us for about 9 months now. After the 1st couple of weeks, he had gained a few pounds and his fur got so shiny and soft! He has become part of the family and is the sweetest thing ever. As time progresses, his charming personality comes out more and more. I consider him an unexpected gift and blessing from God.Whiskers again

I have adopted a beautiful little cat.  She was abandoned by some people that moved away from NH.  It has taken her a while to show her true personality, but now she is a full member of our family.  Her name is Carley and she is the little princess!carley

Joan. Carley is beautiful. How long have you had her? Whiskers keeps showing more and more personality. I was afraid he'd reach a point where he would stop adapting, but thankfully he hasn't :)

Lisa-

Isn't it funny how that happens?  One day a beautiful cat showed up on my doorstep.  He was a black tiger stripe, and he hung around constantly.  I finally let him in, and named him "Smelly Cat".  He got his name because when my brother was over, the cat passed gas, and my brother named him so.  He was the SWEETEST cat in the world.  He would go outside sometimes, and one day he didn't come back.  I don't know if he was just onto the next house, or if something had happened, or he did have a home, but a few weeks later I found that he had left me a present.....

Henry and I

His name is Henry, and he is my baby boy.  Love him to death.

I can't count how many times I've been surprised with a new member of the family.   I just found a white kitten outside my house last week - he is now playing with my cats, and I have to name him...... any ideas???

Lisa:  What a beautiful story.  He looks much like a cat my sister rescued a few years ago.  We are still shaking our heads over that.  Her husband was not in to animals at ALL and this precious cat has totally softened his heart.  Since that time they have another minx that they rescued.  My sister called me in a fit because the cat's tale had been cut off.  Too funny, it was a minx that had been abandoned.  That one has become the cuddler of their two resuced cats.

LOL. She thought the tail was cut off.  And isn't it amazing how pets have a way of getting to men? My dad and husband are the same way, over and over again with the pets =)  Thanks for sharing.

What a great story, and a very happy ending.  We have a house full of animals (5 cats and 2 dogs), but none of them have come from listings or clients.  I'm not sure we can handle any more :)

Hi, Lisa! Whiskers is so adorable. What a great story! All of my cats (currently 3, but many, many past ones) have come to me in some strange way and with a great story. I think it's part of what really makes them part of the family!

Sylvia,  Great story and thank goodness for REALTORS like you.  It amazes me how many people leave their cats behind when they move.  I understand that with all of the foreclosures these days, the number of homeless pets has skyrocketed.  So sad.  Here is a picture of all my left behind kitties (that now call my house home).

Can you say, SUCKER!?

Have a great day, and thanks for sharing your story.

Sounds like Whisker's started life as a barn cat... Out in the country side there are 1000's of cats who live on farms and barns, do get feed, but their main job and meal is mousing. Lucky Whisker's that he got adopted and no longer has to work so hard for his food.

Georgina- Those pink feather used to be attached to a toy O.o

Amy- LOL. Definitely!

Mary- Actually, I don't think he was originally a barn cat. The giveaway is that he had already been neutered!
