The new GE Active Keys are convenient and small and you don't have to use a cradle and connect to your computer to synch, they update via radio. However, the radio's aren't Cell Phone on Charger by Mike Saundersvery efficient and will drag down the charge on the Active Key in a couple of days.

There are several solutions: 1) carry the Active Key in and place it on a home charger every day, 2) get a special car charger for your Active Key at a cost of over $20.00. 3) Use your existing cell phone automobile charger.

Yep, if you have a cell phone that charges via its USB port, you can use that same auto charger to keep your Active Key charge fresh. Whenever you are in your car and your charger is not plugged into your phone just go ahead and plug the charger into your Active Key. While you are traveling, your Active Key will be recharged and you will no longer be embarrassed to have your charge run out in the middle of showing multiple homes to your out of town buyers. And, if your vehicle has an accessory charging port that works even with the ignition off, your Active Key will be charging while you are in your office or at home. It will never have to leave your vehicle other than when you need it to access a lock box. Active Key on Charger by Mike Saunders

The pictures show both my phone and my Active Key connected, via USB port, to the same car charger that I picked up for $9.99 plus tax at Wal-Mart. I now only have one charging cord in my truck and both my phone and Active Key are charged at all times.

Great Idea, it is much cheaper to find the phone charger that will work than it is to buy the one from GE Supra.

We have the Active Keys from GE as well here in Portland. They are truly a poor device. I have had to have them replaced now 3 times in just a year.

Occassionaly they will lock up and not let you use them. The only solution is to call GE support. It takes about 5 to ten minutes for them to go through a series of tests and send you new codes that is supposed to fix the problem. But I have had to do it more than once.

In regards to the charging ( Active Keys ) do not hold a charge very well. I turn my device off after I use it. To do this you need follow these instructions.

  1. turn on device and wait till it is ready for you to use it
  2. press down on the on off button ( top right ) and hold for at least 7-15 seconds. A new notification will display in the window ( radio is turned off)

Now you can put it away and the battery will not discharge. The next time you turn it on it will tell you to push the number 1. After you have done this the radio will then update its self and you will be ready to use it.

The update only takes a couple of minutes. I generally do this when I am within 5 minutes of the first house that I am going to show.

Really poor system but it is what we have to work with for the time being.

Mel - it is much better than the old one we had

T&D - and I am all for saving money

Herb - yep, turning the radio off is one way to keep the charge longer, I wrote a post about that back in June or July. If you don't have a USB charger for your phone then that is the best way to make the charge last. I have found the keys to be very reliable except for the radio sucking down the charge.

We just got our MLS Active keys this month. I already don't like it. I wrote a post about my gripes so I won't reiterate, but mainly, Herb has it right. Needs some work. You can check out my suggestions at http://www.affinityproperties.com/wordpress/2009/10/24/i-dont-have-time-for-a-complicated-mls-key/
