Preliminary housing start figures for 2008 supplied by CMHC highlight comparisons between Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.

  • The Moncton CMA recorded a significant decline in December starts. The 49 unit decline in December was the main cause that total 2008 starts were 4% lower than 2007. In 2008 the Moncton CMA recorded 43% of the total starts for all urban centres in New Brunswick.

  • Total starts in the Saint John CMA were up a significant 47% over 2007 and accounted for 26% of all urban starts.

  • Total starts in the Fredericton CA were up 9.7% over 2007 and accounted for 22% of all urban starts.

  • Also of note is that Moncton multiple unit starts exceeded single unit starts while the reverse was true for Saint John and Fredericton.
