"If at first you don't succeed try, try again!"  This is one of my motto's for this year..and I admit....I lack discipline..or maybe self control...when it comes to Activerain..in truth..I figured out something about myself...I need an audience.......a guaranteed audience and I need to make money...and that's one of the many benefits Activerain has given me....

In the past I have tried to launch other sites for myself...

I pay for web hosting and sometimes wonder why?  My favorite platforms are the freebies..and the best part of these freebies...they are social platforms..with a built in audience..with built in SEO...and the best part writing posts are rarely in vain!

So I might not be the best twit according to articles I have read....

I jump on facebook..and have received business...Plaxo is the best investment that I have made so far, and I love E-cademy for all of my new International Friends.....made different contacts on myspace....and have finally officially launched Daytona Beach Real Estate once again! :)  and believe me there are many more...

Some Experts would say..I am breaking the rules...see I most often just post my links on twitter, I add friends on myspace... I'm lousy at keeping myself updated on what I am doing....and I don't reply to every comment on my posts. Some times I do not reciprocate..or I don't use these social networks the way so many experts suggest....

Am I breaking some rules of social networking?  Yes I am..and please don't take it personally!

Its not you...Its a matter of time and the people in front of me

I'm in front of people the majority of time.  As a matter of fact my schedule for 2009 is loaded and full and requires me to be in front of people every day and most of the day.

I had to put some systems in place otherwise I would never have a moment's peace to myself or even have the opportunity to make money this year.

No I won't quit posting on Activerain..its to valuable too my business and the connections I have made...priceless...

No I won't stop posting my links on Twitter and responding to direct messages or even @REPLIES..

That is exactly how many of posts are found!

People question me where's your outside blog?..they are slowly coming together.....you might think I'm a slow start...I am.. and just about everything that I do... I got a method to my madness..even if experts do not agree!

It works best for me...and the time allocated for my online marketing and socializing!

How about you?  Do you sometimes break the rules of social networking?  According to many of the experts...I sure do!

"Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. Buddha

Someone gave me a good analogy that Facebook is like having an ongoing cocktail party.....without the cocktails (maybe).  So how would you act at a cocktail party?  What would you say.....?  What would you not say?  It is just a good means to keep you in check for not saying something you shouldn't either on AR or Facebook or wherever..........

... I have always wondered about how you and others find so much time to post such valuable stuff !! I actually have a post in mind myself to inquire about it :o)

I dont necessarily think you are breaking the rules though, to me it's just that you are using the outlets that suit you most, and using them in a way that fits your goals.... nuttin wrong with that to me !

Hi Midori, I always thought rules were made to be broken. Who cares about rules? I would just do what you can and care about what works for you.

In another couple of weeks there will be another Social Netwrk that emerges and I guess we will be expected to work with that site too. LOL

I love Monika' soutside blog as it works for us. AR is awesome because this is where we learned a lot and have made some great connections like yourself.

Midori - I thought there were not any rules to social networking ?  : )  That is the best part - what works for one is the right way !  We think you rock so maybe you are making the rules !  Like you, we are super busy and do our best to keep up to date with the sites.  Our main goal is to increase our presence in the local area and cannot possiblly stay up to date with the sites, but like you, we are slowly working on it... learning and making the rules as we go along !  Lets make the rules together !  ~ Chris

Hey Midori - I break the rules, too, and I grew up thinking all rules were made to be broken, or at least that's what my mom always told me I acted like.  ;-)

Anyway, do what works for you and have fun doing it!

Experts is a broad term...and I think in most instances...the experts write generally in most cases...however...I wish all I did was blogging...social networking all day everyday but that is not the case..in between we have to include buyers and sellers...and in my case..REALTORS as well...

In truth and in real estate it should be the other way around...I see most like breaking the rules...I'm there with you...because if it doesn't work what I am doing...I guess I gotta break the rules...to make it work!

Thanks everyone for commenting and see you on your posts.

Hi Midori - I wouldn't really say you're breaking the rules ... but you may not be using social networking to its fullest capacity. Putting links on Twitter is a great way to drive traffic to your blog, but including a few tweets along the way will help you build followers who will become subscribers to your blog (and maybe even refer you to others). I know you've got a lot of great things to say -- so I'll look for your tweets!

Hi John-I like twitter..but I prefer facebook...and AR over something else I think it really boils down to preference and whatever you prefer..use that social network to the fullest.  I do tweet from time to time..but when I am in front of people..I don't because I noticed I pay more attention to the screen vs. the person in front of me!

It strikes me as funny that we have to have all these rules about social networking, when we've all been 'socializing' for thousands of years. Social networking is what you want it to be, not what some self-appointed expert tells you it should be. Common sense and courtesy should be the only rules.

Hi Midori!  Congrats on that little gold star!  In my opinion, there ARE no rules to this social networking thing--and you, my dear, are certainly doing the right thing--doing it YOUR way!  If that works best for you, and obviously it is, then don't change a thing!  I think we all go through the trials of a new online service/social network, only to find that it's done nothing for our business.  Taking it slow IS the smart thing to do and I admire your discipline!

Midori - I'm not sure there are a lot of rule to even worry about. Yes, there is plenty of advice, but things continue to evolve and, so why not explore all the options and go with what is working. I know I don't have the time I would like to spend, which means I don't always respond to all comments, or interact with every poke, thrown sheep, or other request on Facebook. I suspect many are in the same boat and understand. It's hard enough keeping up with all I haev to do, versus everything I would like to do. An on-going challenge.

Good observations!  I too like all the free stuff as much as possible!  And Active Rain has brought me the most referrals of them all!

Due to time, I limit myself to sites like FaceBook - I haven't event ventured into Twitter yet.  One day maybe - but for now - I try to keep up here in Active Rain and on Facebook.

I agree with keeping a professional face throughout the social networking sites.  I have pulled back from any "persona" items.  For example, on Facebook, while I expose some of my personal life through pictures and comments - I always keep in mind that potential clients are also trying to find me there.   So I better avoid joining up with virtual gaming and snowball fights.  As harmless as they are for the social side....I try not to go too far down the professional scale.   So I may not have as much "fun"....but I'll leave that to the real world social gatherings!

Great post!

Midori, congrats on your gold star =)

I paid good money to hear a well-known real estate trainer help us out with tips on a software program.  While there I had the opportunity to ask about Plaxo and what he thought of it.  He frowned upon it's use as he felt people did not want to be "bothered" by these emails asking for data updates.  Because of his response, I never gave Plaxo a chance.  This was 2 years ago and just recently I was rethinking my stance.  I realized he's a ninny and probably is stuck in the marketing methods of decades ago and hasn't caught how viral web 2.0 marketing can be.  I'm giving Plaxo another look.  Thanks =)

Hi Midori,

I'm so glad to hear that you are streamlining your online life. You were making me feel inadequate and I wondered how I was supposed to find time to work with clients! The decision to blog or not to blog, and then if to blog where to blog is getting in the way of providing good information. It reminds me of the time we used to think that a business should have one web site. Then it became a good idea to have multiple web sites to expand your reach. Then we started with one blog or just Active Rain and before we knew it we had a blogroll too long for our template.

So, are you now saying we should blog in just one place and then link like mad or like a Twit? Just attempting a joke.
