If you are active military and have thought about continuing your education, the opportunity to do so as an Books- Military Free Tuitionactive serviceman or woman is incredible indeed.  The U.S Armed Forces offer several programs to assist members with their education.

Perhaps the most popular program is known as TA (Armed Forces Tuition Assistance). It is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Congress has granted each service the ability to pay up to 100% for the tuition expenses of its members.

Each branch of the Armed Forces has its own guidelines.

A brief overview of the requirements for Marines

Who is Eligible?

  • Active Duty Only

What is Covered?

  • Tuition
  • Lab Fees
  • Enrollment fees
  • Special Fees
  • Computer Fees

Amount Covered?

100 % Tuition Not to exceed

  • $250 per Semester Credit Hour
  • $166 per Quarter Credit Hour
  • $4500 per Fiscal Year

TA (Tuition Assistance) is not a loan and is viewed as money earned, the same as base pay.

My husband is former Army and paid for part of his education with the GI Bill.  I'm really happy that congress passed this, but I still think it should pay for education after their service is over, not just active duty.

My son is currently attending college on his GI Bill as well. He also participated in something when he was in the service so he receives a higher monthly payment. I agree with Tammy that vets should be taken care of more as well. He has medical through VA but it's awful if you go to the emergency room ....

Both my children and myself were able to use the Survivor and Dependents Educational Assistance Program another tuition benefit program.   I used the program to get an MBA and my children used theirs towards undergraduate degrees.  It certainly helped, especially with my kids tuition!

Hi Tammy,
I know there are several different types of educational programs available to active duty as well as veterans.  I agree that all need to be able to participate in these programs.  Thanks.

Sally,
I keep hearing that the medical care for VA is substandard and that breaks my heart!  These people that fought to protect us need the very best medical care available!

Cynthia  My husband earned his BS on the GI Bill.  We are pleased to have these benefits in effect for the military - anything we can do to support them for their service to us is a sign of gratitude,  Karen

Hello Cindy,
I'm sure it did.  Many people have benefited from the military education programs.  I say let's keep it going.

Don,
I love hearing from all of you who have used these programs or have children who have!   Good for your son. Thanks.

Hi Karen,
Yes, yes--I agree with you.  Supporting our military in as many ways as possible is very important!  Thank you.
