"We want to get off oil," Hawaii energy official Ted Peck said when discussing the state's new partnership with Better Place LLC, which will lay the groundwork for large-scale electric car use by 2012. The California company will install thousands of auto charging stations throughout Hawaii this year. Better Place will also swap old car batteries for fresh ones for a small predetermined fee.
As explained on Better Place/Hawaii, "The state's partnership with Better Place will play a significant role in the economic growth of Hawaii and will serve as a model for the rest of the U.S. for how green technology infrastructure can fuel job creation. The implementation of electric infrastructure will reignite the Hawaii economy with local jobs, while creating a model for renewable energy growth. It will also expose the millions of annual visitors to Hawaii to the real possibilities of life with clean energy and renewable fuel."
Better Place already has agreements with Nissan, the countries of Denmark, Israel, and Australia, and with California. They are developing the Rogue, an electric car, shown here in Hawaii.

In her commitment to environmental leadership, Governor Linda Lingle also recently initiated the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, a renewable energy plan designed to encourage the growth of green technology infrastructure.
Here is the "Hawaii Deployment Map" of stations - there will be one in East Oahu.

It's exciting to be on the cutting edge of green technology and new innovations for job growth and job creation, both in Hawaii and nationwide.
