I have been writing posts this morning on the loss of a local newspaper, and what that may mean to all of us. From the comments I received I noted that they all seem to have the same general opinion. They won't really miss the biased reporting. They like the crosswords and other fun aspects of the local papers in their area, but they find the "Facts" the papers produce to be unreliable and biased to say the least.

This is unfortunate, but I have to agree with them.

So if we are seeing the media as unreliable and biased, do you think it effects the marketing we do in those publications? When we advertise in this form of media, do we loose our credibility, and get lumped in with the reports that we all are claiming to not be an accurate representation of the housing market?

How do you select where you advertise?

I really don't think that it affects our marketing and we do not lose our credibility.

Dinah, Biased reporting is in the eye of the beholder.  Normally, if you don't agree with the slant of the article, writer or the paper you feel it's biased.  When you agree with what they say it becomes 'fair and balanced'.  Just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

no loss for me. local newspapers rely way too much on AP wire stories to fill out their paper. Their real estaste section is filled with statistics from other cities. When will they learn that what happens in Miami has nothing to do with what happens in Kansas City.

Dinah, I stopped newspaper advertising altogether. In fact, I stopped reading the newspaper!  I find myself no longer affected by the perceived negativity that seems to be selling the "news".  Not advertising has not had a negative effect on my business and not reading it anymore has been a rather "freeing" experience.

I don't advertise in the newspaper.  Most of my advertising is on the internet.  Buyers and sellers start on the internet today.

I stopped advertising in the newspaper and print media 2 years ago. The Internet is where it's at now. The good news.....the more newspapers that go under (sad I know) the less trees used.

I stopped advertising in the newspaper too. I also don't read the real estate section anymore because it makes me so mad. The people that they seem to interview in my area have NO idea what they are talking about half the time. I wonder if readers take those opinions as fact?

Its been 5 years since I have spent on newspaper ads. If you do not get a return then people will not use them Other venues will open up. Here we have a number of local publications that are niche weeklys that have blogs and sites that have daily updates.

This is going to segment media much like cable TV has done to the newwork stations over the years. New Ideas replace the old. Much like we should do with the Detroit auto companies. Anyone buying that bailout. Get ready Part 2 and so on.

"The media" is a really broad term. Some of them I trust, some I don't. AS far as newspapers go- in my small town we have a local paper which comes out twice a week, with mostly local news. We advertise in every Friday paper in it.

I agree with the comments above. For the most part print advertising in my area is proven to assist with open house attendance & the occasional floor duty call. But the internet and MLS system are the keys to selling a home. The publication obviously did not have a good reader base or steady advertising income, which is why it's not still around. I think initially it might be noticed but give it a couple months and many people won't remember there was one.

Being in a small town we have a local weekly paper that fortunately reports mostly local news. But even in our small town we get a lot better response from our internet websites and homes catalogs for buying and selling real estate. We find it's a better source for image ads and recognition.

You have to pay close attention to what works and what dosn't. That is how you will know.
