Fun Things to Do in Southern Colorado!

The last weekend in April was a fantastic weekend for Southern Colorado!  Temperatures were just right, the wind wasn't blowing, and there wasn't any snow or tornados (all of which we have had our fair share of the last couple weeks)!

Sunday I spent the entire day at the Pike Peaks North Slope Recreation Area and North Catamount Reservoir.  The drive getting up there is gorgeous going through the mountains west of Manitou Springs, you pass several Colorado Springs and area landmarks on your way out Highway 24.  Here are links to some of those locations:

Van Briggle Pottery Studio - American Art Pottery since 1899

Manitou Cliff Dwellings - Authentic Anasazi Cliff Dwellings built more than 700 years ago

Cave of The Winds - An underground cave

Pikes Peak - Americas' Highway - Highway to the top of Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak Cog Railway - year round Cog Rail train to the top of Pikes Peak

North Catamount Reservoir 4/29/07

The picture to the left I took with my digital camera while enjoying the North Catamount Reservoir Sunday afternoon.  There are three pristine water reservoirs located at approximately 9500 feet.  There is North Catamount, South Catamount and Crystal Creek Reservoir.  The reservoirs are 210, 120, and 136 water surface acres respectively.

Each reservoir has between 3-7 miles of shoreline, there are no boat ramps and only people or electric motor powerd boats are permitted.  If you are there to fish PLEASE READ THE REGULATIONS, North Catamount Reservoir is restricted to artificial flys and lures only!  The rangers do pay attention and they will not only fine you $75 per fish if you are caught fishing with bait they will also make you put the fish back if they are still living.

Fishing and a day out at the lake with the family are probably the favorite passtimes here but there are also extensive hiking and biking trails available, of course at this elevation be aware of your surroundings you could find anything from bears to squirrels.  Fantastic weather, crystal clear water, lots of fish, nature at her best!

Each lake has it's unique characteristice as far as size and shape, right now there was still some snow in places, mostly the shady spots, and you should prepare for differing weather patterns as this high mountain area North Slope Rec Areaweather can change drastically in a short period of time - by 3:00 on this day there were clouds in the sky and it was threatening rain.

If you love nature and the outdoors I would highly recommend visiting this beautiful area, the views are spectacular and if you are of a mind to you can go on up the mountain to Pikes Peak.

Entry fees if you are only going to fish is $4 per person up to $25 per car max, if you are intending to go up to the peak it's $10 per adult $5 per child up to $35 per car max.  Go to their website and you can download a discount coupon and be sure to read the section "Tips for your Trip" on the general information page.

Enjoy and have a wonderful Spring & Summer in Southern Colorado!

Patricia-  Incredible pictures! When you said something earlier about this reservoir, I was racking my brain trying to remember where this was.  After this article, I remember, but it's been years since I've been up there! Good article.
