New Year - 2009

The beginning of each year we look at what we've been doing - what's working and not working and focusing on what we're going to continue doing and what we're going to do differently to make this year better.

Do you only wait for a new year to make things happen? Is now the time to take action?

As an entrepreneur, like many of you, this is not the case for me.  Why?  Because I change things anytime I'm presented with a new opportunity, challenge, setback or idea that I think I can make work.  I don't wait for the new year and I don't wait for things to fall apart completely before I realize I need to make changes - I make changes daily, weekly and monthly to keep my business moving in the right direction.

"Personal action is your pathway to success,
even if it is a little bit at a time!"
Catherine Pulsifer, from Do A Little

RIGHT NOW is the time to create and seize opportunities, try new things, change things up, get out of our comfort zone, and solve problems.

Here are 3 simple areas to focus on for an entrepreneur to put the right focus on their business and achieve great success:

1.      Surround yourself with positive people.

Surround yourself with positive peopleYou attract positive people to you by thinking positively - seeing opportunity in every situation and being happy not only for your own success but the success of those you are around.  You've heard it before I'm sure "Smiles are contagious."  Smiles are a clear pathway for showing people you are approachable.  Think about when you're walking down the street and you smile at somehow, it prompts that person to smile back (generally) and who knows you might have just have had a positive impact on that person.

Speaking positively attracts positive people towards you.  Be a person that has something positive to say even if you're having a tough day - who wants to be around someone that steals our energy away?  This doesn't mean that you can't confide in a special friend when things aren't going right but it does Positive Wordsmean that you should focus on not wearing these emotions on your face and spreading negativity through your words.  Stay focused and upbeat!

Some great words to make part of your every day interactions that are powerful ways to show you're a positive person:

I'm sorry I believe in you • I'm proud of you •  Thank you •  Perhaps

"Use the word PERHAPS to change
your negative beliefs to possibilities that invite ACTION and,
ultimately, to positive beliefs and probabilities."
Anita Foley, from The Power of "PERHAPS"

Birds of a feather stick together

Ever hear the saying - "Birds of a feather flock together."  This phrase is a reminder to associate with like minded people.  Set boundaries - distance yourself from negative people and end those toxic relationships that can only take away from your success.

2. Seek out mentors.Seek out mentors

Most of us have spent over 20 years or more going to school and having mentors (teachers and advisors) to guide us in our school career and path.  Why then do we think we no longer need someone to guide us and keep us on the right path?  My advice: Don't go it alone, find a trusted colleague, someone you admire or seek out assistance from an experienced free mentor through SCORE, an amazing resource for entrepreneurs.

Search for niche opportunities

3. Search for niche opportunities.

The key is determining what you know and what you love.  In my example, I provide virtual marketing assistance and sure I could offer a wider variety of services, but for me I decided my niche would be real estate - I know the business and I love it!

Always be thinking about what services and products you offer your clients.  Can you build on them? Customize them?  Research what services your clients are looking for and incorporate them into your business if it makes sense and it's an area that you can share your expertise.

Think about all your interactions here on ActiveRain - with colleagues who are positive, like minded and supportive, teachers/mentors who can share their experiences, challenges and offer you great advice and people you can associate with to build niche opportunties that will benefit you both.

Make the most of this amazing networking opportunity that you have right in front of you.

Ann Marie: great post.  A good reminder for all of us.  I am taking the quote from Pulsifer and putting it on my desk.  I tend to think I have to do something big or not at all. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wondeful post - It is no great suprise that new year's resolutions are regularly discarded by the end of January.  Goals are a great starting point.  However, they are virtually meaningless if you don't take action and it starts by having a good plan with clearly delineated tasks and milestone goals to measure your success.  As a small business owner (and I don't know any agent who is not a small business owner), we need to surround ourselves with positive people willing to seek assistance and learn the business.  We need to be willing to take risks, pursue new ideas, and invest the time and effort necessary to succeed.  Developing niche and capitalizing opportunities may mean the difference between success and failure in this business.  To say you want 2 sales per month is a worthy goal.  However, if you don't have a plan as to how you are going to generate leads than the goal isn't worth much.

John - thank you and here's hoping you have your best year ever too.

Diana - thank you and I love that quote too - I have learned that sometimes the small little things that I'm doing will get me closer to my goal - I can't accomplish everything all at once and this quote is a great reminder of that.

Ryan - thank you :)  It's funny I just knew you would react to the word ACTION - isn't that funny? LOL  So true my friend - we can have all the goals and good intentions but if we don't act they are scribbles on paper.  Surrounding yourself with liked minded, positive people is also in my opinion a great way to move your business forward.

Evelyn - so happy you did and I hope you find the words helpful and inspiring.

I am predictable.  I did have a strong reaction to "action."  I truly hate lofty goals which are no more than empty statements.  I hate those rosy predictions.  I would rather hear an honest and realistic assessment with small goals.  I love people who take initiative, take charge of the situation and get the job done.  I have seen too many people who went into to business, had good goals, and who were well-qualified, smart and hard workers - but they failed because they didn't have a plan, didn't adjust their plan, and never quite got the hang of taking action.

I agree about surrounding yourself with positive and like minded people.  My business partner and I may not agree on every issue but we are always on the same page.  We review and discuss the issue, develop an approach and then implement it.  We have very different personalities and styles but at the same time she has a wonderful, positive attitude, a great work ethic, and when she commits to something it is done.  When you have surround yourself with positive people, those hard "tasks" don't seem so hard.

Anne Marie,

Thank you for this inspiring post! I agree with all of your points here; especially that if you see something not working in your business, change it TODAY!--Don't wait until next month or even next year to create a new plan. Also, I think it's very true that we should surround ourselves with positive people, ones that can encourage us and motivate us to do better...and we need to be that type of person to others in our lives as well. A negative person can really just suck the life out of a room and crush dreams in an instant, can't they?!

I'm very glad to be a part of Active Rain, where I'm not only making friends, but learning everday about the real estate business and life in general from other's successes and mistakes.

I hope you have a very blessed 2009!

Anne: such valuable information, thank you. I particularly know that what you think is huge. We can't always control the first thought that popsinto our heads, but we can direct the second and that action can make the difference.

Ryan, I ALWAYS love reading your comments - they are so real and truthful and full of heart.  It's quite obvious to me that we are very like minded in our approaches and I look forward to the opportunity to working together at some point this year - I would consider it an honor.  Keep up the great work and attitude - it's contagious.

Anne - your comments truly capture the message I was trying to convey and I'm so happy to meet someone with like minded thinking.  I too am so happy to be a part of AR and have learned so much from all my exchanges.  I really enjoyed your post on adding the text message widgit - great job- I bookmarked and will be doing myself - thank you.  Hope to see you again on my blog and certainly to connect more on Twitter to get to know you more.  I hope your have a very blessed 2009 too - GBU.

Janice - thank you and your words are so true- it's hard to control every thought and word but to be mindful of them and how they may affect others whether positively or negativity is key to building relationships and our businesses.  Great thinking!

I agree completely with your advice! Attitude is such a big part of life and business. Stay away from the rotten apples! My niche that I have carved out for myself is equestrian property. All of my life I have been involved with showing horses so when my neighbor, friend and broker sold me on real estate I decided to focus on what and who I know best. I also loved that comment about everything you touch turning to SOLD! I'm going to remember that! -S
