2007 Outstanding Volunteers awarded Honorees recognized at first Mayor's Ball The City of Johns Creek was built on the foundation of a solid base of hundreds of volunteers, many of whom have quietly given their time and talents to the community for many years. Choosing just six of those volunteers to honor was a challenge, but one the Johns Creek Foundation - a non-profit community volunteer effort to support the City's not-for-profit organizations - gladly met. The 2007 Outstanding Volunteer Awards were given Saturday evening, April 28 to Neal Freeman (Cultural & Visual Arts), Nancy Bivens (Natural & Cultural Preservation), Hank Wiley (Youth Recreation), Kathy Theisen (Education), Margaret Krueger (Lifetime Achievement) and Rep. Mark Burkhalter (Public Service and Leadership) at the first Mayor's Ball. Freeman is the founder of the Ocee Arts Center. Bivens is a Past President and Board Member of the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve. Wiley is Past President and Board Member of the Ocee Park Athletic Association. Theisen is the Local School Advisor Co-chair, Chattahoochee High School. Rep. Burkhalter, Speaker Pro Tempore of the Georgia House of Representatives, introduced legislation 1321 which allowed the voter referendum for the creation of the City of Johns Creek. Krueger is a founding member of the Johns Creek Community Association and of the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center. "This evening was really about those people that came before the movement toward cityhood," said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker. "If it had not been for these individuals and their vision, and the determination to see things through, we would certainly not be where we are today. These people gave us something worth fighting for." The sold-out benefit was held in the ballroom of the Atlanta Athletic Club and raised money for Johns Creek's Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center and the Ocee Arts Center. KGST-AM radio host and Johns Creek resident Denny Shaffer was M.C. and chairperson of the event was Aileen Bodker, first lady of the City. |
