Hanging Art by Louise Henry, Pair Home Design www.pairhomedesign.com
I find that most people have some nice art work and pictures however they are dispersed singularly all over the home. I've discovered that art & pictures look best when they are grouped together and displayed as a feature wall. The idea behind good art placement is to hang pieces suitable to height and width of wall & display color and themes that are cohesive to create balance and flow into each room of your home; this can be achieved by following a few simple steps. Think of Art as another accessory in your home such as pillows & objects.
One large painting makes a statement and keeps things simple. It can also call attention to the focal point of the room which maybe a fireplace or architectural feature.
Getting Started
1. Remove all your pictures & art from walls and sort them on the floor in groups, such as:
Similar or matching frames
Scenic themes
Similar color themes.
2. Each group can be thought as "one unit" you can work combinations of pictures to find groupings that work together by creating a Rectangle shape Or Square shape for your feature wall. When your laying pictures on the floor try and keep the heavier pieces on the bottom and smaller pieces on the top. Line up the bottoms of the frames or place the smaller picture in the centre of the larger picture. Diagonal shapes can look nice in a stairway.
3. Choose smaller pictures for narrow walls 1 inch apart and larger pictures for big wall spaces 2 inches apart a hallway can be accented by hanging a set of six prints in a tall vertical arrangement, Hallways are a nice place to display family photos. In general, artwork should be hung so that the center point of the picture or grouping is at about eye level for the average person. While this won't be possible in every situation, it's a good guideline to keep in mind.
When you are hanging art over an object the general rule is that the picture or groupings of pictures are hung between 4 -10 inches above & should be no wider than 80% of the i.e. fireplace, sofa or table.
Look for pictures that inspire you, you may have been on a fabulous & memorable holiday to France or some other country, why not spend money on a suitable frame & matting & make a feature wall in a room where the colors & setting compliment one another.
Safety Tips: Ensure picture hooks are rated for the weight of the artwork or object. If in doubt about picture hardware or its installation, ask advice at your local framing hardware store.
Tools to use: laser, hanging leveler with magnet, sticky tack (like playdoo) hooks of various size, one inch nails, hammer, pencil, extra picture wire, sticky tack & Mr. Clean magic eraser for removing pencil marks, use this eraser gently as not to damage paint on walls.
