Recycle, ReUse, Reduce! Granbery Elementary setting a good example for our Youth!!

By

In the past few years I have become more and more conscious of the amount of garbage we produce at our house. We have recycled for years even though there is no curb side pickup in our neighborhood. This usually means that the "stuff" rides around in my trunk until I can go by one of the recycling centers.

Last year, while recycling at Granbery Elementary on a Saturday morning, I had the chance to talk to Sherry. She started the Granbery Recycling program in 1986 as a way to teach the kids about the earth and what we put into it. Not only has this been a great teaching tool, the money raised goes back to the school.

Up until last year, when Metro opened a 24 hour/7 day a week recycling center in the parking lot at the WalMart Market at Nippers' Corner, they raised close to $10,000 annually. The numbers are down considerably! This was enough information to cause me to go ONLY to Granbery to do my recycling!

But, then I had to arrange my schedule to do it on Saturday mornings. No longer. Now the recycle receptacles are there all day Friday and every Saturday morning until Noon. The best part about going on Saturday is that there are usually several students of Granbery there to help unload your car!

I feel very passionate about this program and would hate to see us loose this wonderful fundraiser for our local school and the opportunity to teach these children that finding a way to reuse, reduce or recycle is very important to our environment!

I wonder if kids still do newspaper drives like I did when I was a kid?  Do enough people still read the newspaper?  It makes sense to recycle and how great to help your local school at the same time.

I read the newspaper EVERY day. I'm not ready to get all my news electronically. Here they collect phone books now to recycle. I guess that helps too.

Connie - I did not know that Granberry had a recycling program.  Very good school and community.  Thanks for the information.

Denise - I try to tell everyone that buys from me in the Nippers' Corner area about it. I'd just like to see more people recycle!

Bill - me too! We don't have children, so it's not like I'm trying to save the world for them. I just think it's irresponsible to continue making the amount of garbage we make!

Kathleen - That's what I like so much about this program. It's actually teaching good habits to these kids.

My 91 year old father has recycling at Granbery since my daughter and nephew were in school there, many moons ago. They are now 25 and 26.

Kudos to Sherry Force, super dedicated organizer of this wonderful program, and to my dear daddy.

Donna - couldn't agree with you more! We're moving to an area that has "recycling" but they don't take plastics, glass, or cans. Go figure. I'll still be going to Granbery! :)
