A lot of you know that I just spoke at Inman News Real Estate Connect in New York and I have to tell you that it was an amazing experience.  After the presentation, a lot of people approached me and thanked me for inspiring them to do things differently and to go above and beyond and not settle for average.

Because I was asked to share the presentation, I decided to write about it at Agent Genius (that's where you will find the original post), and share it here at Active Rain.  The whole concept of New Media is that you can take a small idea and make it great.  There are no rules when it comes to Internet Marketing and the more creative and open you are, the better.  As long as you are genuine and have no hidden agenda, there are no boundaries.

Official Launch

The first thing I will share with you is that you must complement, link and find a balance between your online and offline marketing efforts.  I’m not just talking about the obvious, like including your blog and social media efforts in all your print advertising (a lot of us have done away with the majority of print due to the high costs and weak results).  I’m talking about doing an official launch of your efforts, your blog and your brand.

You can achieve this with a press release (both online and offline).  We had a professionally written press release done when we launched Miamism.com and sent it not only to the local media (small and large publications, news channels, magazines, etc), but also to PRWeb where it was picked up by a lot of different sources.

We’ve also found that press releases are helpful when you change something in your marketing, whether it’s a fresh new look to your blog, announcing a new team member or even an upcoming speaking engagement.  It’s official, local media channels are now looking to local bloggers for content.

Expect good and bad press….it’s part of the equation - but always remember that the way you react to that press will set you apart from your competition.

Identify your sphere of influence offline &

reward them using your online influence

When you go to Realtor School (for the record….i am not trivializing this, although I should), the first thing they teach you is to hit your sphere of influence.   In my opinion there are good ways and bad ways of doing this.  You can choose to just mail them hand written cards from here to eternity, you can call them and remind them what a wonderful Realtor you are, or you can be different.

So why not use your online influence to help others?  We started with restaurant reviews of places where we know the owners and they take time to engage us (very similar to the way we do business).  We took photos of with the owners, made fun posts and later asked them to include simple window clings with our website somewhere in the entrance to their establishment.

We are also constantly looking around to see who can benefit from our online presence - our pediatrician, a new local business, local photographer…..you name it.  We help them and expect nothing in return.

New Media gives you the power to connect with your community at many different levels and in the words of Benn Rosales (who I thank for letting me attempt to fill his shoes at Inman) -

By using social media we are able to create what we call “the bowl” - we’re able to actively help others, and in return, they very often pay it forward.

….stay tuned for taking your brand to the next level

Hi Ines,

I enjoyed your presentation in Orlando at NAR.  I will for sure take in the Inman conference next year.  I am hearing great things about it.  I'm not sure how many Canadians went.  Media networking and Web 2.0 seems to be a little slow developing here which is fine with me.  It is giving me time to forge ahead and continue to learn.  Way too many new words, actually, lol.  Keep up the good work.

Inez, I am amazed at the progress you have made!! Great ideas about rewarding the people you know and the businesses they are in. Kind of like paying it forward and it all comes back. Blogging and social media has given us a tremendous opportunity that was unheard of before.  I just did an online press release of my new brokerage. I suppose I should do an offline one also...Just not as much fun.  Anyway, keep up the great advice. We can all benefit from it.

Ines, I am so sorry I did not get to go to the Big Apple and see you at Inman.  Thanks so much for posting about it here.

Great tips.  I somehow got sidetracked and almost stopped blogging.  My balance was off and I let it get that way.  Thanks for the reminder.

Hey Ines - you really have soared since our beginning days here on AR!  We can proudly say we knew ya when.....

I've read your restaurant and local businesses reviews, and thought those were always a great idea.  I need to do some of that for my area.  I did a little bit, and then got off of it for some reason.  You are one I look to for inspiration, and I thank you for that, and for your friendship!

You ROCK, mi amiga!

Awww George - it all happened very last minute, the presentation was pretty impromptu - would have loved to meet you too!

Heather - creating a hyper-local blog that you have complete and total control over it makes a HUGE difference, good luck with it.

Jenny - I was really surprised at the amount of Canadians in both NAR and Inman this year - there was one particular session where the moderator asked how many people in the audience were from Canada and over 1/2 the room raised their hands.  You won't regret it.....and based on the fact that not many are doing it, will give you an edge.

Karen - thank you!!  it's all about keeping it real and paying it forward, no?

Maggie - it's never easy, but you know I love your blog and I love you - we just have to keep watching each other's backs :)

Ann - never forget "the ladies of the rain" - although I know the  title has been passed on....we can always say we were the original, no?  The content is always about balance.....never forgetting real estate :)

Jeff - that really means a lot coming from you - thank you!

Missy - we do eat out a lot! LOL (I was bummed you didn't make it, but at least got to hug Christa....flu and all)

Thank you Ronnie - wait 'till you hear what came next - all great ideas to achieve that balance

Marilyn - LMAO!! that session was so much fun....nice to see everyone in action

Colleen - you will have a blast - our first Tweet-up was amazing and it's definitely a way to connect with locals and make it real - enjoy!

Ines...  that's excellent, about taking your online presence offline. I like the concept and it makes a lot of sense. I love the restaruant reviews and such. That's thinking outside the box.  I was always wondering how a loan officer can do this, but you have given me some ideas.

Another thing, referring to online vs offline, ... when I went to the Google party in NYC, a realtor walked up to me and said, "oh my god, it's the FHA Expert."... now, I blushed a little, because I didn't know who she was, but she recognized me. It;s amazing what online marketing can do for you and in regards to how you took it to the next level. PS>.. hopefully we'll meet next time. I am bummed about that...

Ines, you were great at NAR in Orlando, so I'm sorry to have missed the Inman Connect and the chance to hear you speak again. I only wish I had listened to my broker when he told me about this place called ActiveRain in 2006...I could be one of the oldies instead of a middling newbie :) Nevertheless, better late than not at all. Kris - and it's only the beginning, there's more to come!

Sharon - better late than never, that's for sure - you are still ahead of the game.  What I did for the restaurants is the window clings.  Once the owners started hearing from customers that they found the restaurant via our blog, it was easy to ask them to include the cling on their store-front.

Vickie - if you ever get a chance to do some F2F in any of the conventions, do it! it's so worth it.  I'll be at ReTechSouth in March (Atlanta).

Diane - it was very exciting - would do it again in a heart beat!  TY!

Huiting - I have to tell you that at first, it was all about Google Juice and people finding the blog - then you realize that there is so much more you can do, especially when you achieve a certain level of respect.

Cindy - LOL - Five restaurants should be a piece of cake! :)

Gayle - glad to be of help - any other questions, just shoot them my way.

Jacque - i've tried for locals to guest blog on my site and have not had much luck with it - but have not given up.  The picture with the owners was to give BIG METROPOLITAN MIAMI a "small town feel", so you totally got the concept.

Suzanne - thank YOU!

John - the topic was "using offline efforts to support online endeavors" - the FB photos with the mojitos was a fun session at REBarCamp organized by Andy Kaufman.  You totally get the "social media capital" thing and you are my official birthday reminder/organizer! You Rock!

Ines - This is great advice and doing this has worked well for me.  The willingness to feature the business of others on-line can be beneficial.  For instant, in my town a winter market was implement this season, and I blogged about it then sent the link out to my SOI. The market has been a success and I had many lovely comments about the pictures I posted.  I also have several  other business to feature as a result of this and more people were introduced to my service and blog.  Being in tune with your community is one of the best thing to do.

Heather - goals are good, just make sure they don't seem too automatic with your approach to businesses - remember it's about THEM and you'll do awesome.

Jeff - good for you, you are taking it a step further and doing what the others are not - I'm just so bored of the mortgage broker newsletters in my inbox....good luck!

Jason - thank you for the complements - there's more to come with some small ideas that have turned into big ones. :)

Mindy and Jay - it's important to keep a balance of content as well on your blog.  If you don't write about real estate, then those actually looking to buy or sell may not find you - balance with everything is key.

Connie - ty!  we also have magnets for cars (did them for family and friends) and you have no idea how many people ask us for them - it's pretty amazing

Rick & Inez,

It has been a while since I stopped by for a cyber-visit and view two smiling faces.  Smiling faces can help perk up ones day!

You convey a great message in reminding folks to not forget about the real world!  It can be easy for one to drift into unproductive actions or habits.  No doubt that all the doom and gloom, depressing news and market statistics can, at least subliminally affect all of us from time to time. It's great for all of us to get a shot of positive reinforcement and good common sense from time to time. Great job. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2009!
