CLARIFICATION:   This article is simply an observation of the social media webscape in general. It is not intended as a criticism towards the members of ActiveRain in any way, shape, form, suggestion, undertone, or otherwise assumed/implied.

~     o     ~     o     ~     o     ~     o     ~     o     ~

With the advent of Web 2.0, there's been a virtual proliferation of interactive social media websites offering all kinds of really cool features and tools, all for FREE!

At a time when cost containment has quite literally become a way of life and a necessary survival tactic for today's Real Estate Professional, FREE is greatly appreciated! Especially for those of us who are constantly challenged with just covering our basic monthly expenses.

Unfortunately, in this rapidly spawning multiplicity of platforms chalk full of FREE stuff, the results have bred a rather 'spoiled' attitude from among those of us who have benefited greatly from their use. And the minute any hint of monetization rears its ugly head, the masses cry 'Foul!' and start jumping ship, heading off to the next recently-launched latest and greatest Internet FREE fest!

Okay, so maybe users don't necessarily jump ship immediately, but there certainly is a considerable amount of whining and resistance to the possibility of 'charging' a fee for something, even if that 'something' is simply an upgrade or improved version of what historically has been offered for FREE. And it doesn't really matter what the actual upgrade amount is, or whether the added benefits are justified. Anything more than FREE is just too much!

Granted, our community here at ActiveRain is somewhat unique. While I would consider this to be a social network, its application and impact extends well beyond a mere social environment. If offers significant features/benefits that serve to improve or enhance our businesses as well.

Here are some of the common methods currently being implemented for creating self-sustaining revenue on social networks:

1.   Advertisement Support:   Sell advertising space on the network. This is by far the most common, unfortunately ads on most social networks don't have the best track record of click-thru rate.

2.   Subscription Fee:   Require a monthly subscription fee of ALL members. This has been effective for dating sites, but that's about it.

3.   Data Mining:   Selling off membership data to 3rd party groups. Definitely my least favorite of the bunch, and really not an option unless you tell your members up front what your plans are.

4.   Site Sponsorship:   Developing partnerships with key companies to sponsor various network events or sponsor sections of the network.

5.   Affiliate Marketing:   A cooperative venture where a social network sells/promotes another company's products/services on their network, and splits the profits with that company.

My point in all this is not to voice criticism, per se, towards those who tend to complain about monetization or charging fees for certain features. We've all been spoiled to some degree by the rampant availability of FREE stuff. Neither am I condemning those companies who have contributed in unleashing the 'spoiled' monster.

Users/members of social networks need to be reminded that the company behind each social media site is a business, and as such, needs to create and maintain a self-sustaining profit to remain solvent/operational. Otherwise, all those really cool tools and features that you've been enjoying won't be FREE anymore. They'll be GONE!

Social media companies, on the other hand, need to create viable revenue streams that offer reasonable ROI on member investment, and justifies the fees being charged.

If social networks are to successfully survive and grow in today's challenging economy, there needs to be a better recognition/understanding of the truly cooperative/collaborative relationship that is exists between the network management and its vested members.

The first tenet of the ActiveRain Weltanschauung is this:

"We understand that the value of the ActiveRain community rests entirely with its members."

Great post!  At some point - this all costs someone money and if we want to continue to use great platforms like Active Rain we need to realize that AR and others like it will need to make a profit. And we may need to participate in helping with that profit.

Rich, I was someone that proposed last year that it would be a good idea to have a nominal fee for all subscribers (and if I remember correctly that didn't go over well :-)

I don't believe most here are complaining about paying for added service  (At least, that isn't what I'm seeing)   I do think though that some members (myself included) feel the time should have been taken to fix what was already promoted (Localism for example) before starting a new project.  (Kind of like when my hubby starts a project at home and then doesn't finish, and then moves on to the next and doesn't finish...shhh don't tell him I said typed that)

Many of us really got excited about Localism and sponsored communities from the get-go only to have to wait for the bugs to be fixed. This is why I am taking the "wait and see" position with the new upgraded blogs.  I will participate and glady help support ActiveRain, but I'll wait til it's all shiny and bright.

I wonder how many social media platforms will come crashing down for lack of funding in the coming year or merge to stay afloat? Everybody is eventually going to have to come up with a way to monitise and if the contnet on the site isn't valuable enough to the users then they are going to fade off into the sunset. Certainly sites like Active Rain and Trulia have established value, but with the current market who is going to pay to keep the contnet rolling in?

A good monitization example mioght be MarketingProfs.com. Their pay to view option offers tremendous value to a marketing professional and their user-base is willing to pay for access.

Rich, ABSOLUTELY! I wonder if all the Rainers believe that you guys work free? Of course everyone thinks that of Realtors don't they? This is a magnificent site and deserves monetary support. Cashflow is the key. Period.

I appreciate all that AR has done for us. It's no small job and I think so many are just taking it for granted. If each member would simply contribute a small piece it would add up to revenue~something everyone and all companies deserve.

I'm behind you!

I was having this conversation with my hubby the other day. It's not just social media.  Think of the whole thing with Napster.  There is a free culture brewing online that is being fed by many different things.  I think that there is a very powerful psychological dynamic that has occurred, that is creating problems for businesses.  Facebook is having the same problem about how to monetize what they do.

It costs money for the servers and the staffing to run these sites.  By offering so much for free at first, it becomes really difficult to regin the monster in later.

While I would agree in principle, there will always be instances in development where other projects have to shifted, for whatever reasons. I know that Localism is a priority at this time, and hopefully, we'll soon see that platform achieve it's full vision/purpose.

Rich, I have only been a member since Nov. '08. but one has only to read all the success stories and cheerleading for AR to see it's value. I did upgrade to the new blog and I'm sure time will tell if that was the right thing to do, though I won't have anything to compare it to really. So as soon as I get a few leads from my upgraded blog I will think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread! LOL In the meantime I will keep reading and blogging. Thanks to everyone at AR.

Hey Rich,

Of course free will always be attractive, but I'm a bottom line kind of guy.  The Google juice that ActiveRain provides definitely has VALUE!  It's well worth paying for.

Rich, I don't think it was the cost of the upgrade so much as the way it was presented.  We got new free outside blogs and then all of a sudden there was a charge for the new and improved version, making our free blogs have pod people instead of our picture.  And this was on the heels of finding out that some of us have been paying monthly for localism when it was really launched yet and hadn't had the bugs worked out.  Add that to the fact that most of us are seriously hurting and looking for ways both big and small to cut expenses, not add them.  I think it was just bad timing.  I love it here on Active Rain but right now I am not in a position to take on anymore debt... just trying to keep it together.

If you take this:

Users/members of social networks need to be reminded that the company behind each social media site is a business, and as such, needs to create and maintain a self-sustaining profit to remain solvent/operational.

And change it to:

Clients of real estate professionals need to be reminded that the agent behind each sale or listing runs a business, and as such, needs to create and maintain a self-sustaining profit to remain solvent/operational.

Folks may relate a bit more. No one wants to work for free!

Of all that I participate in, I find AR to be the most valuable.  While I like free, I would pay if I had to.  Of course, there is an amount of $ where I would draw the line but AR has been quite economical with anything you have charged for.  I sponsored some communities in the beginning and really bought into the vision (Kris's comment about Localism reflects mine) and then it seemed dead in the water and so I chose to be "top neighbor".  I have been quite active in Twitter and discovering many buttons that say "donate" for new applications - I wonder how much $ that generates - I have never clicked one.

I have definitely seen the proliferation of cherry-pickers in the 2.0 world.  They must find me through my exposure on AR, but I get emails and free offerings regularly.  Some seem to hold promise, others not, but I can't help but view them all as Johnny-come-latelys (with apologies to Johnny) compared to the AR network.  Love ya!

Hi Rich, just keep in mind the old bell curve we learned in school. There are early adapters, then the masses, then the ones you finally get it.

I try to keep that in perspective when I bring about change. I haven't upgraded my blog yet because I have been sick and just starting to feel better and I read that someone was checking  into us getting to keep the domains we had on the outside blog. But I've been thinking I may just do a whole new blog for it and focus just on Saline, which most of my localism posts are about. Then I would use AnnArborUndressed for Ann Arbor posts.

If their was a lot of hella ballu about this, I guess I missed it. 20.00 a month is very fair.

Is a good post and realistic. The free stuff is cool but everything has value has value for a reason and there is a cost to that.  It is the same analogy for a realtor to have a commission paid by a seller !  Typically the realtor who agrees to do it for nothing is worth very little too : )

Rich, I too believe if you charged all members a fee, not a one would leave and would be happy to pay for it.  We know this place is too valuable and it could then be a lower cost during a time when people are having difficulties.  But we need to remember it's our CHOICe whether or not to use the added features....This is a wonderful place to be and most of us had have many success stories and thank the leaders for all the hard work.

Rich... I believe this also... very well stated. I remember about 1 1/2 years ago when things weren't going right on AR and a few members were always whining... and I basically said,... PS... this site is free. You can't have it all.  And then rumors went around that AR was going to charge. And now the $19 charge for the outside blogs?  A very good investment, considering all that AR and the people behind it have done....  as Carole stated, we know how valuable AR is.... but sell it to another company that could destroy this community, I might be out though....  it's just been a great time on here, learning experience, and fun to share... all while earning new business.  Again, you bring up some great points.

"We've all been spoiled to some degree by the rampant availability of FREE stuff."

I admit I am happily spoiled by all of the free stuff that has been of immense value to me and provided by both Active Rain and it's members. It's impossible to measure the total benefits because it's been available FREE as a venue, resource and learning environment that I might otherwise have missed or worse skipped initially if I had been forced to pay. I sponsor some neighborhoods that I purchased during the great "Localism Land Rush" and I remember all the weeping and wailing that accompanied that event. And for what? Everyone survived that just fine! As long as it's voluntary and a person is willing to invest in any new services beyond all of the already enormous offerings and perksof being a member at this incredible site then so be it. It's a choice!

As with the "Land Rush" maybe I should write another post regarding "What's all the fuss about Twenty bucks a Month?"

Oh and in case no one has bothered to mention this lately, I just want to say Thank You for everything Active Rain has given all of us!

Are you saying we is cheap?  Not us realtors!!!!!!!  We have lots of money to spend right now

8:25pm • #51

A year or two ago when this topic came up of monetizing AR, a number of us were willing to pay a monthly/yearly charge. We thought it would improve the quality, keep out those who merely post for for 200 points, and would eliminate those (maybe) that just join and do nothing else. It would have raised the bar and thus worth the cost to join.

We understand that AR needs to create a means to be self-sustaining and make a profit. AR likewise should consider that agents are the same type of business. Hence, we must evaluate how we spend our time and money, and evaluate the ROI. We each must decide how AR fits into our overall business plan and compare it to other forms of marketing to determine which best hits our target market to generate the most income or benefit. Some have decided that AR is worth their time and money. Some have decided in favor of their personal blogs. It's no different that some agents advertising in the newspaper, while others prefer monthly newsletters.

The one thing I disagree with in your post, is that AR feels we have been getting something for free. I would likewise mention that AR has been getting the Rainers' content for free in return. It seems to be an equal trade. Without the Rainers' posts, AR would be nothing. Only the Rainers' posts give AR a reason for being. I would hope that AR considers it a RECIPROCAL relationship.

It seems that the minimal fees that I now pay are because AR offered me something of specific marketable value...in my accounting book, I am only paying for about 5% of the TOTAL VALUE of Active Rain... seems the other 95% is FREE.... You can jump on here at any given time and learn what you'd pay thousands for to learn at a seminar---plus travel time & expenses. You can learn about the cutting-edge technology and applications in the pipeline HERE---all right here...A consistent pattern I've seen here in my YEAR of membership, is that before it's happening EVERYWHERE, it's being talked about and explained, invented or created or offered as a Beta program right HERE at AR. I think that's amazing, really amazing... I feel SO CONNECTED (too bad I have loose wires, but know I couldn't be plugged in to any better circuit!) (And we, too, should be SELLING THE DIFFERENCE in our work...the 1% more commission we charge over all the other agencies...I talk about the 1% difference! Usually, THAT's the VALUE people are willing to BUY)

Kevin:   Serious response here. Creating good relevant content should never cost us, at least not monetarily, unless we're using a ghost writer. Creating content is a labor of love and costs us time and energy. However, the ability to publish and effectively distribute that content normally does have a cost associated with it, regardless of the particular methods you employ. However, here on ActiveRain, members can utilize our basic FRRE services and contribute their content and take advantage of the collective SEO and Google juice, without a cost for publishing/distribution. Additional features/services/capabilities are available, some which require a fee-based subscription, and others that do not.

As a matter of fact, ever since AR provided the "Outside Blogs" which I don't like... for aesthetic purposes... my AR individual blog header does not fit in the individual posts of the outside blog... I've lost SEO. And I've continued to lose SEO with more changes. In the mean time, when I check the search engines, my WordPress blog is the one that shows up. So I'm posting more and more to that blog. Whatever works (and is free) is the one I'll use. BUT, I don't have a problem with ads placed on sites, as long as they don't compete with me.

Hey Rich and all you other AR folks - please note this is not a "complaint"

I agree - free is a great price - and we have all benefited from it.  I have voiced my disappointment and even used the word complaint - however it was not meant so much as "beef with AR" or a sign of jumping ship.

In today's market - yes we are all looking for ways to cut corners - make a buck and so on.... with some of the changes have come challenges and many of those issues have been put on the back burner.  We are all human - even you guys - and when responses and questions fly across the net - the answers and sometimes the questions themselves seem a little arrogant on all our parts.

Bottom line is - we will have members come and go - the burn out rate has never been discovered for AR - at some point we all run out of things to say even - a hot bag of air like me....

You know why I joined Active Rain?  My webmaster told me to.... because I had let a blog sit for a year afraid to write on it... he found AR and thought it would get me writing on my own page... it took me a year of being on AR before I realized what I was missing out.  Yes AR is free.... and at some point - I have to think about what I pay for - and take it more seriously - I will never walk away from AR - but there are only so many hours in a day - and I have a lot on my plate.  I appreciate your post and it screams volumes to a lot of what I have recently read and heard regarding AR....

The point I think that may be pushed under the table cloth here - is without your members - would AR be where it is today?   Would a lot of us be where we are today? The answer is simple - NO - we have all helped each other.

Free or not we all worked hard to get where we are - and I am sure we will all continue to work hard to get to the next level.  You will have people come and go..... it is that way with anything in business.... thanks again for your post it is nice to see some answers in print.

I think the price is very reasonable -- I just have a question about how the seo is going to work -- can you explain a bit more about the enhanced outside blog vs. the AR blog -- I think that may help some see the value.  Thanks.

Rich -

If I were a betting man (but these days, I try not to be), advertising-supported value-added social networking will become the norm on the Internet.  Those without advertising will be fee-based, for those of us tired of the advertising din.

There is too much competition on the web for any other way to work!

My two cents anyway!

Stay warm!

Rich, you guys are in business as we are and you deserve to make a profit.  The more money you make the more upgrades, etc go back in the system.  I think it is fine to have a free version and a enhanced version with more bells and whistles.  Thanks for all you do.  In fact, some do not appreciate systems when the system is free.

Rich, you look so handsome in your new picture!

Good post too!  You guys know what you're doing.  There is great wealth in what you've already achieved.  I applaud and support all of AR's paying services and I have tried all of them.  I just signed up for the group blog earlier this week.

Rich, first of all,

Please don't give Paul a knife - what are you thinking?

What network/business not only gives you the quantity and quality of the moral support and education that we get here from each other on a FREE basis?  This is provided by AR, hosted by AR.  We don't pay for that.

What about tech support - you guys answer your phones!  You return emails!  You call us!

A free blog that gets amazing Google results?  We don't pay for that.

The free outside blog?  Anyone who bothered to use it, gets to keep it for free.

And now an opportunity to get an extra Googlized blog for only $20 per month, that we already know how to use?

Even a tech-retarded old fogie like me knows - we got a good thing going here.

I sold another house yesterday, direct call from my blog.

Thanks, again, AR!

Rich, well written post and kudos to you!  I have often thought along the same lines as you went it comes to true value in a free online world.  Have we really become that spoiled?  I hope not but tend to think you are right and need to realize that these websites have a business component to them.  I say thanks to the creators of the freeware and neat gizmos and I know that I truly appreciate what it has does for my business.  Take care and happy blogging!

Rich - I was one of the spoiled that thought, wow they took my free blog away, but I was also one of the first to jump on board...  A little to much with my double blog booboo.  Thanks by the way for calling me personally and offering to help me get things worked out.  People will come around.

Rich: Well said. Keeping in mind that a fee to be part of such a powerful network will keep those who take advatage of the site :: all those who just create a profile and never do anything, others who post just to post and never give back and the list goes on. Either way, I thinking a fee would be a great return on my investment.

Rich, thanks for the response.  It is appreciated.  I'm anxious to view the blogs of those who have upgraded and see first hand the look and "feel" of them.  Hopefully those who have upgraded will write a post or two pointing us their way.

That "Nike Air Force" guy is leaving those comments all over the place, even here on an AR post!

I like Joan's question, and have been wondering the same thing, "I just have a question about how the seo is going to work -- can you explain a bit more about the enhanced outside blog vs. the AR blog"

And this comment from Virginia is too funny; "Even a tech-retarded old fogie like me knows - we got a good thing going here."

Describing these sites as a monster is a great analogy.  When will AR start charging us?  Thats the question that I ask myself, I see that they are starting to make money with Trulia now, making some money off the blogs, whats coming down the pipeline?

Hello Rich!  Great photo of you!  When I see folks complaining from time to time, I have often wondered what it feels like on the corporate end.  Active Rain is a spectacular creation for more reasons than I can count in digits.  Offering additional upgrades is business savvy and when reasonably priced, how can anyone complain?  Google juice is priceless and the more I don't have to overthink/strategize in order to accomplish my reach....the better I like a product!  : )  Good job AR Board!  Regards-Kathleen G

The term "Web 2.0" is completely meaningless, and the premise of this argument - that "Web 2.0", whatever it is, created the desire for free services over the web - is totally absurd.

Just my two cents.

Rich I agree 110% - FREE is great, and it works, for a while. But just look at Facebook, Digg, Twitter... all have a great user base, but they're hemorrhaging money. I read somewhere that Digg made $3M last year but it costs $6M a year to operate. Facebook is losing money as well, and Twitter isn't even making money. People will certainly understand why sites need to monetize if those or other Web 2.0 sites all of the sudden shut the doors.

You did leave out another popular business model: Pro accounts. Giving users a free account then the option to upgrade to pro. This model works so long as the pro account is really a major upgrade from the free account. This is probably the best way for most free sites to monetize without scaring away their users.

Rich I have been thinking about doing the outside blog. I think $19 bucks is not bad if the blog has more juice than my own website. As long as the product delivers that same way the free site does I think it is a bargain.

PS how is the weather sounds like the rain and snow are causing some real headaches.

Rich,

OK I've been absent for way too long.  Personal story here and I won't go into it now.  But..... if there is a monthly charge just let me know so I can pay it.  I have been gone for 6 or 7 months so all of this is new.  I have sure missed AR and it is good to be back I think???? :)

This was such a good blog. There are those that are really hanging on financially by a thin hair. Although $20.00 to a lot of individuals isn't worth thinking about, to them it might mean a meal or two.  Money for markieting just to stay alive in this market is difficult to come by.  These aren't bad or marginal Realtors just ones that have gotten caught in the Nations nightmare along with several million others.  I think timing is everything even in the business of the net.

Good to read you again. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in for so many others.

Rich,

I will tell my story in a blog this week, but not for a "poor me story," just a different  perspective from someone that is seeing what is happening from the inside out.  Thanks for remembering me.  I love your blogs and I'm getting reacquainted with AR again....so many new things in just 6 months.....busy people....I love it.

People and business that are started as web 2.0 need to continue to find creative ways to keep costs down for it's users, while still providing a good resource for communicating and generating business.  Those business that are the most creative in this platform will be the ones that will continue to thrive.
