biggest 2008 real estate storiesI suspect most people would like to forget 2008 and are hoping that what happened in 2008 will quietly slink away and not taint the new year, but the fact is almost all of it is seeping into 2009. As I looked back on last year and reviewed the top real estate stories in 2008, comparing those to 2007, I was amazed at the difficulty I encountered in choosing just 10 stories. Real estate was hit hard from a dozen different directions.

On everybody's minds, of course, is the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan. People want to know where the remaining $350 billion will be spent. Legislators want transparency and accountability this time around. California's Senator Boxer wants part of the money spent on housing, and President-elect Obama has promised to deliver a televised speech that he'll do exactly that.

Elizabeth

Accountability has to be paramount. It has become an example of the old red tape  that never seems to be accounted for fully.

Sincerely

Tom Braatz

Although, the bailout has been on everyone's radar lately, the two stories that could have a major impact for 2009 were the return of first time home buyers and the back to basics mortgage.

Ok, now I'm depressed...  Only kidding, but lining all ten up like that, it is kind of overwhelming.  Thank god the last one about first time home buyers was a positive - good to end on a high note.

I'm with the other comments-first time home buyers is going to be a positive as we all look at this year.  I'm love working with first time home buyers and am finally glad they are able to purchase homes.  It's a great market.  Thanks for sharing.

Hey, Elizabeth. I am not confident that they will do any better with the second $350 billion. I only hope that they do a better job and do what they say they are going to do. Tanks, Jim

It is time for EVERYONE to create their own economy and stop relying on the government to bailout everyone.

Thanks, everybody, for your input. I'm with ya'll on the return of first-time home buyers. It's great news that more than half of Californians can afford to buy a home now. I recall that the affordability index in 1978 was around 40%. In 2008, that number is 53%. That's remarkable, given our higher prices.

Elizabeth:  Looking back on those 10 biggest real estate stories of 2008 isn't so bad.  It is what it is.  If this is news to someone in our business, they probably won't be in it too much longer.

I wish the first time tax credit had had more of an impact, but I just haven't seen it. Folks are aware of it but seem pretty blase about the whole thing.

Hi Elizabeth,
Yes, I think most Americans do want to know where that money is going!  Personally, I think the housing industry has a larger effect on the economy than the car industry---seems like a good place to put that money to me
