skunk caught

Perhaps you get tired of hearing about skunks and possums and how many we have around my house due to our being too free with food and because my Raven-eating cat has cat food on the porch which she'll share if she has a juicy crow or bird to eat.

But here's another success story.  We had a heck of a time catching this one.  He absolutely played with our minds.  He was so beautiful with the white and black stripes.  As I saw him flaunting his beauty I wondered why no one has ever had a skunk-fur coat.....probably not even Cruella De Vil in the movie about 1001 Dalmations.

Canned sardines baited the trap.  No deal.

Cat food AND sardines baited the trap.  No deal.

Weiners baited the trap and got eaten but caught nothing.

Bacon!!  Bacon!!  He loved bacon.  Bacon trapped him.

We got up and he was in the trap madder than Nutsy when Charles Buell is pickin' on him.  We called Animal Control and they picked him up and delivered him to a more wooded area.  And Elizabeth, if you read this, they did NOT kill him.  They just relocated him.  Who knows, they may have dropped him out at the home of someone they dislike.  Nah....they wouldn't do that....

I'm not paying a referral fee for that move.  sorry.  I don't think I would even take him as a free relocation

James, perhaps if you live right, you'll be lucky enough to have a relocation like this one.  You may have to move from DC to find the right one.

Russ, you should have heard the guys who moved him just to do my husband a favor.  The "skunk lady" is on leave and no one wants to do it while she's gone.  It is amazing, however, that they don't spray while trapped and moved!!

Raven, you are so sweet to stop by.  I know you and Charles are missing our little buddy Nutsy.

Hi Barbara;

Very interesting client! I do appreciate your post..........................................

Living out in the country, I've had to relocate one skunk that got under our porch and wouldn't leave.  So I had to relocate him with a .30 cal rifle.  It was driving our dogs crazy! No to mention the wonderful scent.

Normally, they leave on their own, but when they set up house keeping, they've got to go.  And in the country, there is no "Animal Control".

Now how did they relocate him, without getting sprayed.... we've trapped skunks, and they couldn't (or wouldn't) do that...

and the stink, when they shot the skunk was worse than having skunks around the house.

Raven, Nutsy may never make it back from Mexico!  I'm sorry that that would make you happy.

Anthony, this client was extremely intelligent.  I think he'll adapt nicely to his new home. His?  It could be a she....

Mike, years ago my husband shot one in our yard.  I don't think he likes to kill things.  He goes squirrel hunting and deer hunting but I think it's just for the comraderie, not the shooting.  Besides that upon receiving the shot, the skunk shot back and it smelled BAD!

Alan, the control officer has a quilt in front of her and walks slowly up to the trap, places the quilt around the trap, tucks it in, gently picks it up, loads it and carries it away.  The ones who did it today let him out somewhere and reported back that he was really happy to be out of the trap.  They were happy, too, that they didn't get sprayed.  I just learned all this about skunk trapping in the past month or two.

Barbara - If I ever have a problem with skunks I'll know to use bacon to trap them. If they are anything like gators, once you get rid of one another one takes it's place.

Hi Barbara; He sure is beautiful but would not like the relocation job since we know what happens when they get mad! Guess this time the officer got off lucky. Or maybe she is just especially gentle and the skunk reacts accordingly. Still... do not want her job!!

Barbara, We used to have problems with skunks some time ago. They would dig under the HVAC unit and get under the house. I guess that they thought that it was a cozy spot to raise a fam...

Interesting !

Now having not seen a skunk relocation before, my question is, how on earth do they move him without getting a faceful of skunkspray ????

... I have to believe that is a defense mechanism and if anyone picked up the cage, surely the skunk would let fly !!!!???

Barbara do you have sign in the yard, "All Skunks Welcome". This one sounds like a sly old dog, but you finally got him.

Robert, gators!!!  WOW!!  I can't imagine having to worry about gators.  One of their bites would be more deadly than a skunk spray!!  At least you live through the stink.

Eileen, evidently there is some phenomena about their not spraying in the cage.  This is our third one to relocate and each time they go peacefully.

Michael, they are little diggers for sure.  You should see where the trap was placed.  It's about an inch lower where the skunk dug trying to get out.  They could get under the house or porch easily.

Shelton, read the comment above to Alan and moving them is explained.  It is strange!  Maybe it is a local skunk custom.  LOL

James, the sign also welcomes possoms and squirrels and Ravens (poor little thing) and deer.  We seem to have them all.  There are a lot of woods near us that have been cleared for housing and the animals are looking for relocation.

That is a problem for the animals. When we build our houses, we leave the animals homeless. I like you don't mind sharing, but there is a limit.

Barbara,

That blog post really stinks. Just kidding. I am in Oaxaca. Very pretty place and warm. Cannot figure out what it with your Godson Nutsy. He is not answering the business line and he is suppossed to be running the show. I wonder if he is out doing thousands of inspections.

James, my limit is my house, my yard and under my house!!

Steven, glad you're having fun.  Nutsy is strangely silent here too.  No doubt he is doing lots of inspections for you and is too busy to answer the phone.

Charles, sssssshhhhhhhh....don't spoil their fun............

Barbara:  Everything is better with bacon.  YUM!  Good to know that our unwanted furry critters can be snagged with it as well.

People, people, what's all this talk about shooting skunks. Really!

Barbara, skunk furs were apparently very popular in the 1940s. See this coat on e-Bay.

Chris, bacon has bagged many a guy! They all seem to like breakfast with bacon, sausage, ham and eggs!  Musta been a male skunk!  LOL

Elizabeth, you are UP on EVERYTHING, including skunk coats.  That one does not have what I envision.  I'd like one with black and white fur!  All black is so minkish!   And the fur should have long hairs like the skunk above in the trap.

Deb, read a few comments above about how they do NOT spray when trapped.  It is strange, I know, but seems to be the way they are.

Barbara,

I still cannot get him on the phone. I was fairly busy but it blows my mind tht Nutsy is not answering the phone. I guess he is doing those thousands of inspections he promised. Weird thing is today I saw a glimples of someone who looked much like him. It was out of the corner of my eye. Do you think it was a relative. I am sure he must be back home.

Larry, you are thinking with an evil mind!  LOL

Debi, wouldn't a coat made out of several of those furs be pretty?

Carol, thanks.  Our friend helped us bait the trap several nights in a row.  He was going to catch that skunk or his reputation was going to be ruined!  He was so glad when we finally got it.

Barbara,

Since Raven bit the dust, it makes sense to me that you would have sent that skunk to Charlie. He could have used it as a home inspection assistant.

Charles, you're so cruel to that little creature!  : )

Steven, Charles should use a skunk assistant.  He'd probably get a lot of attention that way. Keep having fun!

Due to Charlies negative attitude about baths, the skunk assistant would be honesty in advertising.
