Concordia National-Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament 2009 for high schoolers ... is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14 to Saturday, January 17, 2009, at Concordia University, Irvine.
This Home Schoolers Association Debate Tournament is associated with National Christian Forensics & Communications Association and has almost enough volunteers to serve for judging about 2000 different speeches and rounds of debate.
The 400 young people (competitors) are all home schooled and range from 12 to 18 years of age. This tournament provided almost 2000 different opportunities to see the young people in speech and debate action.
It was great and interesting fun for Christi and me to help by serving as volunteer judges for this event last year.
If you have questions or want to participate, contact tournament director is Rebecca Nogy.
What is debate? Discussion for elucidating truth; strife in argument or reasoning, between persons of different opinions, each endeavoring to prove his own opinion right, and that of his opposer wrong; to discuss or examine different arguments in the mind. [Webster's 1828 Dictionary]
Speeches during the tournament are almost like acting/story-telling, ranging from current events, impromptu speaking, and debates. Something there for everyone.
Debate resolutions for this year are:
Lincoln Douglas Value Debate: Resolution: When in conflict, idealism ought to be valued above pragmatism.
Team Policy Debate: Resolution: That the United States Federal Government should significantly change its policy toward India.
Helping young people, our leaders for tomorrow, learn about reasoning through debate and public speaking is a great investment of our time.
