I have a confession, actually an addiction. It's nothing too serious... I don't drink, I don't smoke and I don't use drugs. So what's this dirty little secret I've been hiding???

I love junk food. Not often but from time to time I get wicked cravings for salty, greasy chips. Yes plain old potato chips. Give me a BIG bag of chips and a Classic Coke and I'm a happy camper. Fortunately I usually only do this once a month so it's not really a problem.

So a few days ago I had one of my cravings and I gave in. I picked up a couple of bags of chips, one Bacon & Hickory and one Bar-B-Q. These were 200 gram bags (approx. 7 ounces).

What seemed really weird was how small the bags were!

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

So why were the bags so small??? For the first time in many years, these chip bags were full. I mean jammed to the top with my favorite salty, greasy addiction.

For a long time one of my pet peeves was buying chips, opening the bag and seeing that is was about half full or in reality, half empty. The package weight is always right but I never saw the point of selling half empty bags of chips other than to create a deceptive illusion of getting more than we actually were.

And my point is... by being honest, truthful and selling me a full bag of chips, I noticed, I smiled and I was happy. Why?

- the chips were good as always

- they used less materials in the packaging which is great for the environment

- by using less packaging it probably cost them a little less per bag

- and by filling up that smaller bag of chips, they stood out from the crowd with their honesty

The point is, it doesn't take much to get people's attention. Sometimes all it takes is a 99 cent bag of "truth" to make a really BIG impression on someone.

Hi Marti,

I've always been a chocolate and sweets kind of girl, not really into the salty snacks very often--but when I do get the occasional bag of chips I'm always frustrated by the bag not being full. A full but smaller bag of chips would have made me notice and be happy too. It's got me thinking about what little things I could be doing that would make a big impression. Also, thanks for including my post, "The Widget Every Agent Needs on Their Blog" in your What You're Writing section; I appreciate that.

Have a great day,

Anne Rains

Hi Marti - thanks for including my chart post in this review!

I do what Deb mentioned way up above me - junk and a Diet Coke.  ;-)

"All that and a bag of chips" - a saying from quite some time ago here in the rain....

Marti,

A perfect example of how an small product feature can make a lasting impression on a customer. It can be the same with a service that is provided. A extra step to assist someone and he'll remember you.
