Wordless Wednesday....Or, Why I Was Late To Work Today!

By
Real Estate Agent with Helping people in transition 210155

With all the new homes being built here in the Raleigh, Cary and Apex areas of North Carolina, a sight like this is not too uncommon as developers move old houses like this one to make way for new homes.

You can't stop progress. But you can stop the flow of traffic!

This picture was taken on Route 751 in Apex, NC.

Did youj get the owner's name so we could list it? Looks like a great house- just needs a little staging and curb appeal!

What a great picture and at least one person in N.C. is able to move.  It has always amazed me to watch this process.

Lanre -And now you've seen it all! You may live your life in peace now!!!

TH - Not quite the move we had in mind though! But watching the process was really quite interesting.

Craig ~ I saw this on facebook and wanted to stop by AR and comment! Where exactly or why exactly do they move these gems? Are they actually inhabitable once they reach their new destination?

Terrie - From looking at this home, I was wondering the same thing. But it is someone's home. So, I guess they felt moving it was in their best interest. It doesn't look habitable from what I saw. But to each his own!!!

I was psyched to see that they were moving it rather than tearing it down which happens all too often around here. Fun photo!

Hi Craig;)  I can relate to this.....we have had 2 houses moved through the years.  It cost between $5000-7500 to move them and set on the property, providing you do not need to have the electric company raise the street electric cables, if cables need to be raised it was about $1500 per line.  If I remember correctly anything over 12 feet had a price tag with it.(needless to say you can not afford to have over 1-2 raised)  The City requires you to bring the entire house up to city code if it is placed inside the city, but that may change from city to city.  I must admit they are a sight going down the street..my husband rode on top of the roof on one of the houses to keep the tree limbs from tearing off the roof, which I could find my photo of that, as he made the front page of our local newspaper. (seems like the heading was "A FREE RIDE")  ha ha

Craig, This was worth being late--and I HATE to be late.  I actually would have been facinated with watching them move a house!

Craig, I do see a few houses being moved from time to time, but it seems as if it getting cheaper to raze the house and build a new one v/s moving the old one.

Hi Craig - I'm sure that makes for a great deal of irritated motorists.  I haven't run into that one on the highways and hope I never do.

Liz - It happens here too....all too often. thanks for stopping in and taking the time to comment. Come back soon!

Donna - Thank you for that information. I had no idea what the costs involved are for a move like this. You've just  provided another reason I love ActiveRain...the sharing of info from other agents. Thank you!

Carole - I pride myself on my promptness. I too hate being late. But this one was worth it!!!

Robert - Well said! And funny too!

Michael - I guess it depends on where you live what the costs of a move like this are. See Donna's comments for some first hand cost experiences.

Jon - I must admit, there were a lot of people making U-turns. But I was fascinated watching it. So I stuck out the wait.

Cindy - That's funny! If you know me, then you know I can't remain worldess on ANY topic! Apparently what was going on here was the house movers were trying to get this house up a hill on the left in the picture and trying to figure out the best course of action. They did move it somewhat to open a lane and let everyone proceed.....after about 20 minutes though!

I've seen pictures and tv shows about moving homes, but I (fortunately) have never had the opportunity to see one in front of me on the road.

Bob - Lucky you! This little delay cost me 30 minutes of my life!

Leesa - There were some... how should I put it?....Ahhhhh, ....rather upset motorists. There, that's about as politically correct as I can put it!!!
