Self Promotion Is Not A Dirty Word

By
Education & Training with Genworth Financial

Want some good news?  Create it yourself.  When we blog, send newsletter and communicate to our customers, are we spreading good news about ourselves?

In one of the training sessions I conduct, I discuss how to use a newsletter effectively for Realtors and mortgage professionals.  The very top of the newsletter should be something positive you did.  Not about the home values.  Not about rates.  Not about the market.  Something positive about you.  And that something about you should be something positive about you as a professional.

Let your readers know that you sold 6 houses last quarter (or whatever the number in whatever the time period).  It does not matter the number.  Most consumers think that the market is dead.  Now you have let them know that you are still in business and are still closing deals.  They will want to know how you do it when they have read that everyone else is saying the market is stalled. They will see you as a success story in the difficult marketplace.

Let your readers know what you have done to give back to the community.  Hosted a Habitat for Humanity day?  Let your readers know.  Helped out in a soup kitchen?  Let your readers know.  Walked in a walk-a-thon and raised money?  Let your readers know.  Your readers are your community and they want to know what you are giving back to the community.  It is not shallow, egotistical or inappropriate to make sure your community knows that you care and are giving back.

Don't be shy about sharing your accomplishments and good deeds.  Your community wants to know and they will feel connected to you.

Steve,

I think that is great advice. Most of us are shy about self promotion....but you're right, we should put the good news out there!

I like your thoughts. I found over the years that every ones favorite topic is, well, themselves. I have noticed a few in our area that do self promotions like you suggest, but in many cases, get carried away. One thing I noticed is every time you are in front of a "borrower" ask for referrals. So many do not. Not just one but as many as you can - keep it professional but ask. For some reason as we get complacent we often seem to forget to "basics"

Great post, its very true.  I belong to a site called Kiva that does micro loans to 3rd world entrepeneurs. I made a little post about it on a blog somewhere a few years back and got a ton of people asking me about it.  I love the whole Kiva concept so I was passionate about my replies and I scored two clients as a result of that little post.  What was funny was I wrote this big professional blog post which got little attention.  However, that little comment about kiva....:-)
