Homeowner Type Repairs

By
Home Inspector with StepByStep Home Services LC

We all see them and some leave us scratching our head wondering, "what were they thinking?"

The most common repairs I see are electric related and I can't help but wonder if all those online "do it yourself" sites are a good idea after all. Looking over a few diagrams doesn't automatically make one a qualified (insert trade here). Fortunately just about all do it yourself jobs are repairable with a little help from a qualified contractor.

Here are a few images from an inspection showing repairs by a self proclaimed handyman.

Nice pictures. Send them into the ASHI Reporter. Always brightens my day when I know I'm not looking at the worst case scenarios. Since you mentioned electrical problems. Did you hear about the recall on a handyman electrical book? Vince,

Sometimes we just have to walk away shaking our heads. You have to wonder just what they were thinking. What was the logic behind the work they were doing?

Here's one of mine.

I was showing a house the other day and we looked in the crawl and they had a log holding up the brace.  Couldn't get a picture.

That "poor homeowner" always gets blamed, I guess thats why the DIY network has so much opportunity for improvement.

I think all we home inspectors should get together and publish a coffee table book of our best pictures.
