This is my favorite time to plan a vacation.  It's cold here and it gives me something to look forward to in the spring....besides warmer weather!

Colleen, I never would have guessed Buffalo, but congratulations.  I am glad to see that Arizona was represented as well, as the desert is definately a unique landscape.

Hi Colleen,

I see that Pennsylvania made the US portion of the list, as well, but not New Hampshire :-(

I suspect we all feel our state should have made the list, but I believe that in reality, 2009 will be the year we stay home due to the economic crisis. I have been to Buffalo and stayed at the Falls twice. I agree that it is a must-see destination. That much is true. And if you don't mind, I'd like to see this post additionally feature the one place each of us feels is a best place to visit in our individual states.

I'd like to highlight the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Centrally located, the Lakes Region is a four season destination. The lakes are fed by mountain run-off and Newfound Lake in particular, is the cleanest lake in New England. This area is within an hour from the Atlantic coast, if you like a taste of the ocean while you're here. It is within an hour's drive from the White Mountain National Forest, part of the Appalachian Mountain Trail. You can snowmobile to Canada from here, and the state has no sales tax!

Thank you for indulging me. I look forward to seeing what others have to say about their home state.

What? Jackson Wyoming did not make the list. Come on! Just because there is 3 feet of snow on the ground is not a reason and the temps are belowing freezing.

Winter snow mobile rides into Yellowstone.

Skiing as much as you want.

Great restaurants.

Lots of wildlife viewing.

That was really a neat way I like their website.  Will have to watch it next week to say if there are other places to visit.  One would think that the Greater Hudson Valley would be there!

You know I have never been to Buffalo, I will have to put that on my list of cities to see.  I was glad to see Arizona is on the list.  The desert is quite beautiful this time of year when it is blooming.  Best part of the list was seeing Hawaii on that list.  We just got back from there spending time with our kids while they were on Spring Break.

Thanks for sharing!

HAWAII made it.    This is an incredible year to visit as airline tickets are very well priced (even to interior small cities such as Missoula Montana!)  Hotel and vacation condo's are bargains!  And ok..the prices on real estate look incredible.   I'm waiting for 2012 to hear people say "Gee wish I would have bought in 2009" rather like I kept hearing about "1999" for years!

However....I don't see many people from Buffalo coming over here?  Guess the Caribbean is so much easier.  But stop by for a cup of Kona Coffee and some balmy breezes anytime.

Colleen, what a great post!  I'm disappointed that the Seattle area didn't make that NY Times article.  Thanks for sharing the 44 that did!

Do you know how the author came up with the locations that they did?
