Real Living HER logo"Blog Like a Maniac—But Build It Yourself"

Actually the advice is about using Real Living's Web Builder, just a small part of the advice is about blogging.

Each of our sites  is a sub domain of www.realliving.com  We've had the sites forever... Since before there was a Real Living.  Back in the days we were HER Realtors, pre 2001.  Web builder is kinda, sorta,  semi easily updated but not as easy as any blog I have used.

My site is http://www.realliving.com/maureen.mccabe/  I use the domain MaureenMcCabe.com with my site.

I used to update my website a lot.  Before blogging.

Below is an excerpt from Real Living about using Web Builder... Real Living has the link via PDF on our intranet  now  and it is right on the Web Builder as Web Tips for anyone with Real Living.  Part of the advice is to use Web Builder to  blog right on our website:

"Blog Like a Maniac—But Build It Yourself
When you blog on free sites like Blogger, it’s great for their SEO, but not so much for yours. There’s no reason you can’t create a simple blog using Web Builder. Just create a page called Blog on your Web Builder site, and for each entry, add a new block of text. And remember—the more often you blog, the better the SEO results."

I hate to seem critical but would that work?  Could I do the same thing on a  subdomain of my company website as I am doing on my Wordpress.org blog ColumbusBestBlog.com  or even here on ActiveRain?  Get the same SEO results?

Here's a test... It's a Blog - no it's a website

What's the difference?

Blogs the newest content is on top, the older stuff gets pushed down... I suppose I could switch the newest content up to the top each time I'd post.

There'd be no Trackbacks.... it's a struggle but we get by without Trackbacks on ActiveRain without too much hardship.  No Permalinks.... hmmmm I have grown accustomed to those permalinks.  Tags? Categories.

Isn't that what Google wants? Isn't that why Google spiders love blogs...some blogs more than others.

The biggie at least as far as I am concerned... no comments.   Blogging is not broadcasting.

Could posting content everyday without permalinks, tags, categories, comments etc. make a website into a blog?

And about that "build it yourself".... you don't own it.   Publish pages

Well if you want to follow that advice, then blog with wordpress.org and build it on your own server.  I use Wordpress.com and it's fine.

This is, in my opinion, just a shallow argument to get you to use their software more.  Why? I dunno.  But what matters is this - getting search engines to notice your content when people look for stuff in your area.  It doesn't matter to the people whehter htey find it on your domain, or blogger.com or wordpress.com.  What matters is that htey find what you write and contact YOU about it.

This is why my wordpress.com blog has a page titled "Search Listings" and it's a link for several IDX searches plus the link for the basic search.  All of my ActiveRain blogs have links at the bottom to search my IDX link.

I have a WordPress.org blog

In our board we can't have our own IDX.  We have to link to the companies search.  We get the leads if they come from our site.  That is not a concern.   Not being able to have your own IDX  would not be true of all Real Living markets but it true in Central Ohio.

We dominate in our market.  I can understand wanting people to use the company websites (sub domains or whatever they are) but I know  it won't make them into blogs.

I just hear about WordPress.org the other day and haven't checked it out yet. I plan to look into it

WordPress.org is the best. You own it.

Hey, Maureen...I'm still scratching my head.  Forgive the silly question, but wouldn't you still own your content if it were on your website?  Or, is your website company owned?  Regardless, you've given me one more thing to think about! As for wordpress.org, I'm going to bring my blog to life there very soon!  I'm getting help, though.  AR is so EASY to use that wp seems like a monster to me.

It is a sub domain of the company website so no I don't own it but I have never been overly concerned about that with a website,  What is there on a website, search listings,  we can't have our own IDX, some hokey 1990's real esate garbage....

I own the domain name that I use... but the site is owned by Real Living, always has been.

It is not like you slave over adding content on a website the way you do if you "blog like a maniac" or even occasionally add some content.

It is the same issue that some have with adding content here on ActiveRain, on RealTown blogs (where I started blogging) or on other blog platforms where you don't own it. I have no plans to leave RL but I think it is silly to tell us we could blog on a website... or maybe I am wrong.

The Real Living Blog is on Blogger, http://rlblog.realliving.com/ I am wondering if that is changing. The Real Living Blog was on Myst.com not sure what happened there but relatively recently that blog disappeared and the blog on Blogger appeared. I never paid any attention to whether they moved all the content from the old blog to the new blog.

thanks for the comment Natalie.  I need to make some decisions about my WP blog.

Hi Maureen... I think that you hit the nail on the head when you wrote:

"Blogging is not broadcasting."

The key element that makes blogging so great is the conversation interactivity.  Someone should let Real living in on the secret! ;)

Someone at Real Living knows the difference between a blog and a website.

Real Living's had a blog since 2006.

This link goes to the website now.  I wonder why it does not go to their Blogger blog but maybe they are abandoning that one too.  These were Real Estate Blogsites from Myst, com first one in the list is Linda Davis, the Homes Magazine Blog is still REB from Myst.com, fourth one in the list looks like they have a different blog too,

Some REB Customer Sites

very expensive blogs.  In 2006 Real Living was recommending Real Estate Blogsites (Myst.com ) or a Blogger blog to us for blogging. In May 2008 at our national company event (convention?) they recommended we get on ActiveRain or at least that was the message of the keynote (?)  speaker.   Mr. Swaenepol.

The same web tips on our internal site recommends involvement with social media.  I believe they mention FaceBook and LinkedIn but missing... ActiveRain.

I wonder if the omission is  because, "you don't own it. " or more correctly "we don't own it."
