My BEST Activerain Success Story---He had me at Hello!

I have read-and been a participant in some of the VERY BEST success stories all because of Activerain.  It has taken my business and many of yours to a new level.  We blog because we love it, we find treasured friendships in the rain and have people reading us from all over.  We get work-and lots of it.

Still, nothing has affected me more then this.  A post I was undecided about putting up just before Christmas because it was anything BUT cheery.  The  amazing people who came on to lend support with the nicest comments anyone could ask for that helped during a very difficult time.  And after.

For those of you who missed it:  It Seems Like Only Yesterday--

One very special person contacted me not long after the post was up, our own Gayle Balaban  Gayle Balaban/E. Tn Waterfront Real Estate .  She is involved with Poodle Rescue and Gayle worked very hard to get me a rescue dog for my mother (who is still heartbroken, I watch her deteriorate a little bit more every day).

Gayle contacted probably EVERY person she knows (and she seems to know them ALL) to help.  Hours of her time that I'm sure she didn't have to spare.  But we were hitting a blank wall---for most places my mother was deemed "too old" to adopt a dog.  In spite of the fact that I am about 10 minutes from her house and over there (often with my OWN dogs to play) 4 or 5 times a week.

Standards are rigorous and I do understand that.  I have heard some of the horror stories of pets that have been put to adoption.  Gayle had so much trust and confidence in us, she even offered my mother one of HER dogs.  God bless you, Gayle

I thought it over and believed my mother would want a poodle.  I went to every shelter or called on Long Island and New York City looking for a small breed who was house-trained.  And came up with nothing.

We've ALL heard those stories about breeders and puppy mills.  I went back to a breeder I had used a few years ago for my own dog who I know is trustworthy.  There were puppies available, lots of them in fact and we went to see them ALL.  None were house trained as they claimed.

My mother has trained every single dog we have EVER had-and done it well.  This time I felt it would be too difficult for her.  I put one ad up on a site I found and quit looking---it was time to Let it Go.

Several weeks went by and I got an email from a breeder on Long Island.  She had a dog, she said, she was going to keep but just had too many dogs-as much as she loved it, she was letting it go.  She SCREENS HER BUYERS and I was very worried about my mother's age being a problem.  Although I spoke to her, she seemed unsure.

I went on to Activerain and sent her that blog in the hopes she would see my mother is capable and loving.  She called me to set up an appointment and I didn't even ASK the price of the dog---after seeing SO many I figured it somehow wouldn't be a "fit" for my mom.

I was WRONG.  He was in the kitchen and very shy when Laura and I arrived.  Within about 10 minutes he was coming to us and crawling up in our laps to be held.  He was a sweetheart, fully trained and I could tell the Breeder loved him very much

Surprisingly, she asked me almost no questions about my mom's ability to care for the dog.  He captured both Laura and my heart on site.  I have LONG believed that you don't choose your pet, in one way or another YOUR PET CHOOSES YOU!

I said I would love to take him before asking the price-how stupid of me.  She could see our faces and KNEW we loved that little dog.  So the question had to come up-how much is he?

She looked at me.  "I normally charge between $600 to $900 for my dogs."  However, when I read what you wrote and saw your mother I had decided if you loved my dog, I would give him to you-FREE.  "I can see that you do-so he's yours if you want him."

Laura and I were both too stunned to speak.  She had looked further into me from that post and read others.  She could tell we loved this precious little guy.  My mother will be getting Pierre on Sunday.  While Laura and I will be picking him up, Adam will keep my mother busy.

He will NOT by any means "replace" her other love.  We ALL have so much love in us I know there will soon be a very special place in my mother's heart for her new companion.

Oh, please meet Pierre.

Carole - this is a beautiful story.  Thank you for including us in your family.  I am so happy that your mother will have a companion and that Pierre will have a new Mommy to love him.  This is a match made in heaven.

Please try to get a photo of your mom with Pierre and share it, if you feel appropriate.  I know she is going to have many mixed emotions at first, but you can't help but love the little guy.

God bless you, my friend.  You are an angel.

Carole - this is wonderful! (and he's beautiful)

I would be lost without my dogs.  I often have to travel on business and can always talk with my wife and offsprung on the phone when I am away.  I can't tell you how many times, while away, that I have just walked up to someone walking their dog and just asked if I can take a moment to fell the fur in my fingers and get my "doggy dose" for the day.

I'm reminded of the old "Twilight Zone" episode where the old farmer won't enter into "Heaven" because they won't let dogs in, only to go further down the road and find out that the first gates he arrived at, didn't lead to Heaven at all, and, of course they let dogs into Heaven, because that's part of what makes it Heaven.

As a long-time dog owner who knows the joys and pains of getting, having and losing pets, your story was so heart-warming and re-affirming of the power of dogs to have a major influence on our lives.

A fellow dog owner who sends me dog stories and jokes most every day wrote with one that said:

Put your wife and dog in the trunk of your car for an hour, open it up, and see who is glad to see you?

<it's a joke and not an invitation to put your wife in the trunk, so amateurs, please don't try this at home>

Carole,

When we started ActiveRain it was out of a desire to see better communication in the real estate industry. Along the way a funny thing has happened; It's started to have an impact on people's lives. I don't think that any of us ever considered the ramifications of ActiveRain outside of real estate, on a personal level. It's not to say that we are cold and calculated, but there is so much to focus on when starting a business that aspect of what we were creating wasn't at the top of mind.

I can tell you this though.....for me, (BY FAR) the thing I am most proud of about ActiveRain is the way it has impacted some of our member's lives in a very personal manner. Stories like this always touch me. Thank you for sharing this and I know that little dog is going to get more love than it will ever need!!!

Oh Carole - Pierre is just darling!  I'm sure your mother will be very pleased to have a new friend to spend time with.  I'm glad Gayle stepped in to help, though not at all surprised.  That woman is a definite poodle advocate and friend to dog lovers.

I am sorry about the bad luck with the rescue organizations.  Many of them are just much too strict, in my opinion, and often driven by ego in the sense they think they know everything about their chosen breed.

This was a very kind and smart breeder to give Pierre to such a wonderful home, and to give him as a gift for free.

What a great end to your story!  Our very best dog was from an individual who maintained her "own" rescue efforts, on her farm.  She interviewed us. brought the dog 20 miles across town to see what his living conditions would be, made a dog tag for him and sent it to us, after the fact.  She told us if we EVER didn't want him, call her back...So happy your mom will be happy, and I KNOW Pierre will be happy too!

Carole,  Congratulations on the new addition to your family.   He does look adorable and I pray that he and your mom will be totally compatible.  Somehow, I feel sure that will be true.  This match was obviously meant to be.  I have two Jack Russell Terriers and they are absolutely members of the family.  We all love and cherish them and I know how hard it will be to lose them someday.

My husband and I always say, we're just not sure about people who don't love dogs.

I love this heart warming story! Thank you for posting this. With the economy struggling so much right now I am hearing all sorts of animals being abandoned and left to fend for themselves more than ever. It was so nice, as always, to hear one with a happy ending. It is so true that dogs choose us, and I couldn't be happier or more in love with my kids. My home is now affectionately referred to as "the ark" because I have rescued all sorts of critters and they all get along great. It is not uncommon, in my house, to have a cat in my lap, a bird on my shoulder and a dog on each side! Thank you to everyone involved with this matchmaking. You are all awesome!! -S

Mel, It was interesting that another breeder told me that as well...she said she Googles people for information; and if she can't find anything on them anywhere, she'll ask for information.  I've certainly changed my mind!

Judi, Sorry to make you late for work :)  An original sad story turned into something I still can't believe myself!  I am looking forward to Sunday :)

Teri, This pup is already loved--my mother is going to adore him.  We always joked that she treated her pers better then us (and she treated us REALLY well :)

Carol, I will try to get a photo.  You said it was a match made in heaven and I absolutely believe you're right.  I brought her last little one home to her and knew him as soon as I saw him.

Missy, Thank was exactly my point--that this community we have is not just business. There are such wonderful friendships that we wouldn't have had and people we may not have met.  It's what keeps me coming back.

Jo, He is truly such a great fit for my mother we couldn't believe it.  We had looked at so many and had to let it go, it was draining both of us....just another earth angel (or angels walking), don't you think?

Sharon, I will never again think ill of breeders.  I would still check them out but one that checks YOU out--Wow, they are not in it for the money!

Kathy, I'm still in a bit of shock and can't wait until Sunday!!  I will post back again when I get some shots, she's going to love him--and he's going to love her right back.

Kat, He is a sweetheart and watched his "mommy" the whole time.  He's definitely going to be back to visit her and I always want her to see what a wonderful home he's going to.

Rick, It sounds like a wonderful Twilight Zone episode that I missed.  I too miss my pets when I'm away and do the same thing you do--I talk to them over the phone!  Or if my children are away they get on with our pets.  It is unconditional love--both ways.

Chris, That's a good joke because it's probably true!  Even walking in the door after an hour or two and my dogs are thrilled to see me :)  I am a huge pet lover, they ARE members of the family.

Ben, Thank you, it certainly is a bright spot!

Sharon, This was nothing short of a miracle of sorts to me.  We had gone everywhere and had to finally let it go.  I do always believe there is a plan--although it may not be on our timetable.

Jean, I have met amazing people and made wonderful friends...it's a huge part of what Activerain does for me.  It doesn't always have to be business.

Kris, It was probably one of the most unexpected things that has ever happened.  I can't wait to see my mother's face on Sunday.

Bob, Thank you for stopping by.  One thing was clear to me shortly after coming on to Activerain.  We were allowed to post not only "business."  In that process of being allowed to share the ups and downs we have made some very real friendships and it extends to strangers we don't even know.

The vision of activerain may have been Real Estate and it certainly is that--we have ALL had tremendous success stories for work, but if it weren't for the personal aspects you and the others have always allowed us to share, I may not have met some of the BEST people--I have never found another place like it and doubt there will be.  Thank you and all the others who work so hard for all of us!

Chris, Gayle was absolutely wonderful, I can't tell you how much time she took and how hard she tried to help!  There are angels on this site for sure.  And things happen when they are supposed to.

Audrey, Sunday is going to be emotional for sure, I will try to get some shots.  I know you love your animals as well, they are true treasures.  Pierre is going to have a wonderful new home and my mom is going to be thrilled.

Cheryl, I am impressed with these people that screen the homes that their "babies" are going to.  I'm sorry that ALL breeders have a bad rap, it's not true.  And those that resue are truly special people.

Gary, Considering the way some of our animals have come to us, I have long believed they choose US.  It still amazes me and I don't know how they do it but I do believe they do.

Morgan, We are so excited and can hardly wait until Sunday....that's going to be one heck of a day around here :)

Eric, Thank you, we are just thrilled!  And can't wait to see my mother's face when she meets Pierre.

Marian, That's an interesting observation, I have never been without a dog--and we've had up to four at a time.  I believe some people just can't take them because they are not home enough.  And we have others who believe they are being kind by taking in too many dogs or cats until they can't keep up their homes anymore.  One home here was recently closed because she had over 180 cats!

Stephanie, My father had brought home a dog once that was roaming in the streets. It's hair was so matted it literally couldn't see.  And she bit him...and us for a very long time. My mother believed that any dog, given enough time would come around and she did and was such a love!

Hi Carole-  A truly amazing story and bless the breeder for opening her heart up to you and your mom!  The difference between a true animal lover is one who will give a pet away to a good home rather than charge because the know the pet will be loved and cared for much more so than by someone else.

Aloha Carol,

Thanks for the heart warming post. I hope your mother enjoys her new furry friend. I got suckered by a dishonest breeder and paid a small fortune for a 'Ciffon' (Chihuahua-Brussels Griffon) male pup with congenital reproduction issues (something a legitimate breeder whould be aware of). It really wouldn't have been a issue if I hadn't told her that I wanted to breed him. She then sold me an equally expensive female who turned out to be a 'Shih-ffon' (Shih-tzu-Brussels Griffon) regardless they are the sweetest pooches I could ever have hoped for and I would pay the money all over again in a second. The way I see it is I wasn't meant to breed dogs.

Peace,

Bill, What an unexpected delight for us.  I really felt this was my best AR success story.

Kim, I have heard so much about puppy mills and bad breeders--and come across one like this.  Just amazing I think.

Connie, I had also found my mother's previous pup and it IS very difficult to find just the one.  I still somehow think they choose YOU--this was love at first sight (and so was the other :)

Debe, Gayle helped me so much.  The people on this site are just unbelievable and that's what makes this different from any other place.  That pup IS a doll and I know my mother so well, she's going to cry and then not let him go :)

Cindy, Several big acts of kindness---and they will never be forgotten.  Thanks for stopping by.

Brenda, Thank you, we are thrilled.  Gayle has been wonderful and went so out of her way!

Kimo, I'm sorry that person misrepresented her dogs.  I was VERY fortunate, both my last breeder and this one were local....I was able to see the pups mom and dad too and that made me very comfortable.  I'm glad to hear how much you love those pooches anyway!

Annie, It's going to be quite a few tears on Sunday--from ALL of us :) I don't believe my mom will take that dog out of her arms once she holds him!

Teresa, I will...at some point fill you in.  I may stay there a day or two to help her with her new baby so I won't have my computer.  But I'll be back with pictures :)  I really can hardly wait...

Diane, I know my mother SO well.....I KNEW she would love the last one and I know she will absolutely adore Pierre.  It's going to be quite a moment!  There are wonderful, caring people on this site and it always amazes me.

Bill, It IS amazing!  I was just hoping the breeder would allow us to buy that pup....She saw my mom and knew she'd make a terrific mother!

Craig, They certainly do restore your faith in people.  The unbeiievable kindness of people sometimes overwhelms me.

Sheldon, SO much more then a blooging site is right! I have long believed that our pets DO somehow choose us, maybe because it's happened to me more then once.  People on her laugh together, cry together, are happy for each other and pray together.....Goodness, where else do you find that?

Susan, I wonder and think you're right.  I too love and miss Avanti but there is always room in your heart for more love.  That's also amazing.

Sherie, He sure is, a real little doll!

Erika, Thank you.  This one is precious and comes at a perfect time.

Vickie, I have tried to tell people how special it is over here, but you're right....they don't "get it."  Until they sit down and write and comment.  Then you can't pry them away from it :)

Sally, I DO just love this place!  I too get caught up for hours over here, reading, commenting and sharing and I still miss so much.  I am not going to have internet for a few days, I wonder if I'll be running home every day :)

Ann, Thank you, sometimes I think she wonders :)  Hopefully not after she sees I've done it AGAIN! (I brought her last pup).

Lola, It amazes me as well.  And will continue to whether it's business or personal things that happen, they are happening because of this wonderful place.

Gayle, Are you kidding??  Wow, that amazes me along with everything else.  I can't thank you ENOUGH EVER for all the help and kindness you showed--and your trust!  You are one terrific person with a heart of gold and the words "Thank you" don't even come close.  You're a true friend and I will never forget what you did for me--and my mother.

What a wonderful friend and companion for your mom!  Pierre is perfect!  Now I think she could get a lot of publicity by giving the Obama kids a poodle -- it is the perfect bread for Shasha and Maila

Carole, this is such a great and heartwarming story. This just goes to show you that there are still plenty of good, decent and kind-hearted people in the world. We never know just who may be reading our blogs. :)

Carole- I have been off AR for a while and just got back on. I am sorry to hear of your family's loss of Avanti. I feel that losing a pet is very similar to losing a child as they both rely on you for everything and have unconditional love for you (I have not lost a child but imagine it would be heart wrenching as well).

I am so glad to hear that you found Pierre and hope that he and your mom (and the rest of your family) will complete each other's lives and bring each other much happiness. I am amazed at the breeder and think she has a heart of gold and is in the right business for the right reasons (as opposed to those just in it for the money).

Pierre looks adorable! There is something about his eyes and the hair on top of his head that I love.

You should have put a "tissue alert" at the top of your post, because I surely need a couple right now!

Pierre, you have an awesome new family.  But I bet you know that already :-)

Hi Carole,

What a beautiful story! I'm sure they will take good care of each other. :)

Gosh...that story brought tears to my eyes...I have two standards...one since he was a puppy and one that a breeder abandoned...I got the second one through a client of mine.  That client listed their house with me...they had two standards as well...a week later, they decided to move into it instead and let their kids have the other house....but a week after that they called me about Caesar...did I want him....he is a great addition and I truly think that those clients came into my life to bring me my dog...these heart dogs do find you...one way or the other, they do...

Carole- You know I am absolutely thrilled for both you and your mom.  Once again, destiny or karma or whatever word we want to use, came at the right time.  It was meant to be.  And your tenacity my friend helped to bring this about......destiny is not something we just sit around and wait for :)

Now I want to go meet Gayle, anyone that does that much work for someone they don't know has to be pretty special.

Carole, I can tell Pierre will be a happy dog with you and your mom to look after him! He is adorable! I think it was fate that you found him.

Dena, What an exciting day tomorrow is going to be!  I can't really think about much else at the moment :)

Angela, I guess true love DOES conquer all...I am thrilled

Maureen, I watched all the coverage of that fllight and am always stunned by these miracles.  All the incredible people that run TO the scene, not AWAY from it to help!  Bless them all.  And the smaller miracles--like this wonderful breeder and Pierre.

Lori, They are a joy and my mother is going to be thrilled.  I can't wait until we hand him to her.  Good luck with your new baby :)

Joan, They are a wonderful breed....many of us would say that.  I didn't know if they had chosen a dog yet to be "The First Dog."  But am certainly looking forward to seeing the inauguration.

Deb, This is one of the most amazing things that has happened to me on AR.  In spite of all the other success, who would have thought?  Thank you for always being so supportive.

Amber, There really are wonderful people in this world.  Who don't  think about money first.  Suzee Orman always says "People First, THEN money" and I have always believed that myself.

Nestor and Katerina, Thank you--we are thrilled here and just can't wait for tomorrow!

Libby, I am thrilled to see you back and hope you are well and happy!  I'd have to agree, this person is doing what she does because she loves it and I too see so many things have turned into just "business."  What an incredible way to start the New Year.

Kris, That was such a cute comment...A tissue alert!  I hadn't thought of it but if anything this wonderful happens again I will put one up.  Pierre will officially be at his new home by about 12:00 tomorrow.

Jennifer, Thank you, it is so exciting.  Of course I went out and bought his food and new things for the new "baby."

Suzanne, They will.  He's going to be treated like a prince and I'm sure will be "home" right away.

Sonia, I know then do and you have just shared a wonderful story as well!  I have believed for a very long time that animals find you one way or another--goodness knows I've fallen for a few pets over the years and my mom has had some unexpected surprises.  This one will likely be the most special, though.  Thank you.

Rebecca, Krish said I should have put a "tissue alert" at the top of my post--there's a good thing to remember :)

Kathy, Gayle is pretty special--so are you and so many people in the rain.  Whatever this site was intended for it is the true friendships that have us---and many others coming back to it!

Robin, I believe in Fate and Karma.  And KNEW this was my mom's pup.  I didn't expect to get him the way I did!

Linda, I will...I may not get the pics downloaded right away and need to start working on my Chinese New Year Post--but I will do it soon.

Carole... this is a great story and I am sure your mom is very happy about it also.  I can remember when I was on for only about 3 months and I told this AR member that my mom's friend collected moo prints and such... Well, Angus, who is no longer on... and what a shame, sent me an umbrella with cows on it, to give to my mom's friend. There are so many helpful people on AR...  thanks for sharing this..

Jeff, Thank you, my mom is thrilled!  I spent a day over there with her and Pierre and he's such a bright spot for her.  And spoiled already.  I can't tell who is happier!

Kathleen, I had named him, the breeder had never named this little guy.  He learned his name in two days--so smart :)

Grace, My mom has picked up incredibly in just two days--I am thrilled for both of them and he's one great little boy.

Jo, He is doing SO well!  My mom adores him and he absolutely loves his new home.  I thank you very much for the great honor of your post and will do mine soon.  I had to get the post up for The Chinese New Year and it took me all day.  But thank you for your beautiful words and I won't forget to do it.

Michelle, I hadn't thought of that but it would be adorable!  He's wearing little puppy sweaters to go outside, I will have to look for a French man's touch--Thank you!

Cristal, You would love him more in person, what a sweetheart this one is!  I could not have asked for a sweeter little pup.

Russel, What a lovely comment!  Wow, I am touched, thank  you so much.  Pierre is just fine and settling in and his favorite room is the bedroom.  What a delight he is.  Thank you again for such kind words.

Hi Carole,

I just read your post It Seems Like Yesterday.. how heartbreaking! I can only imagine your mother's and your pain. My little Kiann is not doing well she will be 12 in March if she makes it that long, your post really hit home with me. I pray each night that when we go to sleep that if she must go please let it be in her sleep. On a brighter note I am so happy that you found Pierre he looks like a little sweety to help ease your pain. He is very lucky to be going to a good loving home, I know he will be very loved.

Carole, Carole, Carole!  You have my crying.  What a story and I'm so happy for your mother.  I lost my most treasured friend in the world last April (a cocker spaniel) and a month later got two puppies.  They have put me through every test imaginable and although they can never ever replace my Boopi, they certainly have made life enjoyable.  I got two of the when they were 8 weeks old!  Pierre looks like a beauty and I would say he is one fortunate pooch.

Kathy, It's so nice!  I get updates constantly on what he's up to and heard her laughing the other day.  Wow, I can't tell you how long that's been.

Thank you, Lubbock Homes, for your well wishes and comment!

Trace, It was heartbreaking and always is with our little friends.  They truly are our children and SO loved.  But there is always room for more love and oh is my mother smitten with this little one!

Donna, I remember your heartbreak and I remember Boopi.  It's an incredible loss but I'm so glad you have added these two little bundles of joy.  Two at 8 weeks old?  Wow, that's a hard job :)

Debbie, Thank you.  I have to get some good pictues, my mother was so emotional that day I am reluctant to show them.  Pierre is find and has begun stealing socks :)

You know, I am not a poodle person, but Pierre looks like a dear of a doggie if I ever saw one!  Snickey says "hello, and welcome to your new home, Pierre," and "congratulations, new family!"

Awwwwwwwwwwwww! This is such a sweet story. I'm so happy for you guys. What a cutie!! I've missed you, my friend, as I've been away for the past three weeks. It is good to be back among friends...and you've given me much about which to smile. ~GBU~

What a precious story!!! We lost our Daisy after 12 sweet years, and we now have our Sophie who brightens our day! I loved what you said about how the new dog does not replace the love you have/had for the old dog. We DO have enough love to share with our new baby! :) Pierre is adorable!! Congratulations to your mother on her "new addition". Perhaps a "dog shower" is in order with presents for the new baby? (My neighbor actually did this for a friend who got a new Westie!!)

Elizabeth, You were MISSED!  I was SO happy to see you back and thank you for the wonderful Week in Review.

Sonia, I am sorry about Daisy....believe me.  I do know Pierre will never replace her little Avanti but this guy is precious and she's in love.....again!  Congratulations on Sophie!
