I love to drive, I really really do.... So much so that I once drove by myself from Palm Coast, Florida to San Fran, and enjoyed every minute of it (well, I could have done without the hitch-hiker...)

Now, I am spending so much time behind my keyboard that I hardly ever leave the house, save for an occasional trip to see a client or to the store.  So when I was asked a few days ago to run an errand for a friend which involved taking off for an hour without feeling guilty about it, I was all for it.  It was a rather silly little favor that took me from 12 miles inland across the bridge to A1A.  For those of you who don't know, A1A is our scenic highway along the Atlantic coast, and is absolutely beautiful.  During tourist season, it's bustling with traffic of all kinds, from bikini-clad sun revelers to bikers in their leather gear, and everything in between...  Bob Marley blasting from car stereos, cause there is nothing better than the beach and Bob Marley; margaritas dripping condensation onto napkins with love notes scribbled on them at the beachside cafes, and the many fisherman casting for fish amidst a sea of pelicans and seagulls...

The last time I was at the beach was indeed during the summer, or so I realized upon crossing the bridge to an eerily quiet beach-side town.  No cars high- jacking the view of the ocean, no bikini-clad youths, and no Bob Marley.  I slowed down to a comfortable 30, just because I wanted to take it all in, slowly.  I needed so desperately to inhale enough oysters and seaweed to last me until it warms up enough to take the pups to the pink coquina sands...  I needed to have enough time to have the calm winter blue of the Atlantic remind me why I am here, and how glorious, indeed, this place is.  No matter what happens, this vast body of water will always beckon me.  I am, alas, a child of the sea, even in times when I don't need a compass to keep from getting lost...

sunrise, winter, Atlantic

So, wherever in the Universe you happen to be, take a drive to a spot that beckons you... To a place where it's ok to laugh, cry, and be utterly alone and filled with magic... You know where it is - go find it.

Mine is a skip and a hop away, and for that, I am eternally greatful...

My dear Inna, here I sit…huddled in my gas-heated home on the coldest night of the year…and yet…somehow your words have transported me back to a summer evening, back to the open road rushing beneath the wheels of my rag top, warm air toying with my hair….the strains of Little River Band reminding me that “If there's one thing in my life that's missing, It's the time that I spend alone…"
ah….Inna how I envy you for having found your place!

We are all born of water and that liquor comprises the better part of our beings…the draw truly is universal, isn’t it?

Your warm images inspire me to think…. perhaps it truly is time for a cool change?

Robin - Nice!

Inna, Driving by the ocean this week has been a sheer pleasure. It is definitely something to be thought about, and not taken for granted. I find my place in the mountains, where I am much at home and at peace. Both make me feel as small as I want to and as grand a creation as can be. Both valuabe feelings to both keep one grounded and to let one soar.

I drive A1A to work every morning. 9.5 miles every morning, and then 9.5 miles in the evening.

That's why I live here, right across from the ocean, and the first thing in the morning I see the ocean between the two condo buildings. A little bit of view, but so wonderful

My dear Robin... Few can put it all into as few words as that... I am glad I have my place, or a small part of it. I demand mountain ranges, but can't quite have them here in the flatlands.  The water with suffice for now, and mountains will be visited soon.  I am mostly the sea, anyway, and shards of shells. Everything else just mists my imagination occasionally. Stay warm, Robin, you are in a great place:-) Hugs-

My Elaine - your mountains are the most beautiful I've seen, and you meld into the misty blues and greens so well... Someday, we'll hike to the top of the tallest of Topanga's peaks and learn to fly all over again. MWA-

Jon - in a strange way I am glad I don't drive it every day... It's always like Christmas for me when I cross the bridge; always a miracle of sorts...as if I am seeing it for the first time:-)  Thanks for stopping by:-)

My Inna - I love the sea. It is in my blood. Recently an Aunt I didn't know I had found me. One of the first things she asked me was what was my favorite place to be. I said the ocean. She replied of course it is, for it is in your blood, for you are a child of the sea. She went on to explain for generations our family has been bound to the ocean, and for me to be truly happy I must always live near it. Nothing makes me happier than the smell of salt water and the spray of sea mist on my face.

Inna---what a beautiful post & so poetically written!

My magical place, as you have described, is here along the beaches of the west coast.  If I may borrow your words...I too, am a child of the sea.  It is where I am the happiest and prefer to spend most of my time.

My family enjoys day & weekend trips, and we occasionally make our way over to the east coast of Florida.  I love the beaches over there, and find them different then ours.  Our most recent visit was over the summer, but we manage to find more secluded spots along A1A away from the crowds.

The photo here shows one of our family members ejoying her magical moment on the Atlantic Coast.

Suzanne - thank you so much for the sweet words, and the priceless photo of your adorable family member. Nothing makes me happier than watching my dogs chase sandpipers on an empty beach... We have plenty of private spots here in Flagler, where even in the midst of a heavy tourist season there's hardly a soul to be seen.  The red sand here sticks to you like the best of velcro.  Most find it anoying - I soak it in:-) Thanks for the sweet and poetic comment!

Inna - I love the power and life of the ocean. I love it during storms. I love it during the blood moon. I do fine peace and wonder there. I am always amazed when I realize, you only see the surface. I also know that it brings home the truism, I am just a wave...I am not the water.

So, my peace is found in an 8 by 8 room. My peace is cluttered and filled with paper, canvass, brushes and pigment. My peace has but one door and it remains closed to the danger out there. My peace dances to the sound of music I choose. My peace may become smoke filled. My peace is in the solitude an 8 by 8 room can bring. No expectations. No demands. No success. No failure. No judge. No jury. No yardstick.

There is no time there. No sunrise. No sunset. No clear sky. No hanging clouds. No wind. No rain. None of that, unless............I deem it to be there through pigment or pen. My 8 by 8 room. My world. Empty as a black hole and filled to the brim with dreams.

Find your beach. Find your sand. Find your Ocean.

It is yours.

As for me. I need only turn out the light, close my eyes, and I am home.
