Attention Wellington Florida Residents:

The Village of Wellington owns K-Park which is worth about $30 million dollars and consists of 68 acres of land at the corner of Pierson Road and US Highway 441 ( State Rd 7).

There are 3 members of the Wellington Village Council that want to give this asset away! You need to pay attention to this. You have a voice and you need to show up to voice your stand on giving away property that actually belongs to the residents of Wellington.

These 3 members want to give this property to Palm Beach Community College for a 5th campus. PBCC is seeking a donation to build on this land. They have not shown us the residents how they can build this campus. The voters turned down state funding for schools so that is not going to happen. In this economy this is not a chance we should take.

The main reason why is because K-Park is not paid for yet. The Village of Wellington is paying for the land with a bond that is set to be liquidated in 2013. We, the residents of Wellington will be paying $40,000 per month and only getting 83 cents a month back in return from PBCC's lease of $10 per year!

  • PBCC is not paying for this land, they are not buying this land which happens to be the most valuable piece of land that Wellington owns right now.
  •  PBCC also will not be paying any impact fees for the next 25 years!!!!
  • PBCC will NOT be paying any property taxes on this land.
  • PBCC will be causing fire and police man hours for which they will not have paid a penny for.

So we the residents will be footing the bill for this project. Wellington is getting less tax money now because of the economy. There are foreclosures to deal with and businesses closing. The K-Park could and should become an income generator for our people here in Wellington instead of a burden.

Parents should be alarmed because this area was supposed to be slated for more ball fields since the ones we have now are overused and too crowded.

The members of the Village council who are all for the community college to be here don't tell you how it is going to be paid for but they will say that this will benefit young people. The problem is this is simply not the case. Youth from Wellington go to FAU, PBAU, Miami, Florida State and out of state Universities. A very small percentage of Wellington's young people even go to PBCC whose main campus is only 20 minutes away!

Katerina.  You need to send this to your local newspaper and TV editors.

Of course, if one were to "follow the money", they'd no doubt find that there is some payoff to someone, sometime, somewhere.

Thats a great title, after following your blogs I'm very SEO conscious and that title seemed to me to be very directed towards your area and very attention grabbing.  The perfect combination.

Morgan- All my localism posts are tagged with title that are SEO rich, I use the keywords with intention! I only wish I could make them a little longer. This one would have been better if I specified the issue in the title but could not find the right keywords to make them count. Thanks for the kudos.

Lenn- Always follow the money! You are a genius! :) But sometimes I wonder if it is just stupidity. Nestor says they may not be smart enough to pull one of these on us:)  I wonder why the rest of the folks don't figure this one out:) We had the opportunity for the village to turn this into an income producing property. But they are so stupid- there is a dental school that was going to want to lease the land, pay the impact fees and bring in tax dollars. There was our county sports commission who wanted us to give the land to them but in return they would give like near all the proceeds from the complex back to Wellington, plus we would have those people spending money in our town after the events. The council members starting screaming they would never give the land to the sports commission yet they will give it to a college that is for lower income levels and they do not have the spending power. Our area is high income and that is why the kids here go to Ivy league schools and good state universities.

We have this problem around here. I know the scenario all too well.  By the time the towns people are "aware" of it, its a done deal.  Do you have a DEIS yet?  Sometimes if you can get a hold of that you can discuss traffic congestion concerns etc.  The other issue would perhaps be housing.  I don't know the nature of the student body, but often student housing can put strain on existing infrastructure (thing sewage, water, electrical grid.) Also, around here wetlands and drainage is a HUGE issue - are there any water runoff concerns.  Making some noise might help considerably.

Like I said, been there all too often. Our area is very dense - so you can imagine the pressure to build 30 minutes outside of Manhattan.
