It appears that Google is feeling the pinch of the recession.  Or preparing themselves for the long haul.  They will be closing three engineering offices, and cutting 100 recruiters.  Their global work force has over 20,000 people.  They will soon stop accepting new users for Google Notebook, and Google Catalog search.  Google video will no longer accept user uploads.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with  many people cutting back on Google Adwords, which got to be too expensive - and in my case, unnecessary since my organic SEO is awesome.

GOogle may change its search engine algorithms to force people to buy adwords again.  LOL.  Personally I think Google offered a LOT of stuff for free that maybe should have been on a subscription basis.  I'd gladly pay a nominal fee for Picasa and Google Docs.

Boy that's a "sign of the times." I'd say that people need to work hard and spend warily.

I dont say they are feeling the pinch rather a preemptive strike to stay on top financially and fiscially. But I am excited for googles changes to page ranks :)

I have to wonder if this is the beginning of the end for google?

Not the end of Google by far, but they simply got ahead of themselves.  Think about it, a company that went from nothing to 20000 employees in 10 years.  That is a phenomenal rate of growth.  Now, it is probably just a time to reap some of the rewards of the hard work, and maybe not be so concerned about growth.

Sooner or later even Google was going to feel the pinch.  They are a solid company but they're not immune to the woes of the economy.

I wonder what the forecast is for google's profitablity for 2009. Now is the time to cut costs in order to maintain your position in the marketplace.

Kristal - I didn't think that Google would have any cutbacks. they seem to be doing good in these hard times.
