This morning, I went outside to run some errands, and it was cold!  Really cold for these parts - like 17 degrees.  And I was cold!  Brrrrr!

Yeah, yeah!  You guys in Wisconsin and Michigan and Minnesota are thinking, "Geeze!  What a wimp!"  And I wondered what it would feel like to be  someplace where your nose and ears are ready to drop off after a minute's exposure to minus 30!

But what really gave me pause today was thinking that this Tuesday, I have volunteered to hang out along the Inaugural Parade route doing "recycling" which I think has something to do with making sure that empty water bottles go into the right trash containers.  And I started to think that a trip to LL Beans for some thermal undies, serious gloves, and wool socks was in order.

My neighbor and I headed out together.  And I now have long John's, wool socks, hi tech gloves, and a new down coat that was on sale.  And the coat will look really cute with the bright red Inaugrual Volunteer hat that we're all getting to help identify us in the crowd.

I'm ready for almost whatever Mother Nature sends our way!

Oh!  And I found a fanny pack that is just the right size for lip balm, money, ID and my camera!  I hope I'll be recycling in a location where I'll be able to actually see the parade.

Ellie, I am doing layers.  It's supposed to get up to a high of about 32 on Tuesday, so I probably won't be stripping down!

Gary, I just hope that I get close enough!  The last time I went to an inaugural parade, you couldn't see a thing.

Barbara, It's sort of a little purse on a belt!  Leaves ones hands free for Recycling!

And Marchel, I've heard that Houston has two seasons - summer and August!

With the cold weather I'm wondering if the city will only be able to hold half the people expected. Everyone will be layered up to keep warm and with all the bulk there won't be enough room for everyone :-)  Can't imagine trying to use the portapotty in 10 layers of close.  Yikes.

Patricia - well good luck. It seems like this may be one of the coldest Innaugurations, although mybrain may be fuzzy. We expect to se pics, even if it is only the activity goping on around you. We have a neighborhood dress-up Innauguration party to attend, so we will be there with you in spirit(s).

It was 9 degrees here at one point this morning.  Ouch!

Did I see you in one of Brad's photo galleries ofd NYC?

Wish you a lot of sunshine. It will make it much more comfortable. Taking a camera with you is a sign of confidence. I lived in the Arctic, loved taking pictures, and I do not have winter pictures there, maybe just a few. But if you brave taking some, I would love to see them.

Pat, buy yourself a one size larger pair of slacks also.  You'll be much more comfy when you have your thermal undies on.  (I have 2 that I own for just this reason!)  Edit:  Also wear tights as the first layer under your thermal undies and slacks.  They help!

And no, I don't think you're wimpy.  When the temperature drops below a persons normal range of comfort level it's just plain ol cold!!!  Whether that be 15 degrees or 15 degrees below zero (as it was here yesterday) it's alllllll cold.

Have a grand time!

17?  Heck, we hit 47 again today.  Half our snow cover is gone.  It sounds like you're ready to brave the cold though.  I hope you get a great spot for watching the parade!

More power to you!  It was 3 degrees when I went to the end of my driveway to pick up the Washington Post this monring.  I'm in the house with warm sweats and a comfroter to wrap around if I'm stationary for too long.

I hope it warms up a bit for Tuesday.  Maybe relative to these past couple of days it'll be like Miami!

Pat:  I thought about you yesterday and your recycling duty at the parade.  I was with a client who works downtown.  He was saying they were asking anyone coming down to bring their own toilet paper.  And then he gave the number of portapotties to the number of expected attendees.  You might want to bring a gas mask.

I heard the ratio of people to potties is 6000 to one.  Don't drink too much liquid before you go!  I look forward to hearing all about your experience.  Have fun!
