Hey, That's Mr. George To You; Humility in Banking and Finance

By
Mortgage and Lending with Arizona Wholesale Mortgage Inc.

arizona mercedesI was just driving a few moments ago, on the way to my office to work on a Saturday.

(I am always proud to service my Arizona loan clients on the weekend, because I know so much of my competition does not.)

Anyway, I got behind a guy driving a very high-end black Mercedes. Very nice car...

I don't remember what model it was-- for those of you that would know your Mercedes models if I told you.

Probably because I was immediately distracted by his license plate.

It said something very close to:  ITSMRTOU  (I don't want to put his actual Arizona license plate number online, so I changed it for the sake of his own well-deserved embarassment.)

He wanted his message to be read as "It's Mister To You" and I could not see any other possible configuration.

So, naturally, due to the $80,000 car, my first reaction was to dismiss this guy to be an arrogant jerk-- somebody who wanted everyone that drove behind him to know that he is to be addressed "Mister So-and-So" or maybe even "Mister Mercedes."

It makes me wonder if he is defective in other areas; so much so that he needs an automobile to command respect from strangers.

I also realized the possibility that this could be a joke and he could be a super-nice guy with a wacky sense of humor. So I finally settled on that.

He must just be a laugh riot; the class clown and that's it.

As I passed him I noticed he had a sign on his door.  He was a Realtor and he was advertising his name, number and website.

Now that changed everything!

I went from a knee-jerk reaction when I first saw him, to deciding that it was all just a silly joke...and now I settle on a new feeling: This guy does not realize that his license plate is going to be offensive to some people, especially clients who may never be able to afford a Mercedes, and who also believe they shouldn't call their Realtor "Mister."

My personal feeling is that the Realtor is working for me; and I refuse to prostrate myself to someone who works for me. You want me to call you mister? Well, since I was raised well, I call everybody "mister" anyway.

But the same people who raised me well also taught me that people deserve respect and deserve to be called mister. I do not recall Mom and Dad telling me that paying $29 for an Arizona license plate somehow earned you respect.

You may say, "Aw heck, he's obviously doing well for himself.  So who cares?"

Because I personally believe that every client counts and deserves respect. Except those who treat me rudely... Okay, most clients deserve respect anyway.

I just think a little humility goes a long way.  Maybe you agree with me; maybe you agree with Mr. Mercedes, Realtor Extraordinaire and all-around Expensive Car Guy.

Welcome back Michael!

Interesting twist... humility does count, however, sometimes our profession isn't given the total respect we deserve. I have heard members of the public talk to one of my peers as if they couldn't do anything else with their life - as if being a Realtor was EASY and for the stupid.

That would be a turnoff to me. I agree with you about humility. But the way that man is presenting himself is the type of client he's going to draw to himself. I guess that's OK with him, but that's not the kind of client I'd want to work with.

Michael, it is wonderful to hear from you...I hope you know many of us think of you often and wonder how you are doing.

As for Mister Mercedes...well, everyone has their niche and maybe this guy wants to work with classless, nouveau riche jerks...at the same time, yeah, while it *could* be his sense of humor, what a turn off to potential clients who have no clue as to his level of humor.

This goes back to the argument about whether or not to decal your car up. What if you are the first car in a chain reaction? You'll be the one on the TV news and the front page of the news paper. Is all publicity good?

Hi Michael, So good to see you here. We,ve been keeping you in our prayers.

I agree with you. This person is a little too high fallutin' and too high on the hog for my taste. I like down to earth Realtors. and clients!

Michael,

Glad to hear you are back on the Rain and working even on a Saturday.  I think the license plate is hilarious, just not on my car.  I'm more concerned about having a good realtorlationship with my customers and I'll let them decide if I earned the title of Mister.

ps... in my book, you earned the title Mister for the way you took great care of your bride when she needed it the most

As many others said, I saw Karen's picture and had to click on your post. So glad you're back!!

I have to admit, I enjoy reading vanity plates and trying to figure out exactly what the motivation of the driver is. Mine is easy "SLD BY SU". Positive thinking!!  : )

Hi Michael,

I was so pleased to see a post from you. Thanks for coming back to the Rain.

When I was owned and operated a service company before retiring and joning the forces of Real Estate a potential client's statement was a lasting lesson for me. I reviewed their needs and developed an estimate for the required services. We chatted a while and as I was leaving Mr. client said, "Had you pulled up in a Cadillac I wouldn't have given you the time of day! I didn't and don't drive a flashy vehicle. Thanks to him, I never will.

One can be successful and make an appearance statement without flaunting it materialistically.

Hope to see more of you.

Hi Michael,

I personally would not have put anything even close to this on my plate.  I think there must be a meaning other than what he is portraying, has to be.  Being humble means something to me in my book, but it does not allow others to run over me either.

You have certainly demonstrated much humility, love and courage for Karen.  My hat is off to you, and I wish you all the success God will bring you.  Welcome back.

That's why I always drive my "well-used" old mini-van and keep the merc in the garage.  At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :-)

Michael - It's good to see you blogging again, welcome back.

My first year in real estate, I was with a buyer and as we were leaving one of the homes we were viewing, the listing agent drove up in a new jaguar. This was  $150,000 listing. The buyer with me said that he would never hire a realtor driving and $80,000 car. He would always feel that he was paying too much.

It stuck with me. I drive a nice car, but never an obviously expensive one.

Arrogant?  In these times it is tacky to show off - so many people are hurting.

But maybe it is some kind of inside joke?

Hi Michael!  Praying for Gods Peace and continuing Healing.

I agree, most people are going to have the first reaction and most won't be giving the person the benefit of a doubt.  I think most people want to do business with down to earth people who are successful, not the arrogant who flaunt their supposed success.

Hello Michael, happy to see you posting!  I completely agree with your post, not a good idea if you are a real estate agent,  Actually, I don't think it's too smart to put that on your license plate whoever you may be....that little Mercedes of his just might get keyed by someone who doesn't agree with him.

Hi Michael:  So glad you are posting for Karen.  She is still missed.  As for me, even the clients with bad credit count but the ones who are rude and inconsiderate never get far enough to be a client with me.  I am with you, I will give the Realtor the benefit of the doubt that he doesn't realize how that license plate may actually come across.
