I NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE! Laminate Wood Flooring in Basements!

By

My wife and I have been going back and forth about whether or not to finish the entire basement flooring in a laminate wood like pergo or dupont flooring, but she wants to have it carpeted for our younger daughter.  I told her that I think that the "wood" look is better for resale and I think just plain looks better and we can always get area rugs.  Her response to me was, SHOW ME SOME BASEMENTS THAT ARE FINISHED WITH ALL WOOD FLOORING AND SHE WOULD LET ME DO IT!

SO, FELLOW ACTIVE RAINERS, I NEED YOUR HELP!  PLEASE POST ANY PICTURES OF BASEMENTS YOU MAY HAVE THAT HAVE IN EITHER YOUR HOME OR ANY OF YOUR LISTINGS THAT HAS A WOOD LAMINATE TYPE FLOOR (PREFERABLY IN THE BASEMENT AREA) SO I CAN SHOW THEM TO HER!

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE...

I just finished my $25k theatre room in my basement with wood floor (fully THX certified sound quality).  The rest of my basement is being finished with a very similar product.

I have been buying and installing all varieties of laminate, hardwood, engineered wood, and floating wood floors for the past decade.  Every house we flip, renovate, or buy get wood floors as I have a supplier who gets me the wood products for a ridiculously low price.

I believe my very first blog post here was about wood floor options, lol.  As far as I am concerned, a wood floating floor in a basement is 10x warmer and classier than any other option.

Thank you so much for your comments and please feel free to send me a few pictures that you may have of finished basements with the wood flooring products.  I feel the same way you do about the warmth and the classiness factor.  I just emailed you my information, THANKS!!!

Relax, that's what the mountains are for

I don't have a picture but we have had Alloc laminate floors in our home office and guest bedroom for 3 years and we love it. There is a concrete slab under it and it is in the lower level of the home. What we like about it is that it is very durable. With dogs and kids it holds up. water doe not penetrate it. Very easy to clean a damp cloth mop with some Windex and it's done. we love it so much when we remodeled last year we did the whole living room too. Just be sue to get quality. Alloc  has a metal locking track system that fits together well and allows the product to be taken up and reused somewhere else. When the kids get older we plan on doing the living room in real wood and using the laminate in bedrooms we plan to build in a few years.

My mother in law had bought an inferior product for her home. It chipped during installation. The installer wouldn't replace it and the company would not guarantee it. She got stuck with it and had it replaced it with a quality product in less than a year. Don't skimp on price and you'll enjoy the product for years to come.

Okay Michael Here is a picture we took Christmas of 2007 in our great room. The flooring you see is the alloc laminate floor. You also see we have two active boys, 3 cats, and 3 big dogs. (We now have 4 dogs) and the floors look as good as they did the day we installed them. Hope this helps.

Oh one more thing. You have a girl. Bet she loves nail polish. You know what that does to a rug? Food for thought.

Thanks for your help Gary and I hear you on the nail polish.  She is not quite old enough yet, but she will be eventually...

Well my boy was four and found his mom's nail polish spilt it on our new bedside table. It didn't make it to the carpet but ruined the table.

What you're planning on doing in the basement carries alot of weight as to what type of flooring you probably should be using.  Also to consider, how likely is it that the basement can/will get wet, either from leakage or water pipes?  Laminate floors can handle a little water, but not much.

Depending on the use of the area, another option that I believe that you can get from Home Depot is a rubberized "laminate" type flooring.  It looks like laminate once laid, but it is basically a rubber floor.  It's durable and water proof.

I should not have a problem with water in the basement, but that is why I have home owners insurance...
