Every morning, lately, I start the day at my computer.  Reading my email, flipping back and forth from Facebook and Active Rain, chuckling at the comments and writings of my friends here on-line.  It hit me this morning that real estate agents really are a very funny group as a whole.  Is that true, or is it just that I attract funny people into my life?

  laugh

My real life friends aren't all Realtors, but with the possible exception of my long time friend Robyn, the funniest friends I have are Realtors.  My best friends in the entire world, Leann, Liz and Jackie can make me laugh so hard that my sides ache and it's not unusual to see us bent over in the computer room with our legs crossed, laughing like we are at a comedy club.  And it doesn't take much.  A single word, a glace and we are off to the races!

Active Rain has been a major source of amusement for me.  I'm thinking that Realtors are so funny because we are so diverse.  It's an industry where almost everyone had a former life and profession.  Maybe not in medicine, but there are writers, engineers, teachers, secretaries, office managers, bankers, bartenders, nurses, just to name a few.  In my opinion, it's the former bartenders that seem to be the most successful as Realtors and the funniest as people. Is it the bringing together of all of those past experiences that makes us click so well and laugh so well together?

Just throwing it out there.  Are we the funniest people on earth, or do I just have a very exposed funny bone?

Not sure we are the funniest group of people out there but definitely the strangest and have the most unusual stories to tell because of our profession.

Successful Realtors are very people oriented and usually are fun to be around.  I too enjoy some of the great AR humor.  Sounds like you have a nice circle of friends that know how to put a smile on your face and a laugh.

We deal with folks with real live situations everyday. Many are very serious and most are very expensive. So humor is a great ice breaker.

Good post

There is a lot of variety in real estate and you need to have a sense of humor.

Susan, I definitely laugh more with this job and my fellow realtors than any other job I've had (managing a women's clothing store and working in a nursing home.) It does s=em there is always something to laugh about.

Personally I believe that if you cannot laugh at yourself and the things that happen that we cannot control, then you would be awfully uptight most of the time. I wouldn't still be in this business if I didn't have fun everyday and enjoy myself.......

Hi Susan. I think you may be on to something with Realtors being some of the most funny people. It is a very SOCIAL endeavor putting together buyers and sellers or properties and investors. If you DIDN'T have a sense of humor to some extent I don't think you could survive very long with the ups and downs. To me it is a great icebreaker among people, between Realtors, and a stress reliever when all hell breaks loose in a deal. And yes Susan, you do attract the funniest into your life naturally. Like attracts like you know, so YOU get the cream of the crop.

It is that diversity of backgrounds and our overt nature. It is also I think very disarming to introduce humor to a tense situation.

In general most agents could be categorized as either humorous or lovers of humor.

Susan, most of the agents I know in my area just aren't that funny.  But here on AR....wow - there are some very smart and witty and hysterically funny people that I have welcomed into my world and I'm glad that you are one of them :)

Maybe it's a self defense mechanism. If you can't laugh at yourself and some of the situations you encounter, you'll be miserable in this business!

Hi Susan-Speaking strictly as someone who is not a realtor but is around a number of them in my profession I believe that those who have the best sense of humor are the ones that do the best in real estate but also in life. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest and with out a good sense of humor life most definitely be a lot more stressful and not a fun place. I also think our personality and our desire to have fun, laugh, love attracts like minded people to us. In reading and enjoying your blogs I think you are one of those people who loves to laugh and enjoys life to the fullest regardless of what life throws at you and that makes you special. Have a great Sunday and week. Chat again

Remember the end of the first "Dirty Harry" movie, when the bad guy laughs insanely as he reached for the gun before Harry blows him away?

That's the same reason Realtors laugh so much! ;)

Heather, strange and funny can sometimes be the same thing!

Kathy, I'd like to think that like attracts like, not sure how I feel when I attract creepy buyers!

Connie, I have said it a million times and I'll say it again.  I have been very blessed in my life with wonderful friends.

Tony, you are right.  Life and our business is a very serious thing, it really helps to laugh.

Chuck, you need a sense of humor is all areas of your life!

Barb, there is more to cry about too in Real Estate, but the laughter always wins out, thank God!

Julie, you said it!  I work from home and go in every day to the office for an hour or so, just to laugh with the gang and catch up.

Gary, I try to handle every situation I get into in life with humor.  After that, I call my Uncle Guido.  That usually sets things straight again when humor doesn't work!

Mara, I feel the same way about you!

Mike, some of us are funny ha ha, some are funny, peculiar.  Some of us are both!  I'm glad you are part of my group too!

Leesa, there are a few exceptions, but I prefer not to let one or two rats spoil the sewer!

Hi Sandra.... I'm going with the drugs too!

Susan:  Real estate offices are among the funniest places on earth.  I think we see it all.  And you're right, we are a diverse group.  And we do come medical careers too.  A co-worker, and very good friend of mine, had a Masters in Nursing and worked as a mid-wife prior to real estate.

I think you are a very funny person so you likely do attract other funny people. When you have a good sense of humor, then normally you like to be around others who also share that affliction. As far as Realtors go, I think you hit the nail on the head. We are a widely diverse group with a lot of life experience to share and I think that adds to our ability to share and take a joke.

Susan, you may see humor in a lot of things others don't or make it a point to surround yourself with people who make you laugh. I personally don't find agents that I know funny; upbeat, amusing, and sometimes just plain odd perhaps, but not overly funny. A lot of agents in our market are certainly nice and pleasant to work with, but I'd say they are mainly a little uptight as a whole. I personally like to make everything fun but it sounds like PA is funnier than Cleveland.

Susan - All wrong, my friend.  Mortgage folks are the funniest people on God's Green Earth.  We dip the financing yo-yo before your eyes and snap it up before it can ever be held dear and true.  Come to think of it, that's not really funny.  What's funny is imagining your subscriber list on AR naked in awkward positions as you try to give a speech in front of your local church.  That kind of gives "pew" a different sort of reality.

Say a prayer for me, I'm off to watch the Steelers.  And I think you have a wonderful sense of humor... despite being a Realtor;)

Susan.. I think realtors on a whole *HAVE TO* have a sense of humor, which in turn makes us funny people.  With all the different senarios, and people we meet, we have to have a sense of humor, or we would be all locked up in a funny farm.  How is that for humor?

Well, you do have an exposed funny bone... but we, as a group, are pretty comical.  We encounter so many nutty things on a daily basis we can't help but be funny.  Who but a Cabernet loving eyetalian from Philly could lose her slingback in my chandelier.  I mean, come on! :)

And speaking of which, I just poured a glass and the bottle is now empty.  Last darn bottle too!  And Desperate Housewives is coming on!  And considering that the shoe in question started out being on my foot at Andrew's place in Tom's River is one of life's big mysteries!  I think that Mei Ling had something to do with it!  Jesse, I love you!

Susan, one has to have a sense of humor as a real estate professional, if she/he wants to stay sane.  Life is so much better when you can see the absurd and funny happenings around us!  It keeps my cheerful attitude going, while my clients are enjoying the time together, too.  Actually, I do not think my office mates are funny at all, though they did come from a wide variety of occupations.  Just do not tell them.

It is a good life, as Buffini says.

Susan, we HAVE to be the funniest people in the world.  Who else would be nuts enough to do the crazy things we do.  I have worked in lots of other careers....as my broker says, there is no one he knows who's had as many diverse jobs as I have had.  And, I've only been fired once and was grateful for that!  But, this is my favorite career, and the nut jobs I've come across and the weird situations keep me coming back day after day.  So I can identify with the crossing your legs and going off on a laughing jag.  Just keep the laughter coming.........

Susan - I agree. I have never had so many laughs in any other line of work. Maybe it's because we are independent contractors who are not so attached to office rules and policy. We can be ourselves and have fun without being what an employer wants us to be - wound up so tight that it's frightenng!
